the coldwater fisheries should be better than the warmwater ones have been this year.  I just saw four big rainbows (18"+) apper in the mouth of a local stream that dumps into a larger river and I usually don't see trout in the stream after mid-may.  The fish are hungry and jumping 2 feet out of the water for flies.  If only I could fly fish.......

Be hittin' her hard for waterfowl & fishin' startin' next week, the steel & so called fishermen can still stay up north for the rest ov the year. It's like havin' your own private lake commin' soon

Hey Chris, haven't heard from ya for awhile. I'm gonna have to get you an answering machine for Christmas , or you're birthday  When the weather stays cool for a week or two, I'd be up for fishin Moraine. Gotta blow the dust off the boat. It hasn't been out for a while. Kevin

Thanks Chris.  I'll give you a ring sometime next  week.  Maybe we can get out on the boat this fall with guns and rods and really fill the freezers!

Kevin that sounds good to hit the water with ya. Happy birthday to you, Greg & Manny on the first

Thought I had a few 100 chubs, darters, suckers & big fatheads in the bait tank for the late season but noticed a very large Smallmouth in there last week wonder how that ever got there??? Time to restock I guess .

Mike, Phil & I checked the birds out the other day & they were where hunting is not perm.
Not many flyin' 'round here like they should for this time ov year. Might just go north to priv. ponds if they don't relocate soon. Timmy & I made a bunch of tube jigs this eve. with his new mold. Have about 15 lbs. ov lead to go :) Headin' out to get some crawlers in a few. & clean some fishes. Give me a buzz anytime.

We should have a [/color BIGG cook out from all the fish & game to make room for the new season.

I was out there a few years back for geese and some DuuDe on an fan boat kept pushing them to us.  Of course, for some reason we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn that day, but he drove them 3 times.  I am assuming it was fish or game commission related as I doubt it's legal to drive fan boats on Arthur.  Either way, he musta been ticked we kept missing.

Of course, my favorite is the labor day hunt, because when you put out yer deeks all the yuppies come over and try to feed bread to em.  Had two girls stop by the one time.  We let em drive right into the middle of the set, and then I stood up and said "they aren't hungry." Poor girl nearly jumped outta the boat.  Unfortunately, they didn't wanna stay and hunt.  Coulda been fun.

Here is one of many fish my dad caught the other day at one of my spots. I took him on my boat for the second time this year. Hopefully we will go out Sunday. He had fun reeling it in on his crappie rod. Timmy

Found this Carp skeleton along the Bear Run launch area Saturday. Must've been a pretty nice sized carp. That's my minnow bucket above it for scale. Wonder what ate it so clean without doing much damage? There's still some skin on the rear of the body. The view of the skull is from beneath.

It only looks skinny cause I have chubby arm. Tim is out grass carpin' now. Them cheeks are easy & taste the best u noe?

Tim lost all his huntin'/ trap/ waterfowl/ arch. lice. yesterday on a dove/goose hunt. gonna try & look for it later, think he lost it in a goldenrod field .

I rem. years ago when Tim brought back to camp one ov those huge stinkin' rotted carp & we said get that the h$ll outta here. He was so proud & we hurt his feelings. Neted the big sm. mouth in the bait tank yesterday so might take Greg out for a restockin' later. My buddy didn't see his fawn for about a week & fond it the other day, nothin' but hair & bones left. I think it got zapped by lightnin'???

Buzz me

Anyone know typically when the lake turns over?  Also, does this usually only effect the deeper sections of the lake (fishing wise)?  I'm guessing it is usually at a certain surface temp, likely after a week or so of cold nights?

Doesn't sound like the lake is on fire per this site.  I'm hoping to get a free pass from the wife and kids one of these weekends coming up.  Just hoping that I don't end up choosing a day during then...

was out Saturday evening/night and did not have much action fishing. But on the way back some A-hole in a canoe or kayak was out in the middle of the lake with no lights what so ever. I almost ran him over with the pontoon boat. I will have to say that was the closest I ever came to killing someone with a boat.

I was at Bear Run launch on Sat evening securing my boat for the ride home and a guy came up to me and said he saw a man and a woman get into a canoe with 4 children, the smallest was an infant and held in the mothers arms. Some people have no common sense. I wonder if it was them that you almost ran over?

Fished Friday afternoon under a clear blue sky and finally managed some bass. Dont know what the water temp was but seems the cooler weather is starting to kickstart some feeding. Was successful at producing a bite by wadein out and chuckin soft plastics at the shoreline weed edges. The zoom toad (watermelon/red flake) was the flavor of the day for me.

Im guessing turnover occurs in Oct. sometime. Its been at least 3 weeks since my last trip to Arthur and the lake's vegetation is changing. The pads have moved/thinned a lot since my last time out. The underwater growth seems to be dyein off as well. I really should keep a journal.

What would u guys use to record water temps if u waded?

Not sure if most digital medical thermometers go lower than 75 or so degrees.  I think they figure if you have a temp that low, you are dead...  I'd stick away from the mercury ones, not even sure if they sell any more.  You could be in big touble if you happened to break one in your vest pocket and stabbed yourself with.

Pork, everything I have ever read in regards to the turnover says temps need to be right around 50* for it to start.  I have not been to Arthur in a few weeks, but I would say it will be at least another month until we see those temps up there to begin the turnover.

STEELYS- They make stream thermometers, you can find them at most decent tackle shops and probably just about every fly shop.

No the canoe/kayak only had one person in it thank god.  Still can't believe someone was than stupid to out in the middle of the lake with NO LIGHTS or even being on the water anywhere with no lights is dangerous. I just glad I didn't run him over.

http://www.onthelake.net/fishing/turnover.htm

I really dont know much about turnover in relation to Arthur but how deep does a lake need to be to have a thermocline present? It seems to me Arthur would be considered a shallow lake. The deepest area of the lake is roughly 30-40 feet according to a depth chart. Would you consider the majority of the lake shallow? Does a thermocline even exist in Arthur which is a neccessary ingredient for turnover to occur. I could maybe see turnover affecting the deeper areas of the lake but not neccessarily its fingers. Do you guys believe the whole lake would be affected by turnover or could you believe that the majority of water is constantly mixing without a thermocline present? I always start reading articles this time of year concerning turnover but Im not sold on the idea that turnover occurs in Arthur. Any thoughts.

I should add that my fishing only involves wading and I dont own a boat so whatever is out there beyond my casting ability is mysterious to me.

Arthur doesn't turn over, not deep enough to form a thermocline for one and all the water coming in and out of the streams doesn't let it ever settle.

If i get to arthur again i will take pics of my sonar and show you the thermocline, its there. there is enough deeper water to say that the turbidity from turnover should effect the whole lake. power generation lakes and lakes with a bottom discharge tend to have multiple thermoclines. i marked 5 at keystone powerdam up near reefers cove. there isnt enough current in arthur to wash out a thermocline or set up multiples.

I must have my depth finder sensativity turned up way too high.  I could swear there is a thermocline in the deeper water???  I always thought, this is why live bait dies so quick when fishing it deep too?

That's good to know, but the plan is to still tell the wife that I need out ASAP, to "avoid the turnover".  And not the truth, that I need out ASAP before I go insane!!!
