fishON4Me -> Rapala Lure Help (5/6/2008 7:50:32 PM)

What color, size, and type of Rapala lures work best for shore fishing for Bass? I usually fish the south pier and/or bayfront areas. Any and all help is appreciated.

I do really well on the floating rapalas, minnow raps and some on the x raps. I like the size 9 anytime fishing in Erie. The bigger bass in Erie seem to like the bigger lures like the size 9. When I fish the yough river I like some of the smaller sizes. Color depends on the water I think. I like the more natural colors for clear water and the brighter colors for murky water. I do about 90% of my artificial lure fishing with Rapalas and do pretty well on them.

You have to experiment a little to see what they want ? I've caught bass on the larger jointed ones as well as  plugs in the 1-1.5" range also. Big bass eat big baits, but the opposite is true some times too, I've caught big bass on small plugs.A four to 5 inch bait is a good starting point, but they will all take fish.

Crawfish pattern Shad Raps, deep and shallow are my favorites for PI.  Others work ok too though.

I use F-9, J-9, and Husky Jerks.

I've had good luck with size 5 and 7 shallow shad raps in silver and perch patterns.  I've also caught quite a lot of bass on fat raps, original floating minnows, and jointed minnows in the same patterns.  I use a size 9, 11 or 13 in the minnow styles.

I like the jointed perch pattern, but I bet it's the motion and noise that gets their attention more than anything.

for smallmouth on inland lakes, i always preferred s5, s7 and s9 along with the chrome version.  for bigmouths, s9 and s11.  also would use the smaller countdown models in august and september, when the fish were schooling on the bars.  (i use rapalas so much for so many years that i used to give them away as gifts.  just love those plugs).
