  Those White Faces are meen!! Watch 'em take down Wasps like nothin'. Byrds ov Prey put some hurtin' on the snakes & rats. The river rats were the sz. ov coons when I was a kid. Took the .410 with me a few times fishin' Oakmont. Thinkin' ov blastin' some feral cats soon though. What yinzes guys think on it?

Better avoid Lake Arthur if you don't like snakes. Also the Allegheny River. Wilhelm too. Slippery Rock Creek. The Ohio River...

I've had a lifelong fear of snakes, but never have killed one.  Until I find one that seems to want a piece of me for whatever reason, I'll keep it that way.

Here's a good one though.  I get home from work yesterday, and hit the frig. in the basement for my $3.00/Dozen Crawlers.  Going to do a tad of evening river fishing.  Wife informs me that my 9 yr old daughter fed them all to the 2 garter snakes living in a rock pile by the yard.  Said they ate 1 of them that they did see.

My buddy took a big 6ft 3 inch round black snake off a branch at the pay lake last week,
I could not get my hand around it...
it was gourged with mice,,,
nice snake..
It was left unharmed....

thanks for the biology lesson, snakes are important to that ecosystem you are fishing, I suggest like what was recommended to you previously "act like you have a set
", even my ole lady isnt afraid of snakes or even my kid, guess youd rather have your fishing waters overran by chubs and rats

You can like them or not like them, your opinion is your opinion. If I don't like them, I have a right to have my own opinion of them.
You may say I have no balls for not liking snakes, I see no correlation between the two things.
The most likely scenario is that some of you have some superiority complex putting the idea in your head that if you like snakes and aren't bothered by them that it makes you a manly man. Well, all it really makes you is not bothered by snakes.
Possibly you could learn how to accept an opinion that doesn't fall in line with yours.

And in closing I say... Off with their heads!

I cant understand why when people are afraid of something their first response is to destroy it, rather then walk away from it ... thats where I find saying you cry and react like a young baby boy whose testes havent decended yet, by killing the big mean snakey, rather then having the maturity to go...hmmm snake over there, better move elsewhere, cause I hate those hideous things...theres my opinion

Well said, the fact is, most of these guys would probably run like
a little girl when the see them and tell everybody, well, I just let it go on its way. Instead of getting a shovel and cutting the damn thing in half.

Who the h@ll cares whether you run like a girl, or shake it's hand, and say "gooday mate"? It's irrelevant, in neither case, is there a need to kill it. If you live in an area with Rattler, or Copperheads, and you find one under your porch, or in the yard where your kids play. I have no problem if you kill it, but to kill one in the wild, just because you "don't like" them, is assinine pure, and simple.

I think it's a fear that has been drummed into our heads since birth. Ever see a movie or TV program where the snake was the hero? Your mother every tell you it was ok to pick one up and pet it? Anyone ever say -hey come over here and look at the pretty snake I found?

No, I think they were just dropped on their heads when they were young and for some reason, now they want to kill snakes just for the heck of it....because they are little girly boyz...

It's ok to touch and pick up snakes. just make sure you know the difference between a poisonous snake and a non venomous snake.

Not a big fan of snakes..When I was younger (before my testes dropped)I too hated snakes and would try and kill every one I saw. Why?? Irrational fear & ignorance..
I guess it was ingrained into us as a child. I think religion has played a role in this as the serpent was our downfall in the garden...
I guess as I have grown older and learned more about snakes and realize they are part of our lives and need to be there. 
I no longer have the wanton blood lust to just kill critters because I don't like them or fear them. I even stopped and pulled a large Black snake off the road one day. Talk about having to overcome a little primordial fear.

I think as we get older, an start to realize the fleetingness of life, we begin to have a more reflective view on taking it. Even for the hunter the hunt, starts to play a bigger role than the kill.

Nothing to be afraid of my friend, i to am kinda surprised to see one in the wild, seen alot of them and all without incident, I had a gopher snake hiss at me one time when i was walking towards it, he was telling me hey, im over here i will leave you alone if you leave me alone but come any closer i will have to defend myself. Another time seen a california king snake crossing the road, he noticed us and coiled up, (WHEN SNAKES COIL UP THAT MEANS THEY ARE IN THERE DEFENSIVE MOOD AND THEY WILL MORE THEN LIKELY STRIKE AND BITE) and then strike and tried to bite, I was to far away for it to get me, Snakes can only jump half of there body length, i knew that and i did get to close to it. They will not harm you unless they feel they have to defend themselfs, they will go on there way and you should go on yours, no need to hurt or harm or kill them unless its a poisionious one (YOU CAN TELL A POISIONIOUS ONE, THEY HAVE A HEAD SHAPED LIKE A TRIANGLE AND THE LINE IN THERE EYES GOES UP AND DOWN), non poisionouis ones have round pupils and head like a round spoon kind of. The only time someone should kill a snake is when its a threat to you, your animals, your property and i would do that as a last resort because i would contact someone who is quailfied to remove poisionious snakes from homes, buildings,etc first. if need to be you can use a shovel to cut there heads off instead of using a gun to shoot it. Snakes do more good then harm, They must be the most understood reptile there is, people its time to understand more about them, there nothing to be afraid of. The snake in the photo that someone posted is an andaconda native of South America, thats the biggest snake spieces in the world, not to brag or anything but when i was a kid my scoutmaster had one for a pet, he had it wrap around me one time and  I got to hold it, pretty awesome, i knew the snake could hurt me by constriction but the snake never did try to do that.

well as far as snakes go i used to as a kid hunt them not for the killing just to see who could catch the biggest Was like a badge of honor i don't fear them i respect them.i also respect people who fear them but i will try to educate them enough to eleviate some of thier fears.I for one hate yellow jackets, hornets,and the like but if they pose no problem i won't kill them.But when they do (hornets and such) they will take the hornet killer bath not out of fear but because i find no way to cohabitate.

box jelly fish have killed more people then snakes

what do those things have in common? NOTHING  this post is about as bad as the hockey post between flyers and pens fans no matter what everyone in their own opinion is right.


but honestly I hate spiders but dont kill em unless they are on me or in my house. Everyone is afriad of something but there is never any reason to kill. Just walk the other way or ignore it.

Was thinking about this and, not taking anyones side, but what is the difference between killing a snake or killing a groundhog, coyote, crows, coons, bobcat, fox, skunk?? A man doesn't like snakes so he kills them. The others are just killed for the sake of killing them.

There isn't a difference. But, some of the folks want to act like they have big hangers and say don't kill them because they have a purpose.
Well, pretty much everything has a purpose but that doesn't mean they don't have to be killed. Other things can take care of a rat problem, I don't need my garage to be infested with snakes to do that.

It's funny that this is one of the longest threads besides Arthur. Maybe if someone starts a "I was showing a huge snake how big my balls are up at Arthur this weekend" thread it could take over as the mother of all threads.

The species you have mentioned are generally killed as nuisance species around homes, agriculture, livestock, domestic animals...  Snakes pose no real nuisance (unless like mentioned... they are poisonous and around residencies) and do far more good for the environment than bad.

Brookie, you really should be getting the feeling that you are on an island.  You have not been on the boards for long but have become a cancer to the boards.  Perhaps in your own mind, you are the correct one and everyone else is off base.  Regardless, I really feel sorry for your kids if they grow up in your image.

i find all of this kinda funny. grown men are afraid of snakes. my little brother who is 10 walks around picking them up. he picked up a copperhead once(it was a baby) and he luckily didnt get bit  but he wont make that mistake again. he caught 3 water snakes and brought them home to show us.

The other species you mentioned, ARE killed with a purpose. Fox, Coyotes, Coons, and even Skunks, for their pelts. Crows, and Groundhogs can wreak havoc on your garden. and many eat them as well. Groundhogs, ( or their burrows ) are also a threat to livestock. Many farmers will welcome you onto their property to kill Groundhogs. Kill a snake near their barn, or silo though, and see how quickly you get run off.

If you want to kill snakes in, and around your home, or gargage, knock yourself out. We are talking about along the trail, where they are no threat to you. I don't particularlly like snakes myself, and my balls have served me, ( and many women ) quite well. I can "tolerate" them as long as they don't sneak up on me, and then I just jump back ( and take a nitro tablet ). In fact I had a water snake swim up to me, and hang out pretty much at my feet, while fishing the other night. He watched me, and I watched him, and we got along just fine. I even petted him a bit, ( with my rod tip ).
