Yep.

The info. I have was from an employee of the fish commission, I won't say his name because he didn't formally introduce himself to me.  It has nothing to do with the PAFBC either.  The federal ban on interstate transport of fish will halt the hybrid striper stocking program. He didn't say forever, but if things stay the way they are now, they aren't allowed to trade fish with Georgia? to get the hybrid fingerlings.  Basically he said we'll just have to wait and see, but he didn't sound very optimistic either.

North,

The PF&BC trades Walleyes to other states for hybrids. The current USDA ban on interstate transportation of live fish prevents this. That is not to say that they will NEVER stock again. But untill the USDA drops, or eases the rules, or they find or develope a source in Penna. they have no fish to stock.

From the reply I got from the fish comission their looking at their options, can't believe the fed's won't allow states some leeway on the transporting of live fish, hopefully their biologists will figure out how to cross some Raystown stripers with some whites and we won't have to rely on other states. I know money is an issue but I'd be more than willing to pay for a warmwater stamp, they put enough into the trout programs, don't get me wrong I flyfish for trout just would like to see more done for the warmwater fisherys in the state. Personally I'd like to see wipers stocked in the middle and upper Allegheny I know there is lots of white bass in the river around Kinzua and if they are doing ok why won't the wipers? Unless they figure they'd eat all the forage and disrupt the existing species.

  Kevin,

I think Timmy works on Sat. He didn't get to fish the tournament the other day. I just looked at the camera of Greg & his outing of this evening. Man did they catch some big fat bass, a good size cat & some smaller birds. Matt hit a farm pond & filled up a big bowl of Bluegill fillets. He said he was reelin in a gill & a monster bass smacked it, but during a good fight it broke his line. Give me a call if you wanna get out on Sat.

Saturday night we fished till 2 am and didn't land a fish.  I got my permit in the mail Saturday for my cast net and we finally figured out how to cast a 16 foot diameter net.  Last night we landed seven fish, five stripers and two nice largemouth, got my line broke once, got a hook bent straight once, and flat out missed six other ones before 1 am.  It was our best night by far.  Has anyone tried using the big gizzard shad for stripers.  I put one on for ten minutes and it was too much of a pain keeping it from swimming around the boat so I took it off.
P.S.  off the topic, does anyone know if there are any extra regulations for lake erie boating.  Like, do I need a marine radio or is it just probably a good idea.  I have a 16 foot boat.

I too had a rough night Saturday.  Landed one small smallmouth and had 3 hook ups that quickly got off.  Was your success on Sunday all on live bait???  Were any of the 5 stripers small?  I have been talking to some guys down there that have been chasing the hybrids for a lot longer than me, and they are claiming to have caught more smaller fish than ever this year.  Most of them were fishing bait.  Hopefully this means we have a few good years to look forward to!  I myself have never fished bait and only ever got one less than 20 inches.  Wish I was there right now!

  Startinout,

for the Gizzard Shad try using a slip sinker with a 2'-3' stop after the top water action comes to a end. The Elewifes won't stay close to shore as long this time of year. The Stripers will follow them into deeper water & keep feeding. Most of the guys give up after the top water action is over. Try fishing  fast drop offs close to shore. The L/M were hittin purdy good for us tonight & Timmy had a good Bird take him into a deep water snag.

  Good Luck, Crappy

Keep a close eye on your honey pot, Chris. Saw a very large bear in your neighborhood the other morning. Durn near hit him coming around the bend.

Mike,  thanks for the heads up . That bear shows up every year. Last year he was sleepin in the neighbors front yard . The year before he was next to my van at Timbos, next to the sportsmans club. I followed him for awhile, Timbo ran in his house. I was tryin to call him, come here pouch, hear pouchy pouchie then he started to come towards me on the rd., then I said oh poop to myself. He went into the woods & took a poop against a tree. He killed all my buddies rabbits one year also. The kids have seen him when waitin for the school bus. He is a big one. Seems they like to try & get into sliding glass doors alot, nose smears on the glass give them away.

Mick, yes they were all on live bait.  Not that we didn't try every go-to striper lure we had, at least for the first hour.  And also, as a matter of fact, we caught two 14 inch stripers.  We also caught a 14 incher last week, so yeah, hopefully the future will be alright.  Thanks crappie about the gizzard shad.  I'll have to try it.  One interesting thing of note, at least for myself, is that we marked a TON of something big real close to the bottom on our way back to the launch that I've never seen in that area all year.  So I think we'll be trying a little jigging the next time it's like that, if it ever is.

My youngest son, Greg caught his biggest L/M this eve on a 5' ultralight, 4 lb test using a spinner bait. It was prob. 8 lbs. Spoony, Matt almost hit a bear 3 doors up about 9:00 this eve. Startinout, I'll catch more with a Bluegill than shad.

Crappie,
Do you use the big (7-8") gizzard shad? Have you had success with those on the bottom?  If I was a wiper, I would eat them.  They look like alewives on steroids.

Kevin, my pm. wouldn't go through. Greg let the bass go after some pict. We will get one framed instead of a mount.

  Sagebrush,

the alewive on steroids work better than the gizzard shad for me at Arthur. I'll get more cats on the shad. If I was a fish I would eat the perch & gills over either of those. The big bass Greg caught yesterday had a nice sized bluegills tail still showing in it's throat.

Chris. Just got back from Lake Erie, fishing was great; you should have seen the fish we caught! The first day started off bad with high winds, Got sick, would have never thought that would happen! lol Second day we went to Walnut Creek for walleye, 11 keepers in about 4 hours, ranging from 20"-28". Day 3 the weather was kind to us except for "darn sunburn" we ended up catching over 130 perch, keeping 90 nice ones. We were catching them 2 at a time; hot nonstop action! My wife caught the first walleye and an 8 lb sheep head along with 5 nice size white bass! We threw back a few 4-5 lb smallmouths because my friend said they are not good eating this time of year! Got some nice pictures! How is the striper fishing been lately? Bill

   Bill,

glad you & your wife had a great time. I've chummed in that lake enough times before. I have been off work 11 of the last 12 days & only made it to the lake 3-4 times . They are feedin on top from 11 pm. 'til 1 am. Greg keeps out fishin me. My buddies said Greg's bass was prob. 10 lbs. from the pict. He & I are going down at 10:30 tonight. Pm me if you wanna go camping in Oct. for Browns or Kings.

Icastalot,

Orange seem to be the best color every year there.
