The water has tested for high levels of human feces (****) in a recent test.  From what I understand they are not closing the beaches yet or hitting the panic button, but they are pointing the finger at the houseboats they rent.  Apparently people are taking porta-potties aboard and pooping into them if the toilet that's on the houseboat is occupied and dumping it into the lake.

CATMAN610 -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/19/2008 8:13:05 PM)

so its like a larger version of shawnee lk, well shawnee does dump into the juniata which does flow into raystown.
They better get to work on shawnee before it gets out of hand.

of course i'm kidding,,not about the work needed at shawnee though

DanesDad -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/20/2008 12:49:23 AM)

Are they talking about high levels of coliform bacteria (which is found in human feces), or actual turds?

nut -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/20/2008 6:26:39 AM)

might be some little kid throwing baby ruths into the water ala caddyshack

The problem lies with the morones that have boats with porta potties, not the boats with holding tanks. Holding tanks need pumped out, porta potties just get dumped (usually). Dont blame houseboats on this problem 95% of houseboats have a sealed holding tanks.

coolerfull1 -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/20/2008 8:52:29 PM)

I know the houseboats have tanks that get pumped out, but the houseboats are indeed the problem.  It made the news and reported them as the problem.  I would have guessed it anyhow, it's easier for any other boat to make a run to the bank.  Take a houseboat, which have a variety of capacities, with only one toilet and 4-10 people waking up with the beer poops, where do you think they are going?  Poop in the porta pottie and dump it.  If you don't believe me, you can probably call seven points marina and ask.  Little potties are probably the most recent addition to their 'not allowed' list.

Just like Carl Spackler said,"its no big deal"

I want that lake scrubbed, sanitized and disinfected!

cjbs2003 -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/20/2008 11:49:56 PM)

I bet the stripers, lakers and walleyes will taste great with a poop flavoring! Mmmmm...

duncsdad -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/21/2008 7:36:41 AM)

Amazing!!!!

A 28 mile long, sometime 150 foot deep lake is now made environmentally a disaster over some human waste from an extremely small percentage of its users, yet over 1000 cattle dumping their waste daily in the Spruce Creek watershed which contains a stream that is measured in feet across and sometimes inches deep is of no concern.

saltflyfisher -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/21/2008 8:10:49 PM)

Most holding tanks have a lockable bypass value. One position and the head fills the tank, the next position and the head dumps directly overboard. Unless someone installs a padlock it can be turned to be dumped over. Fines are hefty if found in violation of dumping. Any charters I've ever used the values are locked and remains are dumped into a tank. People run into trouble w/ using the head based on the holding tanks are of limited size and do fill fast w/ extended use between emptying. Pump-outs also cost money.

There have been closings of lake here in Nj from the same problem. These problems they found were from babies diapers. Parents weren't changing the kids and the kids were swimming in them.

your kidding right? hmm then we need to quit our sons swimming classes at YMCA cuz there is 30+ babys in their diapers in the pool so that cant be healthy (YEA RIGHT)

you actually think it was from baby diapers? have u ever seen baby feces ? 10 dirty diapers = what 1 man can do every 3 hours. Im sure alot of the problem comes from local sewage dumping  out of peoples houses  into small streams  and creeks then into the lakes....Anyone ever test lake rowena?

saltflyfisher -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/22/2008 1:15:51 PM)

Get off your soap box for a moment. What I said is this is what was found to be a problem. Thats all, nothing to do w/ your kid. So relax.

I never said it was bout my kid or directed towards you just Im saying dirty baby diapers in general in no way would ever be the problem unless theres is a high volume of dirty diapers being tossed into those lakes. Sounds like to me someone that said thats a problem didnt do any investigating. Prolly some enviromental hygenist getting his pockets lines to say that was the problem.

Growing up in somerset county near the Bens creek i witnessed so many open septics running right into it until recently a treatment plant was built an lines were put in place.

saltflyfisher -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/23/2008 6:45:06 AM)

I know I'm continuing this rather mundane thought, but here we go. You have a lake, its warm full of bacteria already due to the heat and now you've given it food through feces. Pool: its warm but the major difference is no bacteria because of the chemicals. Ever been on the coast when a beach is closed from well I don't know, a algee bloom from a sewer break. Your right the DEP is a money grubbing group.

I just thought this one deserved a quote....

Also,
It seems to me if houseboats and other boaters are the reason for the recent problem on raystown, then the number of them on the lake must have dramatically increased this year (which it didn't). I know of a guy who recently got some type of parasite from raystown, which was said to be linked to human feces. That being said, I wonder how he got it, because he doesnt swim, he just fishes. It makes me wonder if he took a drink, which would be a bad idea on any lake.

Where my dad lives on the Chesapeake Bay, a lot of sail boat moor there. They then dump their crap from their Johns into the harbor. I have actually seen terds floating by. Completely irresponcible! But, that is the world we live in these days... I do believe that the house boaters on Raystown are partly responcible, but I also think it maybe over flowing septic tanks that run into the many feeders creeks Raystown has. This has been a wet spring and early summer, good conditions for people's crap to make a mess...

This kind of misinformation is appalling. Any one familiar with dairy farming knows this statement is blatantly false. I am willing to meet with you to count cows and examine the waste they are dumping.

Care to elaborate a bit?  Why is it false?

btw... Harpster's have around 1,300 cattle.  [sm=eek10.gif]

Read this study done by Juniata College, then tell me agriculture is not to blame for the problems on Spruce Creek.

I'm anxious to hear your response.

glenp -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/27/2008 3:11:40 PM)

I am fully aware of Harpster's cow numbers...and I can tell you that their manure does not go into the creek. Prove to me that it does...that's right...you can't because it doesn't. DEP keeps a close eye on these kinds of things. Farmers spend huge $$ on nutrient plans. Incidentally, Harpster's manure storage is far from the creek. I just get tired of the kind of crap that was passed off as factual here.

glenp -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/27/2008 3:19:43 PM)

I did not say that Ag is not to blame...I was responding to the post that implied that manure was being dumped in the creek. It is more likely that commercial fertilizer is the problem. However before you criticize agriculture, remember that many homeowners use the same commercial fertilizers.

Sure, manure is not being dumped into the creek from the manure spreaders, but every time it rains, the manure floods into the stream. Not to mention the fact that constant spreading of manure can get into groundwater that feeds streams.

Your post suggests that the farms manure goes into some kind of safe holding tank away from the stream and stays there. You and I both know it is there only until it is spread on the fields, and it eventually will wash into Spruce Creek. I drive past the farm every day on the way to my office, and it seldom happens that I dont see manure being spread on one of the fields.

Yes, many home owners use fertilizer on their yards, but few do, and the ones that do, do it in insignificant amounts as compared to farms.

well, opps!!!  I guess it does.

[:)]

I don't think Shawn meant it was being directly dumped in the stream by dump truck.

What "commercial fertilizer?"   The MANURE that gets spread on the fields every spring?  The cow dun that comes off their butt and falls to the ground?  No seepage into the water table?

Whatever the case~

Spruce Creek is a more decimated than Raystown.

Perhaps you should start letting us know when we're not "factual" -- then prove it.

glenp -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/27/2008 4:05:13 PM)

You're showing your ignorance...commercial fertilizer is not manure. It is the petroleum based product that most farmers use. It is also the stuff most yard fertilizers are made off. Silverkype...what day do you want to go to Harpsters? I can prove what I am saying...you can't prove what you are saying.

I would encourage you guys to not eat any meat (cows poop), eat or drink any milk products (cows poop), eat any vegetables (they need fertilized).

Apparently you did not read the study I posted. Manure is getting into the creek. It is the cause of the very high nutrient levels. Anything you spread onto the ground will seep into the groundwater. Anything spread on the surface can turn into run-off during a rain. Both will enter the creek.

Can you argue against Juniata College's findings? Let's hear it.

glenp -> RE: human feces in raystown waters (6/28/2008 12:17:24 PM)

There could be several reasons for the excessive increase in nutrient concentrations seen
in the Little Juniata River during September. Although farming is prevalent along its
banks, it is unlikely that all of the nutrients came from farm runoff. No septic tank or
manure pit leaks were reported, nor were any highway spills. Two railroad bridges cross
the river roughly one mile upstream from LJ2, and chemicals or fertilizers carried in
railroad cars could have leaked
