Is the Yough becoming wadeable ?  I know there is a depth website out there, I just never bookmark it.... duh ?

SmallieKiller -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/7/2008 9:10:44 AM)

First off, I would say yes.  The Yough is around 4 in Sutersville and that's pretty much the normal flow.

Secondly, here's the link!

Her is another link for you.

I waded the Yough Tuesday night and had a terrific time.  It is still running a little fast.  If your over 40 a staff can be a big help.  The meat hunters have not been able to pull in most of the bigger trout so there is still alot of big trout to be had.  I caught another huge brown last nite that had a tag in it, spaghetti colored with black writing.  Released it.  I became confused on how to collect the tag without harvesting the fish.  Can you just clip the tag off to collect on it or do you need the entire fish?  I let it go, with the tag.  These browns fight like carp, once hooked they head for the bottom of the hole.  I was using the 4wt but I feel the 7wt is a better rig for the Yough, especially for the stage it was at last nite.

Was at the Yough on Sunday around Connellsville PA. We normally fish the river when the gauge is showing around 900 cfs to 1500 cfs. It was at 3200 cfs on Sunday. Places that I normally could fish were not accessable!! You do need a wading staff for sure. The water was flowing so good I was having a hard time even with cleats on my wading shoes crossing the river. Give it a couple of weeks. Water around Connellsville is still pretty cold. No smallies yet!

aranbp -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/7/2008 10:07:07 PM)

Smallhook,  If I remember right you can just pull it off using gentle but steady pressure.

Puffy -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/8/2008 10:35:51 AM)

So if the "forecast" is correct on the chart above, I'm assuming it's going back to unfishable again right ?

martyweir -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/8/2008 11:01:43 AM)

I fished yesterday pm from 2-4pm in West Newton.  Stream WAS wadable and water was nice and clear, but it's gonna rise now.  I always start out smallmouth fishing down there, but end up wading into bucket loads of trout, and can't help casting at them.  tons of large rainbows hugging the bottom, and I couldn't get them to look at anything I threw.  Wooly buggers, nymphs, wet, dry, you name it I threw it...  Even threw berkley PB earthworms.  EL SKUNKO!!!  Another frustrating day on the river!  Anybody know what bugs are in the water down there now?  No hatches that I could see.

BTW, I did see one nice smally12" +  and one 6-8".  I saw one nice sized fish hanging around a spawning bed near shore.  He took my wildeye, but I missed on the hookset - I think he was defending his bed, not feeding...  Spawn is on it seems.

71gto -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/8/2008 11:19:58 AM)

As of 15 minutes ago which is now 11:18 AM on the 8th, the Yough is fishable and still looking great! I will be there shortly!

shemanese -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/8/2008 11:32:55 AM)

Try the shiny spoon type lures or the big bows. i.e Hus, Phoebe etc.

Ax -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/8/2008 11:37:21 AM)

Do you ever work 71GTO? LOL

smallhook -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/8/2008 12:02:49 PM)

Looks good for tonight, Thursday.  It will be the last time it will be wadable till next week sometime.   Looks like it will be at seven feet tomorrow nite.  The gauge in the above post will continue to update itself even in this post.

harryape5 -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/8/2008 1:45:30 PM)

Will be there by 2:30 today Light rain but wind from the west.

TJBKR01 -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/9/2008 9:31:56 AM)

Are these areas of the Yough you are referring to above fly fish only? Or is this just everyones perference?

Just what some guys do.  Smithon and west newton are anything goes.

smallhook -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/9/2008 2:18:05 PM)

Wow, the river still looks good for fishing this Friday night at still under 5 feet at Sutersville.  Should be good tomorrow in the morning for a little fishing from a kayak.

71gto -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/9/2008 3:29:37 PM)

Careful guys, don't be mislead about fishing the Yough at Smithton. Remember the Sutersville gauge is down river from Smithton, you need to check the Connellsville gauge. It is showing the river up almost a foot today.

smallhook -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/10/2008 7:05:20 PM)

Fishing was great Friday night and was there was no problem wading.  Sutersville is nine miles downstream from Smithton.  Connelsville is 20 miles upstream. Watch them both for figuring this stuff out.

This is the site I use.

bubba-jet -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/10/2008 11:04:08 PM)

Looks like Jacobs Creek is really high then.

71gto -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/11/2008 5:57:37 AM)

You got that right Bubba-Jet! No gauge on Jacobs Creek.

Estimated -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/13/2008 2:23:11 AM)

You can wade some spots in Smithton when the guage is 6.1 in sutersville

boli -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/13/2008 4:15:17 PM)

what is a good level for around ohiopyle? trying to fully understand reading the different gauges.

smallhook -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/13/2008 9:25:01 PM)

Since I don't fish that area much I'm not sure how to read this gauge:

http://newweb.erh.noaa.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=pbz&gage=oplp1&view=1,1,1,1,1,1&toggles=10,7,8,2,9,15,6&type=0

[image]http://newweb.erh.noaa.gov/images/ahps2/hydrographs/oplp1_hg.png[/image]

Or this one:

http://newweb.erh.noaa.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=ctp&gage=cnfp1&view=1,1,1,1,1,1&toggles=10,7,8,2,9,15,6&type=0

Estimated -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/14/2008 1:49:46 AM)

Ya it's fast for sure i use a life vest in water over 5.0

Puffy -> RE: Yough wadeable (5/15/2008 8:01:59 AM)

Haven't seen predictions for this weekend, but it can't be good.
