Pln,

if you go ultra light plan on eatin them, especially June tru Aug. they fight theirself to death in warmer water on that outfit. Some young studs on here can fish it 24-7. They don't need to work . Hope I can retire in 5 yrs.

I like snow cones, , Crappy

very good to know. if it was a mahi mahi or a nice red grouper i would be all for the slaughter. unfortunatly 99% of freshwater fish just doesnt do it for me in the taste department other then walleye. if i do make the trip i feel a new approach to tactics coming about. just gonna have to wait for those drag burning runs till i get back down to florida for a vaca.

   Kevin,

Proud?, I've been fishin my butt off for the last 35 yrs. & that little bugger has me beat on most fish . Them darn south paws!!! At least I'm up on the snail & a alwife. I'll prob. take the weekend off to work on the shack & give the workin men a little more room for fishin. Timmy will call you after turkey huntin about what yinzes wanna go after.... Later

  Pln,

even in late Aug. fishin for cats with live bluegills & 17 lb. test I'll catch some by accident over 30'' & it takes a little while to revive them   Mid. June is prime time from 10:30 'til 3 for me.

Good Luck, I like Frosty the Snowman Snowcones

I have to agree with Jim here. It's like Steehead reports. I don't understand why people get fired up over someone posting a report in November. Because with the number of people fishing, the odds are a 100-1, that people will fish that spot regarless of wether or not a report is posted. On the other hand, I understand NOT posting a report about catching fish upstream, in September. If you took a chance, and were rewarded, you should be able to reap that reward for a while.

I will tell you that the action will typically start anywhere from the last week of April, to the 3d week in May, and that by June, it is always going. I'll share tecniques, bait choices, general locations, and a FEW specific locations. What I won't do, is post a report the DAY it starts. I spend MANY fishless hours, and nights, to be there when it starts. That gives me a week or so of relative peace, before others take a chance, and find what I have found. After THAT point I'll tell the world, because it really doesn't matter. Folks will be fishing, and I'll either have to go early to get my spot, or fish a secondary location. Either way, I'll catch fish, and so will others. But only if they take a chance, and go fishing.

Just came off the lake shortly after 1am.  Once again, everything was perfect accept the bite!  My friend in another boat managed a few smallmouths and claims he lost a striper hit, but I was skunked for the second night in less than a week.  I do have to admit that I am very much a rookie at the night time casting for stripers, so any help would be much appreciated.  I fished the shoreline down by the boat rentals, around the island on the Bear Run side of the boat rentals (this is where the most alewife action was) and in the shallows on the "shoal" by the dam.  There were quite a few guys fishing from shore at the Bear Run launch as I was leaving, so maybe they know something I don't.  The boats that were out were scattered all around and I only heard a couple smacks from feeding fish.

   MICK FISH,

I just got in. The guys around where I was at didn't do any good either on elwifes & top water bombers.
My drag got a good workout 'tis morn. though.  Even kept a couple for the grill.

  Good Luck, Crappy

The night bite really hasn't turned on yet. It was starting friday, but the front that came through sat./sun. set it back again. I got two tonight, but it was real late 1:30 or so. Even the bait activity was less than it was last week, which is odd. Keep plugging slow, and steady.

What kind of artificial bait do you guys use to cast for Strippers at night/day? I only went a few times since moving to Pittsburgh, and just used bobbers with live bait. Any help is appreciated as i can't wait to catch some this year again. Thanks

After last night I have officially decided that it doesn't matter what kind of lure you use(bomber) and what kind of retrieve you use(slowwww)  and where you are at on the lake.  I know there are more stripers in some areas than others,  but I also think if you had the time and could stay out alll night you would get into the stripers at some point.  Our boat had a decent night last night.  One walleye, one channel cat, two stripers, one snapped line, and three other hookups that the fish eventually won.  All the fish we landed were over twenty three inches.  I can't wait till I don't have to freeze my niblets off just to fish at night..lol.

I wasn't particularlly cold ( of course I was well dressed ). It was damp which made it feel colder, and the wind, depending on where you were, probabley added to that. I've fished much colder nights. Early on, even a mild cold front, or pressure change tends to put the bait, and the bite down. Once it has been going for a while, they seem to have little affect on the bite, and almost none on the bait activity. There definately was SOME bait, and a few fish going last night. But not as much as one would expect, given the water temp. and that the bait has been going for over a week. I can't explain it, but they seem to change their patterns a little every few years. Nothing major, but enough to be frustrating at times. I put in enough time, that I know I will find and catch them. But it's easier to be patient when it is warm, and calm.

It wasn't near as cold as two nights ago.  But that was more the wind than the cold.  The wind both nights was just coming right through me.  Striper fishing absolutely blows my mind.  We got the first two when they weren't even slapping yet.  Then when the alwife were going strong, we didn't get a thing till they started to tail off again.  We just can't really seem to absolutely pattern them ever.  It's always different every night.  Maybe we need to pay more attention to the wind, or barometric pressure, or moon phase or something.  I don't know.

I thought, (wrongly) that they would put on the feed bag ahead of this front. Of course with storms looming, I opted to fish from shore, rather than launch the boat. This limited my mobility, and options, but I hit areas that historically would see action if there were any on the lake. Typically a front like this, this early in the season, can put them off for a week or more. I don't expect very good fishing this week. Hopefully I'm wrong, ( sometimes they just act wierd ), and I don't have enough sense not to try anyway.

There was a SMALL amount of action last night, and I did see ONE caught. I don't know if you, OR I will catch them, but I know we WON'T if we are not there.

Spoonchucker, were you one of the three guys wading that left at 2:00?  I wish we would have left then.lol.  Same thing for me, I had high hopes for last night but we didn't do squat.  I think we had two strikes all night.

No, I never put my waders on. You really only need them in a handfull of places. 80-90 percent of the hits you hear are 5-20 feet from shore. There were three guys wading by me, standing in the middle of the bait where any active fish would WANT to be, and easily reachable from shore.

My favorite lures are zara spooks or some derivation thereof. They produce unbelievable strikes on top.  Last week we got explosive hits on every other cast for about a 45 minutes.  Landed a couple of monsters.  Saw no surface activity but they were coming up for our baits.

You could fish from a ton of shore spots.  Some are obviously better than others, but you could catch nighttime stripers just about anywhere you can see the shallow water.  Swimfish, I talk about my blue bomber enough that my fishing buddy wants to occasionally throw me off the boat.  I say you can't go wrong with it, but my buddy also does good with a skidder pop.  Seems like firetiger or blue works good.  I'm not sure about how important color is when they're feeding, because I don't experiment much.  Maybe one of the other guys have more input on that.

My fav. is the bomber with a back prop., I'm down to my last one  & it's not the best color for birds but is good on bass & eyes.
They quit makin them some years ago & I can't even find them on e-bay. The props can't be put on the new ones since the eye is molded into the body. The 7'' original Rapala is hard to beat & the Dying Flutter is right up there. Some nights the Jitterbug is tops.

Good Luck, Crappie loves raspberry snow cones.

Look out PorkTown !!!

Since they weren't hitting when they "should", I figured I'd fish when they "shouldn't". It paid off with a fish on the first cast. After a lenngthy lull, they turned on again. I caught 3 more, missed/lost a few, and lost one plus my lure to a submerged stump. All I can say, is fish when you can. You never know.

I am new to the Pittsburgh area (originally from Chesapeake Bay area)...My first 2 trips to Arthur with my boat were a bust.  Water temps were 55 first time and 60 the last time.  I may give it a shot at night this weekend around Muddy Creek.

If you had a choice, would you fish near the dam or east of the 528 bridge?  Deciding where I want to launch my boat.

With regular stripers, bucktails and bloodworms worked great...I am assuming they should work just as well with hybrids.

At night, it's mostly a shallow water/surface action thing.  Listen for splashing/spawning alewives and fish busting them.  I've never tried fishing deep for them in the dark.

They will hit bucktails if you find them in deeper water. When and how to do that,  changes from day to day it seems.  I've stopped claiming to know anything about them.   They make my head spin sometimes.
