I'm a Ryan Whitney supporter.  His absence is a huge deal, especially if he's out until mid-January.

He played with this foot injury all last season.  If people can't cut him some slack looking back on last season where so many have called him "overpaid and underachieving" "soft" "purse swinger", to name just a few things, those people's perspecitve, or lack thereof is quesionable at best.  He's their #2 defenseman.  They played in the cup finals, last year, due in no small part to his contributions.  When Alex Goligoski turns the puck over like it's contagious.  And the power play sputters early next season, without Whitney.  People will be begging for Ryan Whitney to return to the club.

As much as I love to bust on Whitney Spears and call him soff and the like, he is one hell of a skater and next too Gonchar, he is our biggest offensive weapon on the blueline.  Skating is by far his greatest asset and he apparently was unable to do so, to his standards last season.  Whitney is still young and is really just now entering the "start" of his career as an NHL defenseman, the best is still to come from Mrs. Whitney.

He is however still just that, pretty much a one dimensional D-man, offense only and he still looks lost in his own end.  He's still afraid to get in front of the net and move some people around and he almost refuses to take a hit to make a play.  Always has, more than likely always will.

As I said earlier though, perhaps all that will change with maturity and he will turn into a complete D-man and be an key piece to the Penguin machine for a long time.  And D, if you want, I can swing over the arena and pick you up a Whitney t-shirt, there's plenty on the shelves...

Thanks for the offer, but I don't wear shirts with other men's names on them, especially ones that are 12 years younger than I am.  That stuff's awfully ghey, and the kind of thing Flyer fans do with regularity.

I appreciate the offer though!  You can buy me a plain old Penguins shirt though if you want.

Ohh here we go.

I can't believe you had something good to say about Whitney Smallie. I think you know as well as I do how much he'll be missed. But, it's not like were not capable of picking up the slack.

Give the fair weathers time, they'll all be asking for him sooner or later.

OK, relax.

I think Whitney could be a top 10 defenseman in the league if he wasn't lazy. Has been lazy from game to game throughout his career. Some games he plays amazing, some he is invisible. He doesn't hit anybody, hangs on to the puck in the defensive zone way too long sometimes, and his size doesn't fit the game he plays. Has a great shot if he is on the net, and is a good power play defenseman.

Will he be missed? Time will tell IMO. Maybe Goligoski will fill in nicely. We'll see. BTW, the Pens have a lot of talent in Wilkes-Barre and don't worry about injuries or the loss of Hossa,Malone,Roberts, and Laraque.

Deadbolt, I honestly don't know how much he'll be missed.  The Pens have 8 or 9 D that are considered "NHL ready".  Sure they might miss his production a bit, but that depends on how Letang or Goligoski produce.  Especially Letang, since it's probably a good bet that he'll be filling in Whitney's spot on the powerplay.  As goby said, when Whitney shows up to play, he's great.  Most other nights, you hardly notice him.  Normally I'd say that's good for a D-man, but when you're a guy who's supposed to be an offensive threat, not so much...

Heh, I have plenty of nice things to say about Whitney, I've met him at a couple of season ticket holder functions and he's a good kid and can be a hell of a hockey player.  My problem with him lies more in the "nights off", and his inability to hit the net.

I wouldn't make that bet, don't forget Therrien runs this bench still.  Watch Rob Scuderi log 30 minutes a night now & #1 power play time, or Malkin continues to play the left point. ugh.

Goligoski won't make the club until someone else goes down injured.

The defense will look like:
Gonchar - Orpik
Gill - Scuderi
Eaton - Letang

I'm confused?

I think you're saying that it's a good thing for Eaton to be 3rd pairing?  or that Eaton will surely get injured?  Probably the latter, but I agree with both.

Don't forget, Sydor is a Penguin too, he'll play over Goligoski too.

Yeah D, using the word "injury" and Eaton in the same post is almost enough to have him end up on the IR.  I hope he can make it a season, he's a solid D man when he's in there and a hell of a shot blocker.  Unfortunately he's made of balsa wood.

And yeah, he's a good 3rd pairing as well, but he was outstanding with Gonchar before he got hurt, so I'd look for him to be back there to start the season.
