Bent -> Northern Pymatuning Eyes (6/23/2008 11:28:29 AM)

We had another great morning morning Saturday trolling as far as the crappies go, but haven't been able to get into the eyes yet this season. Every trip over we are catching good numbers of jumbo crappie (11"-13"'s) and some big cats as well, but no eyes. I have always done very well trolling cranks in the Northern part of the lake (Clark Island area) right up to the end of June/mid July depending on the water temp. Has anyone else noticed that the eyes just don't seem to be there or at least in numbers great enough that a person would catch one once in a while? If it wasn't for the great Crappie action i probably wouldn't be making the hour and 10 min. drive, but it would be good to get into some eyes. Maybe i need to head South for deeper water?
Thanks in advance for any useful info!

Try four-five fow/weeds and pop jigs with crawlers. cast out between the pockets of weeds pop it back slow. try to select the right pockets of weeds some are to thick this time of year. anytime of day works. 10:00 am seems to be right for me. If not try 3/8 oz yo-zuri deep diver rainbow color in 18 fow 112 feet back. good luck!

Thanks for the tips on maybe getting back into the eyes! I will give the weeds a try my next trip over. I have heard alot about working the weeds, but never gave it a try i guess mostly because our method has worked well for a long time. I'm up for a change! Thanks again.

Thanks for the info! We'll give the weeds a try next trip over. Just hard to break old habits i guess when it's worked so good for so long.

This has been a long time ago ,but I used to go out at 10 and fish till 1-2 and catch them by the dam in the weeds with a rap. bairly wiggling.

I have found that river eyes are mostly caught at night this late in the year after all the fishing pressure and warmer temps. Try working the shorelines at night, just a thought but I have never done it it's just an idea.

be aware that the walleye populations are way down.  there are a handful of vets there that could still find them if they were hiding under a rock, but it isn't like it used to be.  shoot, two leadcore outfits and some hot n tots were all you needed, or going back farther, night crawler harnesses trolled or drifted would bag you a mess of eating sized fish.   much harder these days.

The PA Pymatuning conspiracy....Ruin the walleye fishing to drive away the fishing crowd then start raising the horse power slowly.........

Hi Bent,

We did pretty well on June 15 (fathers day) in the south. We caught a couple 24" + walleye and a 22". We drift fish weedbeds with crawler harnesses and spinners. Biggest walleye I think I ever caught pushing 25" . Crappies are hitting minnows in the deep.

Big Tuna -> RE: Northern Pymatuning Eyes (6/30/2008 8:43:56 PM)

I fished the spillway in March and the numbers and size of the eyes where very impressive,I caught quite a few fish over 25 inches,my largest was 29 inches.It's hard to believe that every eye in the lake comes to the spillway to spawn,Pymy's pretty good size lake,the thing that I worry about is there are very few litte fish,most are over 20 inches.

rapala11 -> RE: Northern Pymatuning Eyes (7/1/2008 12:06:16 AM)

tuna, we have a creek on the south end where they come up to spawn.  a light on the water shows a whole lot of white eyes at night.  we very seldom fish it.  there are some creeks on the north end, ohio side that are the same.

Big Tuna -> RE: Northern Pymatuning Eyes (7/1/2008 8:10:28 PM)

RAPALA11 are these creeks fishable during the spawn or are they closed,I worked from Easter till halloween and don't get to fish but maybe 1 or 2 weekends a summer,so I'm more of a icefisherman.November is bow time,honker,and fall turkey,Dec,deer gun,and honkers,Jan. is flintlock,and honkers,and the rest of winter is icefishing.Me and my son did real good at the spillway (4) trips,but its really not are style of fishing.I did fish Nov. at snodgrass 4 or 5 years ago and spanked them pretty good on VIBE-E and silver buddies.Years ago I did really good below the dam and after March 15 would head to the spillway.

rapala11 -> RE: Northern Pymatuning Eyes (7/1/2008 11:42:58 PM)

oh, they're fishable, but few do it.  best after dark.
