any of you  guys use any type of plugs behind planners boards instead of using harness or spoons

Storm Warning 2 -> RE: lures (6/29/2008 9:55:14 AM)

Bangos seem to be hot.  Pretty much any deep diver that will get you 18 to 25 feet down will get 'em.  Sounds odd doesn't it?  Go deep, fish shallow.  Just keep moving until you find them.

should i add any weight to the lure or just keep them to dive at the dept there made for

Reef Runners and Husky Jerks have both done well for me 90 - 200 feet back on 20# Fireline.w_w.

Bangos 150 to 200 back have been very popular on mono and I would imagine 90 to 150 back on braid would be good.

are u guys adding any weight to your lines when using the stickbaits like any in line sinkers

If you use shallow divers run them on a 3 or 4 color core or behind a Big Jon 20 mini disc off your boards.

Would a keel weight work?

Blowchowski -> RE: lures (6/30/2008 1:15:12 PM)

I've played with different weights over the years but there seems to be too many variables in getting them to perform consistently. I spent a better part of an afternoon a year or two ago in ~30 feet of water pulling weights to see when they'd touch bottom. I got that dialed in right away, but when I added the bait, either a stick bait or crawler harness, or whatever- the drag differences changed the depth not just a little, but a whole bunch. There was even a sizable difference between a stinger scorpion and the regular stinger. I'm sure if you wanted to stick with one bait, you could get it dialed in pretty quickly.

I like pulling the Kaboom gold or silver stickbaits off the boards. Sunny days these really work well in the central basin for me.

Parker31 to answer your original question, there's lots of ways to use the boards.  I know of several boats pulling dipseys off the boards.  Of course these boards are pretty big to overcome the pull of the dipseys.  For us with the basic boards, we'll pull cranks, hot-n-tots or whatever you'd like behind them.  Some guys like to use wire line that will cut even deeper with a smaller lip plug.  Lots to choose from out there.  One thing to remember though, if you're going to try plugs, keep with the same style on each board.  The reason being, if an inside bait is running a lot shallower than an outside bait, should you hook a fish on the outside bait, it may tangle with the inside lure as it drifts back behind the boat after hook up.

Hey, its fishing right?  Give it a shot.  Ask the guys on the VHF when you're out there.  Someone will help.

Sun Dancer -> RE: lures (6/30/2008 6:53:44 PM)

Parker 31 I use plugs behind boards and only plugs, Rapala has a plug called a tail dancer which will dive 30' this works good if fish are in the 30' water column. Later in the summer I will clip a 4 ounce weight to get the lure to 40' and also to 50', clip the weight to 50 ' or 75' and finish any where from 125' to 175' on mono. Works every year for me.

parker31 -> RE: lures (6/30/2008 11:16:21 PM)

sun dancer i just bought 6 of those will i be ok running them at about 150 feet back in 40 fow

Sun Dancer -> RE: lures (7/1/2008 8:47:27 AM)

Parker 31 150' back the lure will run about 30' put out on boards right now the fish are in 60' of water or a little deeper, try that combination in the morning and the 125' with 4 ounces of weight later in the day. Good Luck.

eyes only -> RE: lures (7/1/2008 10:10:06 AM)

Guys, if run Bangos with big dipsys on 3.5 setting how many feet back do I need to let out to reach 60 fow? w/Braided line, 2.0 MPH
