Well it appears Fluery has been signed, so the core is pretty well locked up. Now we have to adress the supporting cast. I am a bit suprised that Hossa felt his chances at a cup were better in Detroit, the the Burgh. Apparently he saw something, or a lack of something that caused him to feel that the Pens aren't quite there yet, even with himself in the lineup. The money, really wasn't an issue, and he is taking a risk on a 1 year deal, over the 7 the Pens offered him.

I'm more disappointed at the combined loss of Ruutu, and La Rock. The pens are losing some needed toughness. Not just from the "enforcer", "agitator" perspective. But from the hardnose board work of the checking line, as well.

Guess you dont remember the 92-93 Pens team who looked better on paper and had a better regular season record then the previous cup winning teams not making it to the big one, Detroit has a bullseye on their backs now and teams will do almost anything to take them down, this is gonna be a interesting season for sure

Ya know, I never thought of that aspect.

Everyone will play thier best against detroit. The pressure is on them..

I'm calling the 1,2,3 in the east next year.

Penguins
Montreal
Washington/Tampa

Ok i guess 1,2,3,4.

Either way, this season will be amazing. I'm honored to BS it with all of you.

I know your out there tippy and inuk.....

Eric Godard will take care of some of the stuff Laraque did, tho perhaps not as well.  Ruutu will be missed.

Here's Hossas angle:  His option was to make about 7 mil a year for the best remaining years of his hockey career.  OR, he could take that for one year, in the hopes that he'll put up great numbers and be worth even more after that year.  The best way to put up good numbers is to be on a good team with good line mates.  Hossa is very good but make no mistake, playing with Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen and company WILL inflate his numbers.  And likely to win him a cup.  But the real bonus will come after next year when he cashes in on all of that success.

All that said, I hated to see him go to a team that really doesn't need any more firepower.  In hindsight, we should have pushed harder to get Malone to come back.

Fedotenko has good upside-some guys really blossom under the right system.  Satan (pronounced "SAY-ton", by me anyway) has work ethic issues, but maybe he'll get over that here.  We can only hope.

Well Detroit sure made some excellent moves to stay at the top of the hunt. The did it without tossing out stupid big money.

Shero has been pretty successful as well. he has locked up the core, and not for outlandish money. Most really didn't expect Hossa to be anything than a rental. Didn't work out but a legitimate run at the cup, doesn't come that often, so it's worth the risk ( close, damned close ). As the FA period got closer I think Shero believed he could sign him, and was ready to sweeten the offer. Signing with Detroit for 7.4 took everyone by suprise. Hossa really seemed happy here, and I expected him to sign before Orpik would.

Satan, and Fed are a question mark IMO. Niether was particularlly impressive last season. If the Pens lead the hunt next year (and I expect they will ), I look for another blockbuster trade, near, or at the deadline.

Danes,

Lots of teams, would have given him the BIG dollars this season. There is some crazy money being thrown around, and after this season ( playoffs in particular ) he doesn't/didn't need to pad his numbers.

I think Satan and Fedetenko will have much better years coming up.The Islanders were one of the lowest scoring teams for 3/4 of the season.Satan was a real good player before he went there.

Anybody know how much more cap room the Pens have and if they could sign anymore free agents?Jagr is still out there love him or hate him.

no I remember. I also remember the back to back cups before that happened. And a bunch of injuries, and a handful of hit posts in game 7 that would have kept them going had any went in. I know it could happen, but its not likely in my opinion. They were the best last year, and just got better.

Maybe I'm just bummed because I really wanted hossa to stay.

Riiiiight.

Ruutu wasn't really dirty, all he did was draw penalties and score rarely.

Luckily they only play Ruutu a few times and I doubt he's going to rake in 22 minutes of ice time there either.  I wouldn't worry about him too much.  Now Pittsburgh South (Tampa), that's a different story, with Roberts and Taters down there, they're going to play the Pens hard.

Well, his ceiling this year was probably about 8.5 mil.  But, assuming the Wings repeat and Hossa has a big year (much easier to do with the supporting cast Detroit provides), how could he not be worth 10 mil the following year, minimum?

We are here, actually Tippy has been real sick the past two weeks, and I have just been lurking.

I love how the Flyers are under the radar.  Not sure if they will be in the top four next year, but you can count on them making some waves in the East.

Should be fun, cant wait for the sh!t talking to start again.

Now maybe, this guy turns into a stud. Maybe not, I'd be more worried about next FA, and who we're gonna pickup.

Flyers aren't really making any waves, and thats not a bad thing. Excluding loosing Vinnie.

Hope tippy feels better!

Theres a glimpse of what he can do, He's a small speedy guy who is used to playing on bigger ice. I wouldn't doubt a line of dupuis-crosby-pesonen, all relatively small and fast.

God I can't wait.
