How bad was the Walleye Kill at Pymatuning several years ago when we had the HOT Summer. I have not fished Pymatuning since that summer. Anyone I talked to said there was not much of a Walleye bite the past few years. I see on different Forums that the eye's and not doing to good.
   I am from Cambria Co. and it is pretty far to drive and get skunked!

populations are way down, but the fish caught are bigger than normal.  the fish kill a few years ago had little to do with the fishery being in trouble, from what i have read and heard.  i fished during the die off and did see a lot of really nice eyes floating belly up.  state claims in was an oxygen problem.

What part of Cambria county are you from? I'm also from Cambria county and can relate to a long trip for naught, welcome to the forum.

Rich, wasn,t it the big ones but few small ones died off?

rapala11 -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/17/2008 11:48:11 PM)

john, i remember counting over twenty fish floating in a 1/4 mile stretch and all those that i saw were bigger than 18 inches.  saw no small ones that day.

Ya, me too. Everyone I saw was over 18. Weird thing there![image]http://forums.fishusa.com/micons/m10.gif[/image]

biggest was 25 or so.  funny, but i have been fishing that puddle since the early 70s and that was the only time i saw anything like that.

Bronzeback2, I am from Cresson in Cambria Co.  We use to fish Pymatuning often but have not fished it for several years.
Doing my eye fishing at Glendale Lake, in Cambria Co. Trowl crawler Harness's , get a few each trip. largest was 29.5"

bronzeback2 -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/18/2008 6:04:11 PM)

jbmjr,  I'm from outside Ebensburg and chase those Glendale eyes too, leeches and crawlers, check out the fish commission home page on stocking they've really upped the amount their putting in Raystown  (eyes) so maybe we'll have a productive fishery there someday , would be closer than Pymy and the Allegheny for us.

jbmjr -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/19/2008 1:34:51 PM)

Bronzeback2, I did the Raystown thing for Stripers back mid 80's thru early 90's. Softshells where hard to beat. Caught lots of them largest being  30 Lb. They catch a fair amount of eyes on plugs at night fishing for Stripers, at Raystown.
Think I may try Glendale tonight.

leadmen -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/19/2008 1:43:29 PM)

that kill off was a virus and has passed it also hit the muskey in the 80s and alot of pred fish i heard a little girl caught a 20 lb stripper at the dam in pym had no idea there were stripers in there mmm may have to fish that agin its been years never bagged a stripper and i live by west branch i also heard there in lake milton dont know may have to dust off the plugs and large soft baits

Storm Warning 2 -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/20/2008 3:44:48 PM)

I have never heard of a true Striper in there but they did catch quite a few LARGE hybrids at the Spillway this spring.  They washed over from the Management Area.  I wish a lot more would so that we could get some control on the Alewife problem on the fishable side.

rapala11 -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/20/2008 8:36:37 PM)

hey matt, where ya been?  fishing pymy much?

jbmjr -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/21/2008 9:21:37 AM)

Bronzeback2, I see your from Near Ebensburg. Do you fish Yellow Creek Dam much? We ice fish out in front of the Observation Hut above the beach. 8/12 foot of water and we catch some huge Largemouth on shinners. Largest was 23", lots of pike and a few jumbo Perch.
  We never fish it in the summer but I am told it has more 'eyes than Glendale.

Storm Warning 2 -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/21/2008 4:08:19 PM)

Hey Rap,

Been busy.  Fished a tourney 2 weekends ago at Pymy.  48 guys, grand total of 5 walleyes caught, well, 6.  We let a 14 7/8" fish go.  Caught it on black/silver hot n' tot just above Manning in 6 fow.

Don't plan on spending much more time on Pymy this year.  Has really been an off year, even for the once "unbelievable" crappie fishery.  Hard to spend much time on the "dead sea" when 'eyes are starting to work in tight on the bigger pond to the north[:)]

bronzeback2 -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/23/2008 6:08:01 PM)

jbmjr,
Sorry didn't reply quicker was working over weekend  (couple years to retirement ), never fished yellow creek much even though its close, have heard of some quality bass and a few years back some northerns but not much on the eyes. Back to Glendale have you run into the nicer perch there, last year hit a couple days with some jumbos but haven't found any decent ones this year.

eyesandgillz -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/24/2008 1:22:47 PM)

Have any of you fellows that fish Glendale and Yellow Creek ever heard of any walleye stockings in Wilmore dam?  Lots of small crappies in there as I found out over Memorial weekend but I didn't have a lot of time to fish so I never tried for anything else.  Seems like it would be a good place for eyes.

jbmjr -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/24/2008 1:46:18 PM)

bronzeback, picked up a couple jumbo perch while trolling for eyes, at Glendale but most of them are tiny!
I have been working 6 days also, 5 1/2 years till I can go at 62, then look out fish!!

jbmjr -> RE: pvmatuning walleyes (6/25/2008 1:35:50 PM)

Eyesandgillzs, Checked Pa Fish Comm. site and they had no record of walley stocking at Wilmore , went back to 1991. Lots of bass and crappie
in Wilmore. County owned, electric motors only. Good Fishing-jbmjr
