I've never fished it but my friends and I are planning a trip for August 1st.  Any tips or recommendations?

What types of fish can I expect there?

Went up about a month ago, water was 63* then but regardless of that I did catch a few bass, nothing too big(biggest was lost at the boat about 15"), and also a pike that went about 25". All fish were caught on jigs or other artificials. Also the lake has weeds like I've never seen before, so be prepared to use weedless presentations.

CL was known at one time for musky but numbers are down, most of the guys that fish it are targeting northern Pike, bass and pan fish. I would suggest fishing early in the morning do to the boat and jet ski traffic. The lake can get crowded very quickly on weekends.

what are you fishing for?  If your going on a weekend, good luck and hope it rains,  the boating traffic gets bad and it seems like they enjoy buzzing around you when your fishing.  i don't fish Conneaut unless its raining or after Labor Day.  you probably would want to hit the weed edges because that's been the most productive pattern I've found. You can catch just about every type of fish in the lake.

My buddy mentioned fishing for perch, crappie, and bass.  Hopefully I can land some bass or pike.

Very true about boat traffic be on water at first light get off by 10am
on weekends. Weed edges for crappie 8-10ft w/jigs & curly tails or sm. minnows
Throw spinnerbaits for bass  and you'll get some pike also. Experiment w/colors don't waste your time on perch.

Are you fishing from shore or Boat?

Shore:

Spinner baits, Jighead and twister tails combos (white usually works well), Minnows, Emerald shiners Nightcrawlers. Can catch basically anything from shore,




Depending on type of fishing.

Trolling:

Good luck with the traffic. I've only trolled once and we did it with Daredevels, Gold Spoons, and Perch J-13 patterns.

Casting from a boat:

Spinners, crankbaits, Topwater at night is fun. Jighead and twister tail combos again. Basically anything from the shore will work in a boat as well.


Don't be too surprised if ya pull somthing big, that's definentaly one of my favorite lakes for causal fishing. And there's a lotta weeds too.
