Status: online 		So now that the playoffs are over, everyone is done playing, I figured I'd start up the offseason post.  Gives the despondent hockey fans on here something to talk about.  So what's on your teams wish list?  Or should I say, what's your wishlist for your team.

As a pens fan, it's a pretty long list, seeing as how half of the team are free agents, Shero is going to be a busy man.  Initially, heading into the playoffs, I thought I'd rather see the Pens let Hossa walk and use that money to retain a few of the other players.  After the playoffs, not so much.  They need to make retaining Hossa for a few years priority #2.  Priority #1 is signing Fleury to an extension prior to July 1, the Pens don't need someone signing him to an offer sheet, just to drive his price up.  Should be an interesting one.  I'm anxious to hear Grendel's thoughts on the Sabres, they pretty much let all the offense walk after last season, wonder what goes on this year!

Status: offline 		Wow...not sure where to begin with the Sabres.  I think they have a strong enough team to compete.  Injuries and other health issues seem to plaque them year in and year out.  So I would begin by working on that. Get some seasoned vets here and there would not hurt.  Finally, learn to keep some people around!  Ruff does a great job with what he has, but they are still a few key playeres away from going over that hump.  Finding someone a fraction of the talent of Campbell would be nice!

For my beloved Flyers - just grow and learn from their past mistakes.  This is a franchise on the move - and quickly.  Love em or hatem em - they will be around again this coming season.

So, taking a rest from the coolest game on earth, you will see me around wearing my Flyers/or Sabres attire.  Win or lose, I am a FAN!  I gave away that jersey to the computer tech guy at work.  He complained abo9ut the same thing I did - the amount of fair-weather pittsburgh sports fans.  As he said - "you are either in or your out - if you are out - stay the F-out!"  "Don't come around when the trimmings look good.  I like that quote!"

The penz impressed me and they should be compettitive once again this year.  Not sure if they can match or surpass what they did in 07/08, because Hockey is a different animal.  I do believe they will compete well; to what extent is anyone's guess.  The same goes for the Wings as well (wanted to be fair about it).

Well, it is time to finish the first set of proofs on an article I have coming out.  Tomarrow I am joining a felow board member for some smallie fishing.  I will miss the Play-off Bantor Thread.  I really hope someone creates one next year; even if the penz do not make it in.

Status: offline 		For the Flyers I think their main focus should be on improving Defense.   I would love to see Brian Campbell come here(doubtful).  They are probably going to lose about six players to free agency, including Jason Smith and I think they should spend that money on a high end defenseman like Campbell.  Hatcher is probably gone, Sami Kapenen just retired so they will have plenty room under the cap. 
I dont think they have to worry too much about offense right now.  They have a lot of talent, plus Gagne's going to come back.  I know he is labeled as injury prone but I think he deserves one more year in this city.  He is a great defensive forward who can score 40+ goals.  Plus the Flyers have some #1 draft picks that have been tearing up the juniors and should be transitioning to the NHL in the next couple of years.

While they didn't win the cup, look at the learning experience this team went through this year.

Next season, Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and Talbot will all return. Only now, they can be called veterans.
They been through the experience. Their view of things will be different.

Signing Hossa would be awesome. However, I wouldn't sell the farm to do it.
The Penguins have room under the cap to sign some veterans. It's just deciding who to sign.
Convincing Orpik to stay and signing him would be huge. If you watched all season, you saw his play change.
He may have learned more than anybody else.
IMO, Malone is gone. Minnesota Wild.
Next season, look for Tim Brent, Connor James, Chris Minard, and Alex Goligoski to make an impact.
I'd bet the 'bangwagon' folks don't even know who they are. Next year they will.

Shoot, Mr. Kennedy may not even make the team next year.

Soooo, Mr. Grendel, not making the playoffs next year?

I'd be more surprised than Big Brown's trainer.

Oh I think they will make it it.  The last comment on my post was just a little poke.  If you read above that, I said they would compete.  Was just not sure how far they would go given how things work in the NHL.

Next is upgrading some defensemen, and hopefully the young guys will step it up another notch this year and the Grail will be ours.....mmmmmhahahaha

If we can sign hossa. I feel seriously bad for the Atlantic division.

Also, no one really mentioned it yet, but if malone goes...Whos gonna take his place? Staal? Possibly, but he's one hell of a nice threat on the 3rd line.
I havent caught up on my FA's being as my computer died at beginning of flyers series. Anyone with any ideas on who, or how to move players lemme know. That Sykora-malkin-malone line is Rediclious.

I'd like to sign dupuis, but I wouldn't toss too many deneros his way. He was a good fit for the quick transition coming with hossa, but give a team whole offseason to get used to linemates, and Dupuis drops to 3rd line. Maybe with staal?

I hope orpik stays, but he should be tripling his salary, being as he doubled his talent and level of play this season. His problems with terrien could play a factor.

I'll add on later.

Status: offline 		A couple of days ago yahoo sports reported that the pens offered Hossa a 7 year $50 million contract in which he had 72 hours to reply and if he accepted they in return would trade Malones rights [Ive read Columbus] has anyone else read this and where would Malkin and Staal's contract still fit under the salary cap? man I'd hate to see Malone go, but in retaining Hossa not sure that bad...Go Pens

Status: offline 		It will be intersting what types of contracts some of these guys will accept, to play with the type of talent in Pittsburgh.  Malone definitly raised his stock enormously in the playoffs.  I am hoping his Pitt connection and the prospects of this team will keep him here (wishful thinking probably).  But some of the others might accept a slightly lesser contract to play on lines with this type of talent.  A one or two year deal on this team may boost numbers enough to make them much more valuable than they would be playing somewhere else for the next few. 

Money wise the pens will have some big signings coming up in the next few years.  Other than Fleury and Hossa I don't think they should throw a ton of money out, long term.

Status: online 		Little something interesting.  I like it!  Philly did it last season and I see more teams following suit.  If the Pens, who do not have a draft pick until the 4th round or so, can trade Malone for a second or third rounder, I'll take it.  Better than losing him for nothing.

Status: online 		Whether Malone stays in the East or not, it will be of little consequence to the Penguins.  Malone is a decent player, that's about it.  He's 29, so it's not like he's a young prospect just starting to hit his stride.  He had his best season playing with Malkin and Sykora...  Good luck finding a Malkin elsewhere.  As much as I'd love to see Malone stay, I do like the guy, he really grew on me this season, but he's not worth the money he's going to get in free agency, which happens all too frequently anymore. (See Mark Parrish)

Status: offline 		Ehh malone will be tough with Columbus. Nash, I hear their trying to pick up Patrick Marleau, and Malone would be a big nasty scoring line.
But other than those 3 Columbus sucks. One line can't make a team.

I agree.  Having Malkin as your center can make anyones value go up.

Columbus made a deal before making the No. 6 overall pick. The Blue Jackets traded the 19th pick in the first round and their third-round pick, 67th overall, to Philadelphia for center R.J. Umberger and the Flyers' fourth-round choice, No. 118 overall. Umberger will be a free agent on July 1 after scoring a career-high 50 points during the regular season and leading the Flyers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 10 goals.

The Florida Panthers traded their captain, center Olli Jokinen, to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for defensemen Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton and the No. 49 pick in the Draft,

the Calgary Flames obtained center Michael Cammalleri and the No. 48 pick in this year's Draft from the Kings in exchange for Calgary's first-rounder, No. 17, and a second-round choice in 2009. The Kings then wheeled that pick, along with the No. 28 choice in the first round, to Anaheim for the No. 12 pick.

The Malkin BS can now stop, until the trade deadline.

Get used to Malkin trade rumors.  The Canadian rumor mongering media will never let that die.  It's too easy for them.  Malkin will be dogged by trade rumors as long as he is a penguin.  Every trade deadline and draft, Malkin rumors, guaranteed.

I heard that too, but cmon. Didn't he flee russia? I mean he'd make more money here in the long run and has a shot at winning the "Stanley Cup". Isin't that why EVERYONE plays hockey. For the love of the game and maybe hoist that cup one day?

Gonna need a backup for Fluery at some point and chances are that not to many of the players 4+ rounds in actually make it to the NHL.  I know there have been plenty of "steals" in the later rounds, but the numbers aren't in your favor when you are selected that far back.  The Pens are in an unfamiliar territory...  One where they actually have depth at pretty much all positions.  Sure they could use some upgrades here and there, but for the most part, they're in good shape.

Any thoughts on the Flyers trading Umberger?  Once they signed Carter long term, I guess you need to start making choices.  I for one, am glad to see him leave the Flyers.  One, he won't be torturing us 8 times this season, and two, no western PA kid should be forced to play with the Flyers...

Status: offline 		I am OK with RJ going to Columbus.  We need the cap space, and we already have a very young team with good prospects in Juniors and at the college level, plus lots of scoring power on the ice right now.
