Thsi is a general question I have guys! I have always fished for Smallmouth using a floating fly line. Some of the patterns that I throw, I am wondering whether I should be throwing a sinking line? IE Clouser Crayfish, Clouser Minnows, etc. We fish the Yough River with our fly rods. What are the pros and cons of fishing with a sinking fly line? I have never done it before! Just looking for help. Do not want to invest in a sinking line if it is not worth it! By the way I have used a sink tip leader before on the Yough River. Should I just continue to do that. Any help on this matter would greatly be appreciated! Thanks guys.

Unless you're going real deep I'd continue as you are.  On Lake Erie and some places on the Allegheny I'd suggest a sinking line but for the most part you'll be down far enough with the weighted fly, and the sink tip leader if you need it to get down more rapidly.

Sinking lines are pretty tough to cast and get little use unless fishing deep water. Sticking w your sink tip leader or adding weight to your leader would be your best bet.  Casting a full sinking line will drive most freshwater fisherman nuts, or atleast it did me.  I never had anymore luck with the sinking line than just a leader with weight and that was fishing the allegheny river.  My 2 cents....

If your just stripping a sinking line is good. If you start trying to dead drift nymphs your gonna have problems. At different levels in the water column the water moves at different speeds which will throw your flies all over the place.

Check out a sink tip change out system. I think cortland makes one. Be better then a sinking line.

I use a 5 foot piece of sinking line right before my leader.  You need to shorten up your leader when running a sinkin head tho.

If you have the option it's great tohavea floating line and a sink tip line. The sink tip allows you not only to fish deeper water but also to use specialized approaches like using a Dahlberg Diver down low.

Guys, thanks for all the suggestions! I was at the Yough River on Sunday. Flow was really high and fast. Water was crystal clear! I just stripped clousers for about 2 1/2 hours with no luck! Went behind some of the islands to get out of the major current and still no luck. Was fishing real deep. Water still seemed cold to me!

Remember to somtimes just drift the Clouser with just the occasional twitch. I never thought that would work but once I started doin it I realized I got more bites that way!

I just use a floating line in most applications, but I do have some sinking line sections that I use as a 5 or 6 foot section in front of my floating line. I only do this once in a while when I want to get a little deeper. Just add it in front of your tie in or leader loop connector then add your leader. I usually just run straight mono and only use a tapered leader when fishing drys. If your just throwing & drifting nymphs I see no need to turn the fly over, thats why I use staright mono in those situations.

No problem, it works pretty good at the river, gives you a little more depth while reduces you snags.
