I am gonna take the canoe up there tomorrow afternoon. I haven't been up there in a couple years, does anyone have any suggestions on where to maybe put in?

I know some of you are probably already going " go scout it out and find somewhere on your own" but I travel alot for a living and dont get to fish too much. My fishing times are limited when I can go and I appreciate any info that is given. Thanks in advance.

PS- I am fishing for bass or whatever. I thought about putting in up at Muddy Creek and the forecast is for winds at 15 with some gusts in the afternoon. Is there anyplace on the lake that you can get away from the wind in a canoe?

the 5points/cabins area is probably the most well protected from the wind/waves.  I've done ok on bass back there

Iron City, I would launch out of McDanels Launch. I always see lots of kayaks and canoes back there.

Good Luck.

Yeah, that's where I'm gonna put my boat in tomorrow night.  I know where the 528 launches are, but I've never used them so I don't know if I should up and put in there.

Hit up Mcdanels launch and sent the canoe asail into the wind. fished from 4 till 8 and got 11 between two of us. All bass except for one crappie. Windy as all get out, all fish were in the 12" range. All caught on chart/white buzzbaits in 1-4 feet of water. We missed a bunch too but thats just how it goes with buzzin. tight lines~

...almost a bust for me.

Lake was clear and calm....no wind, nothing.  Was out from about 8:30-4:00 and hooked up near another launch with some legal largemouths, but that was about it.....All the alewives were breeding like crazy, and the stripers were hitting them....just not hitting my bait.  Ah well, live and learn....

Oh, and I can only assume that I heard the Stripers....yanno, the things that sound like basketballs being slammed against the surface of the water amongst the overly horny baitfish.

Baketballs... yep that is a pretty good description. The first time I was up there and it was pitch black I think I described it as someone launching cannonballs at my boat. But basketballs works too. Catching them on live bait is very fun, but there is no other experience that I have had by catching them on a lure. Holy crap do they hit that thing. I get fired up just thinking about it. Good Luck!

Just a heads up if you wanna land the big ones consistency with the Bombers, Wounded Zarra Spooks & alot of other lures replace the hooks before you fish 'em. Had a 26" & 27"er straighten 'em this mornin' on 10 lb. test with the drag set perfect. Landed 'em both after a little chase so they wouldn't hit the backing. Both lures were new first time fishin' 'em. Don't think I would've landed the larger fish in the area on the JUNK stock hooks that come with 'em.

JUST A HEADS UP Snow cones GOOD!!

There isn't a hybrid in arthur that is going to straighten your treble hooks unless, they are defective, or you got line spooled that is way too heavy with a drag set too tight. Everybody on here that dosen't believe me, try something. Keep in mind Zaras, bombers, and others are mentioned.

Take the lures and try straightening the hooks while someone holds your fishing rod with the drag set how it would be if you were fishing for them.
Can you straighten the treble? Try cheating with pliers.

The 3rd week of May I hooked 20, if not more, hybrids on the ohio that went from 5lbs up to one that went almost 16lbs on my digital scale. My point being, everyone of these fish were hooked with cheap ass eagle claw jig hooks I use to mold my own jig heads, and not one of these fish were lost due to a straightened hook. These straighten out with little effort by hand, but NEVER has a fish straightened them out.

Probably wonder why I fish with them? Because a fish will not straighten them if your drag is set correctly, but if you encounter a snag sometimes they will straighten enough to pull them loose before the line breaks.

I have seen hooks start to straighten on 8lb stripers, I always replace my trebles as soon as open the package. the stock hooks are junk on the bombers, weak and not sharp!!

I think I will side with Crappiefisher on this one. I have seen first hand 2 of 3 trebles straighten out on my lures.

Carp,

The leverage place on a treble hook, is much different from that place on a single jig hook.

Yeah it was my fault for not replacein' the hooks again. I've had 'em destroy new lures....ripped the hooks off, back props & hooks missin', split rings snap, hook eyes pull out & jointed ones ripped in half. Caught many over 30" on single Eagle Claw hooks with bluegills for bait without ever having one straighten. Many nice Flatheads also.

Still not convinced. Believe me, I've caught my fair share of huge fish, hybrids, cats, etc... on single hooks, AND trebles. Never really had a problem and I fish almost everyday. Not to stir anything up, but I look at it more as faulty hooks and/or rings. Some guys on here put a "magical fish" status on the hybrids. Don't get me wrong they are unbelievable fighters, but they are not what some guys make them out to be.

I've not only straightened hooks, but split rings, and also had the hooks completely ripped out of several different types of lures.   I will agree that this is mostly due to me horsing the fish too much, but some hooks are cheap.  If you're nearby lilly pads/weeds, snags, sometimes you have to put the breaks on them.

I'd rather have the hooks straighten out though, than have the line break and lose an expensive lure, or even worse, a discontinued lure.

Also,  I'm sure you could land them on 2 pound test and a light wire dry fly hook if you wanted to. But some people don't like to over fight fish they plan on releasing. It stresses them too much.

I'd rather pay a couple extra bucks for better made lures & not have a prob. (worry) landin' nice sized fish.
Purdy bad 'em gettin distroyed on 10# line with drag set fine. I'll fish em ultralite in the cooler months on single sm. hooks without hook problems.

If they destroy my X-Rap 13 that would be one heck ov a fish.

Actually, I had a smallmouth on Presque isle last year rip the back hooks off an x-rap. The smaller version x-rap though.

The hybrids tear up an original floating rap easy, they tear the wire out from the center of that light wood. The x-raps are much stronger.

Points taken, however hooks being ripped out of the body of a lure shows the hook I'm sure held up, but the pin/wire did'nt. You don't have to horse a fish in or set your drag like you are grouper fishing, to not overly stress a fish. I took a dozen lures I use for targeting hybrids, and tested the hooks the way I mentioned before, and they all held up. I think you guys are setting your drags way too tight, or getting faulty lures. All the hybrids I ever caught have not given me problems. Perhaps there is something in the water in Arthur that makes these fish super-strong-magic-fish.

I had a smallmouth about 5 years ago take half of a J9 jointed rapala in the connoquenessing. all that came back was the front half. It was an old lure though, one of my grandfathers. Still none the less a great story. Bad tackle can only be blamed on one person.....YOU
