My dad dropped my little brother and me off at the lake this afternoon for a couple of hours. I managed 4 bass, and a good sized pike that I caught on a frog. Here is a picture of one of the bass I caught from Arthur today. It was a 24'' er.Also it was a great fight and did a few jumps even. My biggest bass so far this year from the lake. Enjoy!!!!! Timmy

I've had muskies straighten some hooks on heavy duty 4 & 6 ought hooks.  Like spoon said it is about the leverage that a lure and treble gives the fish.

Also being welded together will weaken the steel ... or do they come out of the mold complete?

I would third, or fourth, or fifth; lost count.  I agree with crappie about the hooks too.  I took me all year last year to learn my lesson on the bomber hooks.  I had numerous straightened or bent beyond saving by stripers, but mostly big cats last year.  That was even with 8 pound test, so I would imagine if my drag was set too tight those fish would easily snap my line on one of their runs.  This year I changed my hooks and haven't had any problems yet, although I also haven't caught any huge cats or stripers yet.  Last weekend we caught three fish to one with the bombers over nice lively alewifes. Can't wait for this weekend.  It will be nice to finally fish at night without a coat and long undies.

Anyone still catching crappie in the shallow brush.  I want to take my kids up tomorrow and give it a go.  I know it's hot.  Wondering if they're still in shallow during the day.

Caught this along with a few more tonight, all about the same size....No biguns, but had fun catchin' them with my bro that came in from Ohio tonight.  Also got 2 channels and one bullhead.  The water was boilin' out there this evening....activity galore.  Tight Lines!

went out last night. some serious activity. Finally caught my first striper and that is as much fun as fighting steelhead. Was 24 inches and he took me in and out three times before I landed him. He definitely bent the cheap hooks on the bomber so I will be following the advice to change them. Also when I left for the lake last night I forgot to respool my reel which only had half the capacity on it so he almost spooled me. Lucky I didnt lose him. Managed a few L/M all in the 14-17 range but no girth. Also got a bull cat on the bomber which surprised me. As I was releasing the bull My headlamp flashed the water and no further than 4 feet out was a huge musky cruising right by me. What a beast!!! What a night of fishing!!

By far, last night was the best night so far this year for surface activity.  If only more of them were coming up out away from the friggin lilly pads and seaweed.  Man is it frustrating knowing that if you get a cast in and it stays snag free long enough that you're going to catch a walleye or cat or striper pretty quick, but odds are you're going to get a  snag if you don't get a fish.  We mostly got catfish last night, but caught a little of everything.  The alewifes must be close to laying their eggs.  It seemed like everytime I put one on a hook last night, it squeezed out eggs all over me.  Pretty nasty.

Last night first night out this year. fished in front of island south of bear run boat launch. Alot of surface activity my son landed his first striper 25in long. Most activity seemed close to shore. Lost 2 other fish throwing bombers and rapalas.surprised we didnt get more hook ups with all the action. tried 2 spots on the way out lots of surface activity but no hook ups. this was my third trip is this common? How long does this action go into the summer thanks in advance.

My thought on lots of activity, but few hits. We have just the past few days, started seeing spawning ( Stiper ) activity. This has the majority of the fish, in a limited number of areas. The whole lake has plenty of bait activity, but many common areas are seeing little FEEDING activity. I don't think the larger, mature fish are feeding, but the smaller fish ( that ARE feeding ) are hanging close them. The next few days should see the fish spread out a bit more, and feed more agressively.  An odd, and off timed year, in my opinion.

pa,  just get yourself a 4' cast net and you can get all the bait you want while your out there fishing.  I got mine when I was in Ft. Myers last summer for like $15 and it really comes in handy.

Question about using a net up at Arthur. This 4' rule. Is that 4' diameter, or 4' radius? I called PFBC and she said you do not need a permit as long as it is 4'.

Cant find that statement in the rules anywhere....

Thanks

The top water night action wiill last 'til around the 10th of July, give or take a couple of days. Fish 'em near & deep water after that 'till fall then it sortta gets like fishin' 'em in sprin again. EVEN if you COULD buy Alewife the stores or fishermen would have a heck of a time keepin' 'em alive this time of year. Seen guys catch 50 - 100 & dump 'em out 5 min. later dead, then do it again & again  . The kids & I pick 'em up & freeze them for bait at a later date. Took the night off too make some room for the weekend guys.

This time of year they are close to shore mostly from 10 pm - 2 pm dependin' on the weather. Guys kill 'em with shiners, keep your rod tip high & let them little buggers swim the surface with no weight or float.

Ice is key to keeping them alive.  I tried keeping them cool with ice in my livewell, and I actually kept some alive till the following weekend.  When I forget the ice though, we only catch ten at  a time because you're right, they don't live long.  Of course they aren't hard to catch right now with a ten foot cast net.

I keep them alive....Right in the lake!  Reason being, I simply cast net while fishing as I need bait.  Those things are everywhere on Arthur in the bays at night and its not hard to get a few on just about every cast of the net.  Quite simple....no ice, no minnie bucket no messin' around.

My buddy and I hit the lake last night. Arrived around 10PM baitfish everywhere. Started with the bass biting first we picked up 7. Then around 12am hook a striper and it came unbuttoned. About 20min. later nailed another this one stayed hooked but for a spell thought I was going to lose him in the pads. He was 8 1/2 lbs. Then at 1am everything went dead. All fish where caught on bomber's.

Icast,

A permit is required for nets over 4ft DIAMETER.
