I don't have any experience fishing there, but I've always wanted to fish the McCloud River.

I did make a trip to San Fran for vacation a few years ago.  We drove through the Russian River Valley (Sonoma County, I think) to go see some coastal Redwoods.  I learned afterwards that it is supposed to be excellent smallmouth fishing, and decent steelheading if your timing is right.

it will be in late july... so i think steelhead and salmon our out of the question... plus i think the shut down all salmon fishing too

McCloud and/or the upper Sac are what i was thinking... but would be up for anything within 4 hours drive

Honestly, that's where I'd go.

If there's flow you could try hiking into some of the Sierra Nevada Mtns and looking for golden trout.

Do you know of "the fly shop" in Redding CA?

It depends on what you want to catch. I was stationed in the Sacramento area for 4 years and did A LOT of fishing. Clear Lake is a big bass factory. There are numerous guides on the lake, plus it's not to far from San Fran.

The Delta is also a big bass factory, close to San Fran, but also has stripers, sturgeon, etc.

Further north, around Redding, you have Lake Shasta. This is a HUGE lake, with Large & small mouth, spotted bass, trout, landlocked salmon, pan fish, etc. It is hard lake to learn due to size.

The Sacramento river below the Shasta dam is famous for the big rainbows. It is a big fast river, and if unfamiliar, a guide will save you a lot of time. Bank access is also limited due to private property, so a guide with a boat is needed. These rainbows to me resemble the ones in Alaska.

The Feather River has a big run of Shad, as well as steelhead, rainbows, smallmouth, and if open, King Salmon.

There are untold numbers of lakes, creeks, rivers, etc that contain fish in the area. The ones above are just some of the best.

Northern California is awesome, I would live there again in a heart beat!
