Just wondering how many of you catch/target walleye up off the bottom. I fished last Sun. (Fathers day) and had a limit for two in a few hours, went this morning and never caught an eye. I did mark fish off the bottom but was reluctant to spend much time there.

Run your dipsys up alot higher when they suspend.

Wasnt there today so dont know what you were facing.  Maybe they were just slow.

Lake Erie 'eyes LOVE to suspend.  Don't be reluctant, target them. 

Most of the time when the fish near the trench, they are nowhere near the bottom.  Very common to catch 'eyes 30' down over 60 fow.

Fished  for hours today.  Launched out of Elk and went west to Walnut.  Turned around and went East of Elk.
Caught 1 Walleye,2 large catfish, and 2 sheephead.  We barely marked any fish.  Same situation for most anglers from those we talked to and didn't see any boats busy with the nets.  Bad day on the water.  Where did all the eyes go?

Why they have them fins....they swim...talked to a buddy who did well out in 61'...heard from another buddy who got 30 in 20-30ft...go figure...lol

2 boats, 38 FOW NE of Ashtabula, 84 walleye by 10:30 AM 20 jets back 30-50 ft with small spoons off big boards, the active fish in this area were in the upper 15 ft of the water column, 2.3-2.8 on the speed, and as is the case with high active fish, saw almost a blank screen all morning

forgot to add, another buddy in small boat took 18 tossing erie dearies on a 10 count in the same area, fun tactic to use when the fish are  that high and that active

Well, we covered a lot of water from 25-40 feet.  There is no way all those fish avoided the fishfinder.  They simply were not there.  I bet we marked a total of 5 fish on the thing.  Pretty sad.

I have had a lot of limit (24-30) walleye days without marking a thing.  Like CB said, they have fins.

Saturday, at least the a.m., was an OFF day to be sure Slay.  I was out myself and we STRUGGLED to boat 3 '03 clones between 6am and 11am and I covered the bottom half of the water column with everything but the kitchen sink, delivered in every fashion imaginable, at down speeds from 1.7 to 2.4 very little seen on the screen in tight (18 to 28 fow)  Covered a range of depths from 18 fow out to 40 fow.  Didn't find a decent picture until we hit 38 fow and there were scattered "wads" of fish.  We managed 1 of our 3 in that 35 to 40 and TONS of junk mixed in with them.  Even then, the marks were all within 10 feet of the bottom.  I have never seen walleyes in CLEAR Lake Erie water hold in the top 20 feet of the water column inside 50-55 foot overall depths.  Out deeper and/or in "green" water, yes, I have seen them taken in the top 20.

Not really sure why they would want to be that tall in the column when I had 69 surface temp, 68.5 -68.7 down 15 feet and 67.7 to 68.2 down 35 feet.  Those are all comfy walleye temps.  To bet that tall, there needs to be a reason, and all that boat traffic that was out Saturday should have forced them down as well.

Bottom line, high active fish are on the move and definitely avoid your screen, the signal cone is so small down to 20 feet Id be more surprised if you actually marked more than 5 fish, probably about 3-4 ft in diameter at that depth, and with moving fish you get the picture, or lack of picture in this scenario,just because you dont mark them, doesnt mean you cant catch them, Storm Warning remarked about fish this high in shallow warm water, fact of the matter is ANY fish will leave preferred temps when feeding, sometimes we are our own worst enemies trying to out think a pretty simple creature, by the way, we found these fish with forward looking sonar and by the time the boat got close, our regular fishfinder was blank, sometimes it pays to think outside your own comfort zone

Hmmm....Alright, sounds reasonable.  I suppose the cone is way smaller than what we were used to.  We were fishing the bottom.  I will vary depths next time instead of lowering the riggers down when the the bottom gets deeper.

Most fish we have caught shallow have not shown on the finder. CB 61ft sounds like the trench almost. I was thinking of trying it this week, they are spread out pretty good though. I think you made a good call of staying home this weekend. It was a tough bite!

Storm, was wondering what temp the walleye prefer. Is the 67 to 68 a pretty good norm for them? Thanx

I manage a few fish in 62 fow out of geneva on saturday. Once we found them, we more or less trolled the same spot.

My buddy lost a rod (St. croix premier) and reel ( Garcia ) when something hit and dragged it out of the rodholder. Ouch!!! Then we stopped and tried to troll for the rod but could not find it.  Lesson to be learned, show passengers on your  boat how to lock the rod holder and do not take their experience for granted.  It would  be something if some one caught that fish and PMed me about returning the rod.

They were there, just took a little work to find em....Interesting, that you guys mention the empty screen cause thats what we had when we started gettin em....  Got 3 tickets friday in 24-30.  got 3 fish in 3 hours there sat morning, went deep and ended in 38 where we filled the box quickly.  Sunday went back to 38 and couldn't mark a fish, but got our 2 tickets rather quickly.
