I don't know 'bout them Pens.Might beat Philly, might not.I just would actually like to see a fight for once in the playoffs, not a glove smelling contest.Still want them to win.

LABIO,duud

ShutUpNFish -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/7/2008 5:34:14 PM)

IMO, "real" hockey is not about fights.  Although we sometimes like to see a good hockey fight, it was never really condoned or supported until th NHL came along.  I'm just glad we've got "The Rock"!

gobyking -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/7/2008 6:05:40 PM)

IMO,everyone should read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighting_in_hockey which doesn't support you claim ShutUpNFish. Also, anyone can type anything they want into a wikipedia search(hence the EDIT in the lower right of every chapter) even though it is well written. But since I'm not a "real" hockey fan in your opinion, you win.I'll go watch another sport, maybe tennis because there isn't any violence in it.And Laraque wouldn't have a job if he wasn't a goon.

ShutUpNFish -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 6:15:58 AM)

Not a win/lose situation...

It was just my opinion...and in MY opinion, I think fighting takes away from the game.  I was not looking for a debate or trying to put anyone down.  Just stating MY opinion.  You have your own and I respect that.  And fighting in hockey DID in fact originate in North America...so did hockey pretty much.  Don't go watch another sport, the Pens need your support!  Lets GO Pens!

John 3:16 -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 9:05:25 AM)

Gotta have a brawl or two.  This is for the Conference championship.  To me, the fights show they actually care

SmallieKiller -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 10:24:35 AM)

Fighting in hockey used to be a way of "policing" the game.  Now it's merely a circus side-show for the fans.  Too few fights anymore actually tie into the root of fighting in the game.  When Gary Roberts beat down Ben Eager, that was for the uncalled elbow on Laraque.  The Ref didn't call it, but Gary took it upon himself to take Eager to task for it.

Laraque's fights are too coreographed.  He can throw for sure, but all these players now that fight just to get the crowd into it are kind of missing the point.

JEB -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 11:16:16 AM)

The statement that fighting takes away from the game is true somewhat, you have kid and adult leagues where their is no checking  and no fighting, they game is played at its purist form there. BUT, in professional hockey, fighting is part of the game. The only way to eliminate it is too police the game more heavily, every cheap shot should be called, make the 2 min penalties like a major, you could score as many times as possible. More suspensions, if you get ejected, your team plays down a man like soccer does.(I know there are more soccer players on the field than in hockey), but these things might end fighting, it wouldn't be worth it for a team to risk it
Personally, I think it makes the game more interesting, as a former player I've been in a few. The thing I hate is when someone gets their clock cleaned by a good LEGAL check and they want to fight. Keep your head up when comming through center ice and that won't happen. If you get nailed by a good check, suck it up and try to return the favor, don't start a fight.

Just my thoughts !!!

Hockey was invented in North America by the native indian tribes, they called they game "Hogee", we translated that into Hockey. It was played with tree branches and on land at first.Games would take place between whole tribes and lasted for days.  I did an apllied summary paper in college on the history of hockey.

Exactly, this furthers my point.  The true reason for fighting is really lost on these kids.

Now if it's a dirty hit, someone needs a beat down....

spoonchucker -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 12:07:21 PM)

Don't know where it started, but we played alot of farmpond hockey, as an EXCUSE to beat the h@ll out of each other. Lot footbal too. No flags, or tags involved.

doubletaper -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 1:10:51 PM)

JEB, right on. fighting for the right reason, as you stated, is a part of hockey. if they're going to avoid checking, fighting and have enough ref's to call every penalty they might as well call it figure skating with a stick!!!

dealinsteel -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 1:36:21 PM)

I think it's difficult as a spectator to try to say what guys should or shouldn't do one the ice.  I've played sports my whole life and one thing that no one ever brings up is the amount of talking going on in the game.  Jagr and Rutuu talked the whole series, and it's because of the history involving the two.  It's tough to just say that's unnecessary fighting because there's alot more to it than the fight....  It could go back years, or it could just be a few games old, but when you have all the intentions in the world to win a Stanley Cup, the emotions can surely dictate how a game unfolds.  How do you think silly Philly got the nickname the Broadstreet Bullies??  this isn't something that just started this year mind you!!!

IUP30 -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 2:47:38 PM)

I love how people condemn fighting in hockey because they don't understand what it's about.  Think about it, hockey is a sport with some of the most purest of human emotions and connections to our past.  You put these guys who are basically a family in an enclosed area (almost like a cage if you can let your imagination go) and it's a battle against the other 'family' to win/survive.  Most other sports have a boundary where a player can't be touched and is "out of bounds" and the play stops.  Hockey is not like that - when you're on the ice it can almost be compared to being in the Roman Colisseum... no place to go but play and defend your most important people.

Fighting, as Smallie said, is more about policing the game and protecting the players that matter most to the team.  Most of the guys out there fighting are defending one of their own - just like any one of you would do if someone was attacking your family.

I'd rather have these guys drop the gloves any day rather than use the deadly weapon they have in their hands to even the score.

I've been a part of many different sports teams but none that I've experienced have the dynamic and chemistry of a hockey team.  Your teammates are literally your brothers and in the heat of a game with emotions boiling, you'd do whatever to protect your guys.  If you've never been part of a hockey team, playing for something actually meaningful, you'd never understand and it's even harder to explain.

Fighting is part of the game, like it or not.

well said

gobyking -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 5:06:40 PM)

I should have said one game this series will get out of hand like many meetings between the two teams usually do.Didn't want this to run of into a morality contest, everyone has opinions on this subject, just like religion and politics, which other people have a hard time changing.Back to the original subject,go Pens.

ShutUpNFish -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/8/2008 6:34:05 PM)

JEB,

This statement says it all...well said.

"Personally, I think it makes the game more interesting, as a former player I've been in a few. The thing I hate is when someone gets their clock cleaned by a good LEGAL check and they want to fight. I played soccer, basketball, football and league hockey growing up.  I sure do know about team unity.  Its one of the elements thats differentiates good teams from great ones.  It is also one of the elements that kids lack today along with good old fashioned competetive desire and hunger to win.

How many of you remember watching the 1980 USA hockey team?  A bunch of kids, a family, with a whole lot of desire to win!

You got it.  You dont let someone else cheap shot a teammate.  Look at how Whitney stood up for Crosby in the Ottawa game.  Whitney is no brawler, but he did what was right.

To the guy who mentioned glove smelling contests:  Did you ever smell a glove?  You might be better off fighting the guy!

I hear that, its an aweful, lingering smell. Not very pleasant at all!

The Pens suck balls from the backside and Sid is the best at it eve jenny told me....that is all

Let me put my fishing gloves in their face for a minute, or so. I guarantee they miss at least two games.

SmallieKiller -> RE: Lets go Penguins! (5/12/2008 10:06:31 PM)

There is no more foul smelling peice of equipment than the hockey glove...  We used to call the smell Doritos.  You can't rid of it.
