I can't think of a better mothers day afternoon than one spent browsing Gander Mountain.

I'm guessing you're looking for some stuff other than fishing...Presque Isle is really cool to just drive out there..the whole way around the horn is around 15-16 miles...you can stop at a beach, get out take a walk....whatever...I don't think the zoo is open yet, but I might be wrong. The millcreek mall is, of course, there...you could go down to Dobbins Landing(foot of peach st. on the bay) you can walk around, look at the boats, convention center, brig Niagara is there, get a drink at Smugglers Wharf or  at Rumrunners.  I don't know if the Maritime Museum will be open but it is in the library which is right next to Dobbins Landing.  You could take the water taxi across from Dobbins to PI Bay (not sure if the taxi is running yet)...or you could take a sightseeing boat ride on the  Lady Kate, I believe he leaves from Perry's Monument on Presque Isle. Here's his site...http://www.piboattours.com/...or if you're really adventurous...book a fishing charter for the afternoon.  Lots of great guys listed under Lake Charters on this site.
good luck

MAT,
If your mother likes wine, I would recommend the wine tour of the Erie area.  Some of the wineries are really nice.  But it can get expensive.  The last time I went I found something I liked at each of the 6 we went to.  And I rarely drink!  But they are neat and infomative.  Dinner at the great Italian resturant, that is down town  (can't remember the name,  too much wine) would really cap off a day.

Just wanted to mention that most of the ideas for the waterfront venues are still closed, the water taxi , Lady Kate and smugglers were still closed as of fri evening. I think the things on the water that are open are some of the fishing charters and they are not all operating yet, was out on the Edward John on Fri night and noticed all of this, Presquisle has a real nice list made out w/great ideas
