flyfisherman -> THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/11/2008 10:39:02 PM)

Hey guys....I was wondering what the deal is with all of these posts about guys saying that they are spotting and catching very large numbers of steelhead.......Call me crazy, but it seems a little too late to still be getting huge runs. Im sure that you will have the occasional stray, but hundreds!!! COME ON NOW.... what do you fishermen think about this

Drop backs. The season started late and i guess it is gonna run a little late. Fishon

spoonchucker -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/11/2008 11:52:48 PM)

There aren't thousands, but no doubt hundreds in a few streams. This time of year almost all will be found in a handful of prefered pools. Most will be empty, but a few will be loaded ( relatively ). Just have to figure out which ones. Even those will be gone (most of them) in the next week, or two.

Steelhead come and go fast. Somebody might go to a smaller stream like 20 or 16 and find piles of fish and then in a day or two they are gone. You just cant be sure that they are there. People get all whiney when they read a good report and then they show up later and all the fish are gone. Fish move, thats one of the things that makes this whole thing so exciting.

They are probably catching large numbers of 4 inch steelhead

mkin183 -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/12/2008 9:08:03 PM)

Yeah really tippy-toe. Smolts dont count as steelhead and people should leave them alone because they are stocked and are very fragile.

Stillhead -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/13/2008 6:31:56 AM)

If you need the reports page to base your trips on, stay home April through October and then we won't have to worry about all the whining going on.  Must be a bunch of flyers fans driving up and getting skunked lately.

bigbear9791 -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/13/2008 7:46:22 AM)

i love fishing drop backs
they are stacked and hungry, great way to get newbies into fishing
so i take my son and girlfriend.....oh yea it isn't cold like normal steelie fishing so they don't whine as much as some people on this board :)

flyfisherman -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/13/2008 11:43:28 AM)

Im not a whiner....I just see people making the posts of having an awsome day in May....Im glad that they did have a great day but when I walk the streams I dont see anything! I just wish I knew the secret!!!

spoonchucker -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/13/2008 11:56:37 AM)

fly,

There really is no secret, though there are a few holes on Elk that seem to attract (hold) dropbacks more than others. The main thing is to cover a LOT of water, forget the upper reaches (the fish are dropping back), and the very lower reaches ( the fish are dropping back, and  don't hang around long once they get that low ). Look for pools with cooler water flowing into them.

Someone posted that reports of fish in 20 mile were bogus. They MIGHT be, but the poster could not know by the water ( Rt5- the lake ) he said was fishless. If there are any remaining fish in 20 ( not saying there is ), they would not likely be found below Rt. 5.

Dream Catcher -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/13/2008 12:09:45 PM)

Secret to finding Steel in tribs Mid May-August

1) Live on an Erie Trib
2) Spend every day walking the streams
3) Catch steel off shore or start a hatchery & transplant into stream
4) Reverse global warming
5) Ask Hillary to fix the problem when she is president
6) Get really intoxicated at trout run & pretend you are on Elk Creek
7) Petition PA to dredge a stream channel out into lake
8) Throw bags of ice into streams each night before you go to bed

Hope that helps

Flyers fans don't get skunked....if they are not biting we just scare them out of the water....

Loomis -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/15/2008 6:01:58 PM)

just like the Flyers are gonna get scared out of the series tonight.

carpin05 -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/15/2008 7:39:39 PM)

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!

Livinfishin -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/15/2008 7:52:59 PM)

I noticed on the report that is being referenced here that the fisherman fished upstream of Rt 20.  I thought 20 mile was posted from 20 to the state line?

spoonchucker -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/15/2008 11:54:29 PM)

"I thought 20 mile was posted from 20 to the state line?"

Nope, only for a hundred yards ( at most ) upstream.

S-10 -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/16/2008 4:12:05 AM)

I think your off by a zero. It's posted from rt-5 south for about a half mile.

Livinfishin -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/16/2008 8:49:50 AM)

He is talking about upstream of Rt 20

clamshell -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/16/2008 8:23:00 PM)

we fished it-explored- yesterday.  Met a couple of different landowners along 20 mile.  Great people.  We covered most of the creek from several miles inside NY to the lake.  Gin clear conditions.  Saw a couple of scarred-up, half dead steelies, that was it.  A couple of days ago, saw two guys, bvelieve they were brothers from down "burg way-from their conversations.  Ugly sticks, mooch reels, mono.  Now there's some fisherman for ya!!  Looked like they were practicing the ol' lift-rip on suckers.

Loomis -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/17/2008 2:52:56 PM)

20 mile above rt. 20 sux.

jeeters -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/17/2008 8:07:04 PM)

Spoon pretty much said it all, they are not coming in they are going out.If I told you the numbers i have landed in the last month most would say I was stretching the truth. All I'm going to say is if you can find a pod of dropbacks that have not been fished over they will eat, but you have to know how to fish low and clear and spooky steelies.

heinzhouse01 -> RE: THE STEELHEAD ARE COMMING IN BY THE MILLIONS (5/18/2008 10:47:50 AM)

Folks,

Drop backs make liars out of saints.  Today, a hole has 100 steel in it, you catch them, take a freind tomorrow only to find a hole with nothing in it.  It happens all the time until the fish are finally back out in the lake.
