C'mon Spoonie....using your logic then it's OK to kill a snake for it's skin, or to eat it if you so desire. And the fur market is really booming too. I'm surprised there's anything with fur still alive with the prices they're paying. The fact is I'd say 90% or more of the species I mentioned are killed for sport. And as far as a man not having any stones for being afraid, my nephew is on his third or fourth tour in Iraq and he's afraid of snakes...I don't think you'd want to say he's got no stones to his face.

First off, Thank You to your nephew.  As for being afraid of snakes, that is fine but killing them senselessly is pathetic even if it is done by one of our nation's finest.  Hey, even some of our nation's finest make poor quality decisions when it comes to handling animals (I seem to remember a puppy being thrown over a cliff by a couple individuals in a tasteless, senseless manner).  I would tell that to my brother without hestitation, and he is an Army Ranger.

As for eating...  If you want to eat a snake or keep it for it's skin, have at it.  At least the animal is being utilized for something.  I believe your 90% is high (I would lean the other way and go closer to 20% being for sport).  I personally kill a lot of varmints and know several others that do the same.  In each case, it is specifically done to assist farmers with problems they are having.  This keeps lands open to us for future use on other species, as well as eliminating creatures that torment domestics and destroy farm machinery.  I don't personally keep and sell pelts any longer, although it did help to pay my college tuition when I used to run a trap line in high school.  FYI, the pelt market is stronger now than it has been in the last 10 years (still not what it was back in the 70's and 80's) and there are a lot of people running lines and chasing varmints currently.  Varmint hunting is the fastest growing of all of the hunting sports at this time.

Absolutely, if THAT is your reason for killing it. Everyone I know, that takes the other species you mentioned, take them for the purpose that I mentioned. Plain, and simple there IS, or at least can/should be a difference between the two.

Oh, please point out WHERE, I questioned anyone's manhood for fearing snakes. As I pointed out, I find them a bit disconcerting, and keep a close watch on, or for them myself. Fear, is not always rational, nor does it necessitate killing.

Bravery, is not a lack of fear, but rather how one responds to that which he fears.

I have an irrational fear of snakes, believe me I understand that. I had some experiences as a kid and they've scared the crap out of me ever since. Quite honestly, if I seen on i'll turn faster than it could. I probably couldn't get close enough to kill the thing anyway. i wouldn't mind being able to irradicate them but I'd have to hire someone out.

To each their own... and I'm up for some groundhog hunting. That brings back some great memories.
