I don't know why I'm even bothering, but I can assure you I caught them long before I ever even owned a computer. I think I was about 12 when my brother caught one in Slippery Rock creek that I learned of them. I'm definitely not an expert.

Teddy, I have been fishing lake Arthur since it's existence, and PARTS of it before then. I have lived within ten miles of the lake, or rather where the lake now lays for 46 of my 49 years. And have fished for stripers no less the 60 days, or nights a year since they have been stocked there. I am no expert, as they often show me, but I have learned a thing or two.

Oh, and I was out there when every boat came off the lake at 9pm. Now it is quite a bit more crowded, but that happened LONG before it was ever mentioned on the internet. Speaking of the net. It seems to cause you a great deal of displeasure. Do yourself, AND us a favor, and stay the [sm=evileek.gif] off.

Oh Teddie, Not only did I not know about the strippers in Arthur five years ago, I didn't even know anything about the lake. I've only been fishing it for four years..Soo.... oh art' thou Holy master of fish, please entlighten me has to how to catch a fish and how such trendsetters like yourself, did it back in the day. I get much needed wisdom from your posts, always. [sm=help.gif]

read on PFBC website that they were going to discontinue stocking wipers in the states waterways due to a shortage of pike fry. they apparently traded pike fry for wiper fry from another state(cant remember which one). seems that the fishery might be in its last few years. i hope they start raising thier own wipers.arthur and shanango were listed as discontinued.

lake arthur has been the "PITTSBURGH PARADISE" as you say for at least 20-25 years. it seems every sailboat, pontoon boat and fisherpeople migrate there. it is easy access for many people. i fish the lake maybe twice a year and must admit i must be one of the only people that doesnt do well there. i rarely fish anywhere on the weekends but last saturday we found 68.6 degrees off the north shore and had the best day ive ever had. lunkerbuster that is an AWWWWESOMMMME fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now that you mention it Trans, the more i look at that fish the uglier it is. the gills are pretty nasty looking. if the guy caught it or didnt catch it, its still an awesome fish. if it washed ashore, i ASSUME it died of natural causes. if thats the case its pretty cool to think that it avoided the millions of hooks that went past it, ASSUMING that it may have never been caught and released. IF it was ever caught its nice to see that it was released. great to see pictures of fish that big and knowing they could be under your boat or in front or behind your line at any time.

Got broken off last night by the only striper I hooked into, but did get a 27 inch walleye, a 24 inch pike and a fifteen inch largemouth. The night as a whole sucked, but once the wind died down there was about an hour that we caught or missed six or seven fish. The two walleye that we caught this week were near the lilly pads in about two or three feet of water. Kind of wierd to me.

Headed down to the lake tonight! Conditions should be optimal. Just hope I do not cast out only to retreive a 60 year old, dead sailor mans body![:'(] Got to love a 27''' walleye Startinout! Will let you all know how we did, except for you Teddy cause you are already an expert!!! Hoping for a "Grove City Paradise" this evening!!!!

Caught 7 byrds & 2 L/M from 1:05 'til 3:34 'this morn. Not much top water smacks or pops goin on at all. 5 of the byrds were under 20'' which is a good sign for next year. Most bait moved out by 3:30 am.

Just got done cleaning 3 stripers and a 18'' walleye. Even though as was way out fished by my buddy, it was not a bad night at all! We caught the 3, missed 5 with the bonus walleye. Best part about the night was, at least where we were at, we seemed to have the lake to ourselves!!! Lots of bait and lots of smacks! Good luck all, except Ted cause he don't need any! [;)]

Yeah I read the post, as I do all of them. Cut the little bit of red flesh from the outside of the fillet off and stiper is one of the best eating fish in the lake! The white and flakey fillets are also gigantic and over the course of the season you need not keep but a few to put ALOT of meat in the freezer. So hopefully I have not offended anyone here, but I got news for you all, I'm not the only one eating hybrids out there. And don't worry there are still plenty more for everyone else to c&r, including the rest of the ones I catch now!

He kept them, because it was LEGAL to do so. I have searched the PF&BC website, and not found any such statement. Franken, can you post a link? The stocking program has seen occassional single year suspensions, due to a lack of available fingerlings. A new source, has kept the program more consistent over the past few years. We trade Walleye, not pike for them. The USDA ban on interstate transportation of live fish, may make it more difficult, and result in another TEMPORARY suspension. But I am sure they will find a solution. I saw NO mention of it though, and hybrids are still on the current year's stocking schedule.

This is the warm water schedule for Butler county and Mercer county also shows Shenango Lake scheduled for striper. Frankensteel, could you please cut and paste what you read for us.

I ate one last year that was bleeding so I didn't let it go. It wasn't terrible. Somewhere between a salmon and a coldwater sucker on my "like to eat list". Will be hitting it again tonight. May just fish till it's time to hunt turkeys. I think I'm addicted. lol! Now I may be focusing on walleye till the stripers come in with the success we've had the last week or so.

If you check the stocking history. shenango wasnt stocked with stripers in 2005 or 2006. lake arthur was stocked last year with only 1,700.

Wipers aren't bad table fare. Definitely wouldn't keep one from the rivers. I usually keep one per year from a lake. Mostly due to gut hooking, when I am fishing with alewives. They seem to inhale those things. Most hook ups with alewives that I get are in their throats or deeper, less than half are in the lip. Most lure caught fish are in the lips though. The only reason that I don't keep more, is they don't reproduce on their own. Like, just about any fish, trim the red meat, and it tastes fine. Hybrid striped bass, are what most resteraunt's sell as striped bass or rockfish. They make it really hard for commercial fishermen to harvest the purebred salty cousins of the wiper. Wholey's sells live wipers, at least they did. I saw Smalliekiller down there buying some, then putting on a hook and letting them swim around in the river. That's the only way that guy catches fish... FYI - Law states 2 fish per trip. I'm taking it, there was 3 combined with your buddy?

Porktown- yes combined with my buddy, we kept three...5 others released themselves![;)] As we speak I am actually cooking a "stiper chowder". It is a recipe that is real simple and works with any kind of fish. If anyone is interested let me know and I will forward it to you.
