I use mostly the long A shallow diver. You just have to retrieve it slow, so that it just makes a V on the surface. Slow, and steady.

the Bomber Long - A in the 5" model is most popular on Arthur. I've been doing ok with a Cotton Cordell (Boy Howdy) lately.
The ones Timmy & I had problems with a few days ago were def. Stripers & not Channel cats. If they bend my Rapala X-Rap-Walk 13 I give up. The back hook on it it a killer.

I'm with spoonchucker!  Long A, nice and slow.  Hard to beat.  I just bought an Xrap because I saw my buddy MISS lots of fish a week or so ago on it.  Pretty funny to me, not to him.  Was kind of thinking they were maybe walleye that couldn't get that big thing in their mouths.  Will be trying it the rest of the week after tomorrow.

I like the Bomber Long A slow on the surface, but on Friday night I was retrieving my lure quickly to cast to another smack and a nice striper crushed my lure. I tried it a couple of more times and got one more.

Here is a question, what is the most amount of Hybrids any of you guys caught in one night? My best is 6 last year on July 5th.

  THAT'S IT!!!!, I'm takin whatever vac. days I have saved up startin next Thursday 'til the 4th of July. Other wise the kids will [sm=belch.gif] me away, school lets out on Friday. I can't let those young wippersnappers do that to me. Plus it will be cheap & save me gas $$$ drivin too & from the Burgh every day [sm=crying.gif]

   The easiest way to catch the most Stripers is use a live alewive, hook it through the mouth (not under the lip) up through right before the eyes. DON'T use ANY weight or BOBBER, keep your rod tip as high as possible & let that little bugger swim the surface.
  I don't fish that way for them unless I'm very hard up for some action, maybe once or twice a year [sm=dark.gif][sm=blowingup.gif]

The most I caught in a night was in 1989 & 1990, beats me? STeelheadS????

The other night we were catching big alewives (8 inches or so) on our lures.  Has anyone ever used them this big for bait.  We must have caught half a dozen, all of them were foul hooked.  My buddy threw one out without any weight to no avail.

I don't get home from work 'til 12:30 am. Timmy called me at 12:45 from down the lake last night asking if I could give him a ride home. When I tracked him down wadeing a shore line he was beach'n another one. I'm tired of seein all his pitc. of fish to my few [:(]. I'll just pitch a tent in the back yard while on vac. & I'll be set to go. He whopped me Piken & Bassin this year [sm=help.gif], so I gotta give it my best so it don't happen with the Byrds. Only one beer in me at the time.

   Those Gizzard Shad work better for me in Aug. & Sept.

Possibly.  They were schooling together in little groups of 5 or 6.  I wasn't aware there were shad that big in there.  Could they have been gizzard shad?

Sage-  Yes, shad will get very big 12 or 13 inches.

Thought I was wasting my time tonight with the wind and the cold front, then around 11pm it calmed down and the fish turned on!  Boated 3 one being 27.5'' and FAT!  Was hoping for some walleye as my buddy got two last night, but 3 hook ups without losing any, for the first time ever, aint bad!!! [:)]

The big one I caught last night came off the blue and prism, the other two were on a all white pearl that is a special Bass Pro Bill Dance signature color.  My buddy caught a stiper and two walleye the night before last on the "ozark shad" which I believe is another Bill Dance color.  Like spoon said though, blues, both prism and silver are what I keep the most of.  Never tried clown.

Mick fish, were you one of the guys on the flat?  Last night was definitely the best night so far for me this year topwater action-wise.  Ashame we couldn't get many to bite and when I did I couldn't hook them.  I was getting very frustrated. I did have a huge one on next to the boat for five seconds or so, but couldn't see in the water to net it because of the little fog on top.  It had to be pushin close to thirty inches.  All my hits were on a giant (at least in my eyes) xrap that I put on after I got tired of my blue bomber.

  Don't look for the Blue / Prism colors around the Butler area, better off buying on-line [:@]

Dicks did have a few  (Rapala X-Rap- Walk 13's) left in the Blue / Prism. All my B/P in the Rapala's &
Bombers have the lipps ripped off form this year ,them darn (MEAN MOUTHS) Watched a in-fisherman show on Stripers & they broke the
lipps off on Purpose anyway. But I noticed it doesn't make the V wake & It feels like no weight when reelin.

Oh Well, I'll have to get out the spray guns & Prism tape [sm=help.gif]    Crappy

do they hit shiners/suckers/chubs too? or only the alewives, me and my dad gave arthur about 5 tries last year during the day and night, i think we got 5 or 6 bass total in about 24 hours fishing, i think i may try again friday night

Great thread guys.  I never thought it would have this many replies when I started it.  My favorite lure has been a zara spook (creme color).  It's been the only thing I've thrown this year.  I did however just buy an X rap 13.  Can't wait to try it.  Wiper fishing has to be the most exciting freshwater fishing..for me anyway.....the topwater explosions and the follow, the bait chasing, the fight, just awesome.

the Stripers are eatin machines. Stay with Alewives or Large Shiners this time of year. After mid July the Shad & Gills work good DEEP.

Yeah, fish deep water.  They'll bite anything,  get some crawlers and go try for walleye, you'll get a few. 

There are other ways at other times,  but I'm not saying.    It's not always easy anyway.

Last night stunk compared to the night before.  In the same spot and only managed one largemouth!  Not near as much surface action as the night before.  NOTHING til well after 11pm.
O'Donnells on Rt 19 north of Portersville has LOTS of blue and prism bombers.  You will pay for them though, like $5.69 each.

I hear you Mick fish.  Decent action, but not near like the night before.  We only managed one 21 inch walleye.  I think that was the only bite of the night.  Pretty depressing.  Yeah, that's what I call the flat.  Actually my buddies and I call it the "secret spot everybody knows about."  We have one of those in every lake/stream. lol!  A lot of the fish didn't sound like stripers though, was kind of thinking maybe there was a school of walleyes.  It also sounded like the majority of the fish near us ended up being right on the dropoff, not in the shallows.  Did you catch anything Frank?

Startin and Mick: where you guys on the flat last night? (Weds Night) I was out there, had the american flag hanging off of the anchor light.

Question for you all: In regards to lights on when you are anchored.... do you need your bow lights on (red/green) when anchored or do you HAVE to shut them off?

When anchored you only need the anchor light.
Bow light is optional.
