Has anyone fished with this outfit that can tell me if you were satisfied with the trip? I'm heading there in July of 09 and I am trying to dig up as much info as I can. "Alaska Camping and Fishing Adventures" Rick Serena, Owner/Guide/Captain

Tippy, Did the Montana trip wipe out any hope of making it to Alaska? I would still be up for a trip. Just need enough time to gatehr the needed funds.

have never fished with them but I did spend 3 weeks in alaska last summer & it was great hope to go back next year, you will have a great time

Tippy I am not sure but I think it is in the even years when they get the large run of pinks, I was there last year & was told this year would be there big run.

I have fished with that outfit. It is not what I expected. Rick Serena know how to line sockeye. I would check his guide license. Guides must have a license to guide on certain rivers in alaska. Some waters are open to everyone. Good luck and be prepared to rough it.

silvercoho.... as a licensed outfitter I can tell there is an interesting story behind your post. Many Alaskan's don't seem to need much to survive and have fun. Bring jerky and some other personal items eh?

Where in Alaska? I cannot attest to any guide service. I do not think it is possible to "not catch" a lot of fish. I lived in Anchorage for 4 years and I can tell you that the fishing is stupendous. I prefer Sockeye fishing as they are very acrobatic and plentiful. I hope you get to fish them when they are still fresh (not all red and gnarled up). The Russian river is loaded with them sometime in late June I believe. The Pink salmon or "humpies" as they call them, generally blacken the water in June there are so many of them (in Valdez anyways). Chum salmon are fun to catch, though they look dogtoothed and nasty. The Kenai river gets a second run of King salmon at that time if I remember correctly. The biggest ones are caught on that river at that time. 60 to 100+ lbs. You can catch a lot of wild Rainbows and Dolly Varden, and even some arctic char. They are all foraging on salmon eggs and smolts. So many places to go there. Big Susitna, Little Susitna, Willow creek, Eagle creek,...on and on and on.... Good luck to you!

I know a guy in Alaska he is a guide up there. He says its a great time. So much fun it is unbelievable. Humpys run in the even years not the odd years.

So I can assure you that they at least run in odd years for sure. They were there in great numbers. I had bald eagles eating fish 20 feet from me all day long and even had a large maybe 800 lb (guess) sea lion feeding on the school. He would toss a few up in the air and snap thier backbones in the process. After he immobilized enough of them, he would float on his back and lay them on his belly to devour them. A fascinating thing to witness. You are so gonna love it.

You will be sleeping in a tent. No comforts that you might expect. Heat from a camp stove inside your tent. No refrigerator or shower. I hope you hit a nice run of salmon. Rick does know how to "line" sockeye. Lining is what everyone does to catch sockeye. You will be fishing the Kinai River most likely also the Russian River. These are huge rivers especially the Kenai and very fast. Be careful wading. I was there last August. You might be able to catch a king salmon or two if you go in early July. By mid July the king salmon fishing is prohibited. Pink salmon are fun to catch but no one eats them. Sockeye are the best eating salmon. Good luck! You will have fun. Be safe.

Thats what I signed up for. Who wants to go to Alaska and stay at a fancy resort when you can sleep in a tent near the rivers? We are going July 19th of 2009. Do you have any photos of you trip that you can share?

Also I told him about coming up for a week in 2009 and he said humpys dont run in the odd years only even. Its every other year so 2008, 2010 ect. http://www.alagnaklodge.com/calendar.htm.
