deetz4352 -> Shades Beach Boat Launch (5/9/2008 6:02:12 PM)

Managed to get a look at the launch on thursday after work. They had just finished up dredging the marina about 5 pm. All the piers were in. Unfortunatly the space between the ramps is very narrow and this guys 21 footer left no room for another boat to put in or out. I have a 16 footer that will leave enough space for another 16 footer but that still will be a tight fit.Who ever designed the marina should have put more thought into the space used. Very poor layout. Also the ramp slope is too shallow , the piers are too high and did i mention its too narrow. Saw one guy there using the ramps after a day of fishing. He just about had all 4 tires of his truck in the water before the boat would float off the trailer. I was truly dissapointed with all of it . Its going to be hazzardous on those ramps. Someone is going to get run over or hurt badly if your in a hurry. So please be carefull when backing up there and have some patients. If your not experienced please practice before going to the Shades Beach boat launch. Looks like prep work is going to be up at the entrance to the launch area near the parking lot. No room down in at the launch for that. Im wondering how much congestion the new launch is going to have. We shall see this summer. I drive by almost every day going home to north east so if anyone wants an update ill be happy to reply.

When I was up that way on the 3rd, I got a look at the launch facility from the water, looking in through the opening in the break wall. It seemed to me like the protected area is way too small. It looked like there'd be barely enough room to turn around in there. And I wondered about boats waiting to use the ramp. Seemed to me they'd have to wait outside the protected area. Maybe it was just the impression I got from the location I was viewing, but it looked like a disappointment to me also. Pennsylvania seems to have a hard time getting it right when it comes to launch ramps / facilities.
