Does anyone know about the sunken barges below the dam? I want to avoid them. to many reports of damaged outdrives. Where below the dam are they located? Do they hold fish?

The sunken barges you heard of is auctuly a wign dam . When you come up river the are located on the Lettsdale side at the upper most end of the buncher  loading docks. If you stay abuot 200yds. from the wall you should be ok . At times the fishing can be great , I like to pull in on the down stream side and cast buzz baits and littel sammys on top . Any crankbaits work but snag in a hart beat . If you find your self comming in from the top raise your drive . I hope this will help

thanks Rodbuilder, I had no clue just heard bad stories about damaged boats. I hope it shows up on the fish finder if I am going slow. I just checked out the ramp in leetsdale. Do you know if it is deep enough for a nineteen foot fishing boat, it was muddy there today. I know about the fee. It just takes too long to run up from rochester or st joes ramp. Thanks again

I don't know how hard it will be to launch a 19' boat. It's really shallow where you tie your boat off since there's no dock.  There's some big rocks in there. If your fishing with someone it would be easier to launch.  Also make sure you have a launch permit or you will have a ticket on your vehicle when you come in.

As you head up river to the dam, on the left side you will see a long wall at the Buncher plant.  On the very end of the wall is where the shallow water is   I've seen boat hit this bar and it was not a pretty site.

thanks muskyfisher. cant wait to try that area, by the way the docks are in and they looked nice. I was there wed.  People talk about the deep hole across the river in front of the old power plant and the mouth of big sewickly creek.

In front of sewickley ck is a good spot but not as good when the river is low.  try fishing in front on the wall at the buncher plant.  a few yrs ago, we were catching a lot of fish trolling hot-n-tots & wiggle warts up near the dam.  you'll need to cruise the area with a depth finder to locate good trolling water. 8' to 12' was most productive.  We caught SM, LM, Sauger, walleye, cats, sheephead, hybrid stripers.  you never knew what was going to hit.  I haven't been there for a couple years but i've been wanting to try it again.  every day i try to go it storms like hell.

Thanks for the good info guys. We hope to try it soon. I had a long pole to see how deep the water was around the dock , it was about four feet today. Talk about getting rained out. We had our yearly walley charter sat. It was rained out, stoppes at a friends place at pymy, soon as we got in the boat it poured. stopped at shenango sunday, could not get out of the car. headed home and stopped at new brighton dam, as soon as i got the poles out we got blasted. today I was trying to wire up a new electric motor inbetween raindrops. thanks again

We've been lucky the last two weekends.  We got off the water just before storms hit.  We still got a good days fishing by starting early. 

By the way, where do you live?  You mentioned leetsdale and brighton dam.  I'm from Ambridge,

today I stopped at the boro building in leetsdale. They told me there is no permit needed this year, just put your boat in. Also they are getting a grant to make a fishing park and upgrade the ramp. They hope to have it done by next year. There have been no improvements done on the ramp, the drop off may still be there. I have heard stories about damaged trailers when taking the boat out. I am new to the area and never used it. Muskyfisher, I live in S. heights , that is why I am interested in this ramp.

Just letting everybody know I have heard of people backing there trailers into some nasty holes on the ramp and needing 4wd to get back out.I work in buncher park so i go there after work sometimes and havent had a problem but use some caution backing in.

We fished sat. from 4 to around 8:30 pm.  Caught two walleye & a channel cat trolling and about a half dozen sauger casting.  Water was a little muddy and quite a bit of current up by the dam.  You need the water to have just a little current for the trolling bite by the dam to be good. 

The docks are really nice and make launching easier.  We had no problems.

Was out Mon for a bit, was still off color with a quicker than average flow. Managed a few whites, smaller eyes, a channel and a decent stiper, all trolling. Have found the HOLE at the launch and its still there ! Its on the far left closest to the docks, other wise its decent.

nice striper. Sunday we stayed in the beaver, caught the same mix of fish. Has anyone tried the area on the ohio where the water boils up from the plant down towards racoon creek? we marhed a lot of fish passing through but someone else was there on the way back.

I live in Hopewell. I mostly fish Erie. Now that I see you don't need a permit I was thinking about giving it a try. I drove down a month ago to check the water depth as I've never launched there. The docks were in and the depth seemed ok. I was wondering if I'm asking for trouble launching a 23 footer there. I have a 1 ton diesel 4x4 but don't want to damage the boat or trailer. If I stay to the drivers side am I o.k.? Any muskies around there??

I have never launched there either. my boat is twenty with a mercruiser. I saw one guy putting his boat in  he told me to keep your trailer away from the docks. the deep hole is close to the docks where you get your trailer stuck. I guess we got to try for ourselfes. good news is the boro is suppose to improve the area before next season. As for musky I here stories. The only ones Ive seen were on the beaver but I fish there often. I have been looking for someone to help put in there incase there is a problem

Have watched bigger boats put in and out and have not seen a problem, but I dont sit there long. I would think you would be fine. Altough now that I think about it, this may have been the launch that I seemed to have backed off the end of the conrete. If I am thinking the right ramp, the river was LOW. It was a couple years ago.[8|]
Use to catch a musky once in a while,fishin for bass, but no size and it's been a few years.  I would imagine there is a decent population and some pigs.

Here we go................Please, the launch is only big enough for one boat at a time, learn how to launch and load up your boat before you show up. Every other guy I see takes 20+ mins. just to get their boat in or out of the water. Please don't respond about how you think these are a$$hole comments, they aren't meant to be. It's just a real pain waiting to launch or leave when you got 2 or more guys that have no idea what they are doing trying to launch a boat. Especially one that would be more at home catching crab on the Bering Sea.

Not sure I completely understand your post. I think you are saying two different things: 
1) People should at least have an idea of how to launch a boat before they back down the ramp. Agreed. I think they should also have all their crap loaded in the boat before they start down the ramp. However, you cannot expect everyone to be as fast as some of us who are more experienced... or just more physically able to go about it faster. 

2) Bigger boats, better suited for the Bering Sea, take longer to launch.....and, do not have as much right to use the launch as smaller boats that can be launched in a flash.

Consider this.... people who own larger boats that didn't start boating yesterday and it is surely not their first boat. I would bet I can back a trailer down the ramp faster than Jeff Gordon. I can back any size boat or horse trailer up as fast as some can drive it forward and that includes around turns. My wife stands and smiles when people stare in amazement when I manuver the trailer. Yep the heavier boat takes a minute longer BUT.... I can still get it out of the way as fast as any small boats. I have to take my time a bit because the weight of the boat would yank the guy (or my wife) who is holding the ropes right off the dock. Also, that kind of momentum can obviously damage both the boat and the dock.  

If I misunderstood your post then I apologize. If not maybe we should decide if carp fisherman really need boats anyway in which case they should not worry about who is using the ramp.

Indian in your post you are pretty hung on yourself about launching.  I am sure you are ok but come on man get over yourself tons of people on here have no problem launching there boat but dnt come on here to brag about it!

I'm not bragging about anything.... I'm just stating a fact for someone who seems to have a problem with others at boat launches. Old Carphead seems to think some people are nothing but in his way. Whether a guy is good or bad at launching a boat or whatever the size of his boat does not matter. It's the attitude that counts. Are they blatantly rude or doing their best. Carphead seems more of one than the other.

You say tons of people on here are good at launching boats. Carphead says tons of people aren't..... and it bothers him. Your thoughts on his post??

Easy now Indian. First off I fish for just about everything not just carp. Second off, I don't think that anybody, BUT those who don't now how to launch/load, or come to the launch unprepared, is in my way. First come, first served. Also, just because the boat is large is not an excuse for taking close to a half an hour to launch. If you have problems go to a empty parking lot and practice, it isn't that hard. You got the wrong impression there guy.

I kind of agree with carp actually.  I've sat at a ramp where an inconsiderate fellow angler positions his boat on the ramp, then gets out, puts all his gear in the boat, then procedes to prepare for launch...  Have that stuff done before you get to the top of the ramp!!  Have the boat ready to go before you hit the ramp...  Hell, launch it, then tie if off and put your gear in.  Some people have no consideration for other people. 

There are however, also lots of people who are very considerate and launch as quick as possible to allow others access.  The people who leave a bad impression are the ones you remember.  [:)]

By no means do I have to launch a large boat, but generally, we are on the ramp for an average of 5-10 minutes tops.  Boat is ready to go, gets loaded and prepped in the parking area, backed down, dropped off and the car is parked.  In and out.  Next car...

Like I said..... if I misunderstood then I have already apologized. I don't see where larger boats take longer. In fact at Erie and many other places the small boat guys are the ones who are more likely to be weekend warriors only a couple times a year and take longer. I agree on all the other stuff. It's the lack of courtesy and common sense that I think aggravates all of us. People who think that just because it's their turn they own the ramp for a half hour to do whatever they want. The ramp is to launch a boat .... period, not to prep a boat or to park it and think about what you need or forgot. Again.... sorry if I took offense to the big boat thing but even though I could probably handle the Bering Sea on a flat day for a couple hours I can still get the hell out of the way faster than the family pontooners and plain ignorant fools. Nothin wrong with carpin either. LOL

thanks for the info on the prop. I got hold of Lee today. I was just kidding about backing in to fast. Just nipped a rock being too close to the dam. I will never learn.
