Carpet Bagger -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/16/2008 9:38:13 PM)

Every state is different in regaurds to breaks on wheels....

Florida for instance you are not required to have breaks....some states only 1 set of breaks...

PA is breaks on all wheels

pghmarty -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/16/2008 10:00:38 PM)

Boat dealers sell trailers as a package that are undersized for the boat.
The trailer might be rated under 3000lbs
The dual axle trailer on my 20' jet boat did not have brakes-boat might be under 3000 but with a big block
& dual  batteries it was probably close- when the trailer weight is added it was probably 3800-4k
Brochure weight on a Checkmate 219 Persuader is 2850lb with Alpha and small block.
Mine has a Bravo Drive, 454 big block(+500Lbs) then I added dual large batteries, 3 anchors, small tool box, bolster seats, stereo with 2 NOX subwoofers and 3 amps.

All models of that boat were on the same size trailer-single axle with surge brakes.

Of the 5 boats that I have owned none were inspected prior to me buying.
My Four Winns came from Angola NY and My Checkmate came from Rochester NY.
Other 3 were from PA

nitro 929 -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/16/2008 10:13:50 PM)

What happens if you boat is under 3000 lb and you had brakes added because you travel a big mountain to get to the lake.  The boat is a 18 foot alum. with a 115hp mercury.  The reg. says 2850 do I still need it inspected?

Indian Summer -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/16/2008 10:32:39 PM)

Under 3000 lbs, no inspection needed.

I think the state needs to take a look at the fact that they have created a situation whereby they are banning trailers as they come from manufacturer. [sm=bs.gif]

What's next.... mandatory third headlight on passenger vehicles?? Doh!

MuskyMastr -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/16/2008 11:48:27 PM)

All axles are required to have brakes, some older trailers were not manufactured this way, and the PA trailer legislation is fairly new, so I imagine that most of those manufactured prior to the new laws are ok.

gobyking -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 4:08:01 AM)

I'm glad this thing is retroactive Musky(I hope if you are right),this would cause a lot of problems with the dudes on here.My problem from earlier with the capacity plate should be a no brainer(I HAD THE TITLE TO THE TRAILER).Why should I in good faith try to register a trailer if I had something to hide?I am trying to go by the law but even the troopers and state employees don't know what the right answer is.I had to call two different barracks in two counties talking to 5 different troopers and finally talked to a corporal who explained the correct thing to do.If the common officer or trooper doesn't know the protocol, who does? I lived in Florida for 3 years and the joke is that all these hoops PA residents have to go through are a scam to keep gov't employees working. All I had to do in FL is send in $36 a year and that was it.No inspection or anything. My trailer could have been a flat bed truck, they don't care,it is all through the mail.PA sucks because they don't have as much water as FL and never will.

It cost me $36 a year to register my Tahoe in FL,no need to go to an inspection station,THERE AREN"T ANY.Go online and you get your little sticker for the license plate in less than a week for $36 a year.

PA sucks for people trying to do the right thing, other states cater to the downtrodden and poor.Hey,look at it this way, there will be fewer Mexican illegal workers here in the winter months because of the laws.I guess it is the ying-yang theory.

Had to edit this, not sure what the cost of the each vehicle was but it WAS NOT very far from either side of $36 on the truck and the boat.Just in case any of you nerds out there have a bone to pick.

I have a friend that bought a brand new 21 foot Lund Baron last year. Only one trailer axle has brakes. Anyone know when the law was created?

Carpet Bagger -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 10:20:53 AM)

It doesnt matter...Each state has its own law in regaurds to trailer laws.  If your buddy got a brand new boat, he probaly bought the trailer and had the option of getting breaks on all tires and maybe didnt go for it....The boat may also weigh under 3000lbs and not even require breaks.  I have been getting my trailer inspected just for piece of mind to be honest.  Last year we did a complete overhaul with springs, bushings, breaks, and coupler.  This year I put on new tires...

It has been this way since i have owned my Trophy...which is going on like 8 years now....I just never have heard of it being enforced so strictly.

MuskyMastr -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 10:34:22 AM)

Speaking of not being enforced, has anyone ever been or heard of someone being pulled over for going over 55 when towing a trailer?  And if that is the case how can the trucks run 65?  We don't have split limits for them.

gizmos -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 10:51:42 AM)

I'm curious about the 55mph thing also. I've been over 55 on the downside of  79 for years, just to get up a little steam for the next hill. [8|]

Indian Summer -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 11:57:36 AM)

Wouldn't the GVW rating take into account not only the ability to support the max weight but also to stop it? I still say the law is uncalled for.

Again.... anyone know the cost to add brakes to the rear axle?

I'd like to hear the answer to MuskyMastr's questions too.

Carpet Bagger -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 12:38:18 PM)

I just talked with penDot...did you know you can trailer over 8'6''??  I didnt either...but they told me that they have no regulation on width under 10ft only total vehicle length....Looks like a 9'6" beam is in my future...

Roads that have separate limits for trucks usually have them posted on the speed limit sign.
I think the speeds are also meant for trucks over 21,000 lbs

pghmarty -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 2:16:26 PM)

Has anyone ever been checked for trailer inspection in PA?

Has anyone ever been checked for trailer weight in PA?

Carpet Bagger -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 2:20:56 PM)

I never have been checked..but i guess they have been checking lately...so look out...

Trout About -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 2:32:13 PM)

My uncle was fined a few years ago for uninspected trailer.  He was towing from lake City to Walnut.

MuskyMastr -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 4:05:56 PM)

How much was the fine?

Trout About -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 4:14:29 PM)

I don't know.  I just remember him ranting about it, and having to get it inspected and taking it to show them it was done.

bulldog1 -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 5:10:29 PM)

I think the cost to brake the second axle would be around $175 or so. I re-did my complete brake system last year from the master cylinder to both axles including new backing plates and hubs for around $500. Bought all parts on-line. If I had it to do over I would go with discs though.

MuskyMastr -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 7:06:09 PM)

I am re doing mine right now and have decided to go with electric.  Based on my past experience with hydraulics on trailers, the maitnence seems like it will be about the same and less hassle once the electrics are on.

pghmarty -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 7:49:11 PM)

If adding brakes to a second axle-
Is it OK to install electric brakes and keep the existing surge
brakes on other axle?

I don't need to do this but thought it may be a good question to ask[8|]

MuskyMastr -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 7:54:10 PM)

I would think so, but, with existing surge breaks, it would be the expensive way to go, when you figgure in battery backup, controlers etc
vs. line splitters and an additional set of backing plates

Mikastorm -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 8:37:32 PM)

Surge brakes worked great on the twin axel trailer for the 24ft. Thompson I had. Hit the Niagra bar allot, never a problem. Now I don,t know about big hills. Don,t see why they wouldn,t work. That boat , also, was a coast gaurd boat in Niagera.

kayak99 -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/17/2008 10:15:40 PM)

I don't think that 55 MPH speed limit for trailers is true.  If someone could cite the PA Code stating that we could know for certain but I have run through radar many times with a trailer at the 65 MPH speed limit (and sometimes a little over) and was never stopped.

ready2fish -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/18/2008 6:36:49 AM)

Guys, chill..............There is NO seperate speed limit for vehicles towing trailers. If the speed limit is 65 then that's what your allowed to travel.

Think of it this way, a semi would only be able to go 55. That's nothing more than a truck towing a big, long, trailer.

Now, there are certain "Harardous Grades" or other roadway hazards that may be addressed by a lower speed limit but like already mentioned that usually requires you to be over 21,000 lbs.

Someone asked what the fine would be for uninspected trailer, same as a car.     Fine is $25 plus court costs, totaling $108.00

Indian Summer -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/18/2008 9:21:07 AM)

The fine is alot higher than just getting it inspected. $108 is correct. I had a friend get busted last year 2 minutes from home in Ross Twp.

CB.... looks like the max width isn't 10 feet????

I still think 55 is the limit. I've heard that from alot of people. The reason you don't get pulled over is because, like many laws, they don't enforce it, just like inspections until now. Plus they'd be pulling over every rig that came down the road. My personal opinion is that the police don't think much of the law themselves and many probably pull a trailer themselves and run at the posted limit.

dmksra -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/18/2008 9:46:21 AM)

Added 2nd axle with surge brakes to my 24'. Cost about 300. Looked at marina last yr and about 95% of trailers were either not inspected or did not have brakes on both axles. Govt check points at marina  are just going too far. Last trip out last yr I got a thorough check at dock, went out to Canadian border and got checked again, then when I retuned to dock I received a total checking, including  being questioned about possibly being a charter boat and how long I new people I was fishing with. Caught a lot of fish but was not worth the harrassment

Indian Summer -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/18/2008 1:36:39 PM)

dmksra.... don't see in you profile where you live. Wondering where you had your brakes done?

chugbug -> RE: Warning to Anyone using Lampe Launch (6/18/2008 1:43:51 PM)

I wish someone who is reporting the 55 MPH max speed for vehicles with trailers would cite where this is outlined in the PA Vehicle Code. I've looked through the whole thing and can't find it referenced anywhere. If there is anyone on this board who would know the Vehicle Code my money would be on Ready2Fish and he says it ain't a law.
