Status: offline 		It was 67 in there on sunday...I bet if the weather keeps it will break 70 this week.  That should really jumpstart a big eastern migration.  If the weather holds this hot we will still be doing limits in October...

Look at it this way my report was a limit of walleyes in Port Clinton on saturday then we got a limit sunday out of walnut...200 miles apart.  We actually did them faster out of walnut on sunday...

The fish are moving..this weather is havin an impact...Keep it comin I say.

I ran a trolling plate on my boat for years and years.  My boat has a 5.0L V8 and the trolling plate was able to get it down to around 2mph in gear.  I would also drop out bags as well.  I put a 4 stroke 9.9 on my boat about 3 years ago and havent looked back. and the trolling plate became a thing of the past for me.

Yes they do work, however the fuel economy i get out of that 9.9, it basically pays for itself.

The boat I use is only a 19' Searay cuddy and has a 2.5L 4cyl. When I put my trolling plate down it gets me down to about 1.3-1.5 mph. Baits I use are Michigan Stinger Scorpians at my lowest trolling speed. I saw further up this thread 2.0mph or higher is good for small spoons, I have not tried harnesses. I was advised from a local bait shop to use stingers, so I've used them faithfully for 3 years now, have abox full of 'em and have never limited out. It sounds like if you run stingers do not run harnesses at the same time or vice versa, because of speed issues. Also sounds like I need to pick up a few harnesses.

BTW the only issues I have with using a trolling plate is replacing spark plugs every year.
The trolling plate does beat using 2, 5 gallon buckets tied to rope and hooked to your anchor cleats.

Status: offline 		You can run both stingers and harnesses at the same time... just be wary of your speed.  Remember that during turns, the outside lines will speed up and the inside lines will slow down -- pay attention when you get hits like this as it can be a good indicator of what type of speed the fish are reacting better to.  Many times I'll rotate my set-up to see what's working best... for instance, I'll have one dipsy set to 3.5 out 150 with a harness on it and on the other side of the boat, I'll run another dipsey set to 3.5 out 150 with a stinger.  Then play with your speeds or zig zag turns and you'll find out which ones the fish are taking more to.  Then on the other dipseys just run the opposite of your pattern... so the side with the harness down deeper has a stinger above it and vice versa.

Status: offline 		I just put an 18 HP 2 stroke on my 24 ft thompson so its exactly the opposite this year . I have a hard time going over 2.3 MPH now ! unlike last year I had to watch the speed with the 3.7 Liter 4 Cyl Mercruiser W/ 4BBL carb ouch actually its really a 460 ford cut in half @ 230 CI ... I do not like carboned up plugs out on the pond due to the exhaust being under the water ; you'd have to open er up once in a while before ... which is an option I can't afford . I trolled 6 hours on 5 gallon of gas with the kicker .

Status: offline 		If you're going to fish Erie for walleye, you should, IMO, be prepared with a variety of baits.  You never know when one will outproduce another.  Some of my personal favorites are as follow:

Cranks:  Reef Runners DD and Ripsticks, Storm thundersticks, Jimmy Lure, bombers to name a few...fire tiger seems to be the hottest color there for me.

Worm Harnesses:  I make my own, but harnesses outproduce all other lures for walleye in the central to eastern basin for me.  I know the guys out west swear by the cranks and spoons.  I say its simply because its less work running them and less mess if you're using live crawlers, so thats pretty much all they use. Hot colors are watermelon, kevorkian/purple/pink, orange crush and black/purple combinations.

Spoons:  There is a lot of talk out there about whos spoons are the best...IMO, spoons are spoons, yes some are made with better quality than others, but they will ALL produce fish.  I personally do not like running the small 2 1/2 inchers.  I prefer anything 3" to 4 1/2"  Watermelon with copper back being my most fish producing color.

IMO overall opinion, if you are prepared with these 3 types of lures for Erie walleye fishing especially when the fish are on hot, you should have no problem picking up tickets.  However, some days are so slow that you're lucky to get a few fish on any of the above.  Also, how you fish, where you fish and when you fish play bigger factors than the lures if you ask me.  Sometimes you need to change up your speed, direction or location.  You may also want to try changing your methods on very slow days.....Versatility and persistance are the main keys when it comes to any type of fishing if you ask me....Hope all this helps...Tight Lines!

Cranks my favorite of all time is the orignal deep storm thunderstick in gold with orange back.

Spoons are not spoons.  Spoons like harnesses can be made with a much more quality finish and more distinct wobble at lower speeds, which is necessary for walleye.  Spoons you will find none too many better than Fishlander, DreamWeaver, Silverstreak, Wolverine, and Yeck.

Harneses...I dont want to toot my horn, but I think I got the best worm harnesses blades made...lol

Status: offline 		Bottom line is that any spoon will catch fish on any given day, regardless of quality, make or color.  I once knew an old gentleman who used to kill fish on a homemade spoon made literally from a real silver spoon!  I agree however, that certain manufacturers have better finishes that last longer and different shapes to create a different wobble.  You're dealing with a muskie guy here who has seen every lure under the sun....I've also seen monsters caught on $5 lures as well as $25 lures.  Anyone can say whatever they want about selling a product, but the KEY is still persistance and versatility.  What kind of lures one uses is simply personal preference and what has been most successful for him/her.

Hello there Mr. Elephanthead!  I'm getting ready to put those Reef Runners and Storms to the test here real soon!  How have you been?

Status: online 		IF I could find a lure that worked better than a worm harness does in the waters of Lake Erie i would use it exclusivly and promote it to its fullest capability.

You will never find one that works better if you keep forking over $ for worms and making the boat a mess!!

I have PLUGS that you can not tell what manufacturer they are let alone color from being eaten so much.

My boat isnt happy unless its coverd in worm dirt and walleye blood...and neither am i...

Thats good you have all those plugs...anytime any1 wants to fish a section of water and run plugs against meat let me know!

Status: offline 		Stinger spoons have garbage paint job, they chip and loose there paint like no lure I ever seen before. Dreamweavers spoons are much better  lets start a thread with Dreamweaver vs Worms. I never really noticed much difference in colors of worm harnesses, its still the worm they want imo

Status: offline 		I mentioned dream weavers above...If you still run stingers with all the other QUALITY spoon companies out there like Dreamweaver, Wolverine, and Fishlander (who are all very competitively priced with stinger and the paint stays on...) you are kinda nuts.

Deerslayir.  Ive never found another bait that can out produce my harnesses.  Like i said before i dont have a problem with spoons, or getting spoons since i am a pro-staff member with Fishlander I just flat out do better with worms day in and day out...Ive had alot of good days with spoons in the mix of things, but consistantly load up with more walleyes in a faster period of time with the harnesses.

If you ever see me down at walnut come up to me and ask for a fishlander spoon...Ill give you one to try out, they are great products.

Not sure if this has been asked before.  How do you connect your harnesses to your line.  I really like the shorted style you have.  I tie mine on about 3' or so line, so there is a leader that I connect to a swivel on my line. 

Do you attach yours to another leader of mono?  Do you use a swivel of anysort to stop the twist? 

I keep my longer ones wrapped around a piece of piping insulation, but they always seem to come unwound at some point.  Also taking the longer leaders off when it is dark or when I am too busy/lazy to wrap them up, just leads to a mess the next time I am out.  Your approach seems like a much less messy way of doing things, and you seem to have as much success as those using the longer leader method.

Status: offline 		I run long leaders and wrap them up on a pool noodle with a golf tee...very nicely organized

My harnesses are my leaders.  I tie them up in 6ft lengths....add another 8" for the snubber and they are about 7ft off the dipsy.  Run ball bearing swivles off of the snubber.  Good for resisting twist with harnesses and spoons.

Status: offline 		Why put the swivel at the diver? Seems like a waste of space ????? I run my 20# fluro leader off my jet / dipsy to a high quality ball bearing swivel . I tie a loop at the end of all harnesses that are 12" long . This way you can quickly change colors if needed . I store approximately 250 harnesses 50 different patterns on two 12" x 36" removable pieces of foam located in the gun wale of the boat.I take them out of the weather after each outing to prevent sun damage to my fluoro / tarnishing my blades on the harness.

As for the leader on the dipsy (same length of the rod you are using for netting purposes) ; simply break your rod down & wrap around your reel keeping the diver close to the reel for support and a harness on ( ready to fish for next time) the hooks from the harness are buried in the butt of each pole. I can transition from trolling eyes to perch'n in about 10 minutes with 6-8 poles & planers out this way . Everything broken down & stowed in the cuddy.

Cant miss me really....lol...but you have to be an early riser to catch me...

No i have a nice 8 Pole rocket launcher on the roof of my boat that i built out of stainless tubing and clamp on stainless rod holders.  It looks pretty good and gets your unused rods up and outa the way.  Kind of a must on a hard top.

My trophy has a real short back deck with the I/O so it is nice to ulilized the roof space for something.  My next boat is probaly going to be an 25-27' outboard just because of the additional cockpit size for fishing room.

Status: offline 		Sorry I missed the Q Porktown....I just run about a 4 foot leader off my dipsy and use a ball bearing swivel at the end of it that I attach the harness to.  Makes for quick and easy changing too.  Viirtually no line twist whatsoever.  When I'm done for the day, I put a rubber band on the end of the lead line on swivel thats on the dipsy and wrapt the whole thing around the dipsy itself then stretch the band around which makes for neat and easy clean-up and ready to use next trip.  Tight Lines.
