Anyone try gizzards for wipers? I know there kind of big but I'm sure a big wiper couldn't resist one.

I'm headed to Arthur in the morning with the wife. Figured we could try some channel cat fishing early. This is something that I've been researching and figured she'd have fun with since there are so many there. I was going to hit the road beds in Osprey Lookout Bay. Would this be a good place to start? Any other suggestions? I made some homemade stinkbait and cured some chicken livers. I also plan on using fresh gills for bait. Any tips would be appreciated.....We will also do some muskie trolling since I can't resist that either!

I'll report back after tomorrow.

Found a nice spot to myself near my favorite spot Sunday night amongst the large crowd. Caught a smaller one on my 5th cast. Two guys run right into my cast zone seconds after I released the fish!

I do not complain much about crowds especially the eve of Memorial Day, but these two cut the motor about 10 yards from where I got the hit and troll directly in to my right side. Then after no more than 5 minutes, they troll back out arould my cast zone and yell over asking "if anything was happening around here?!"

Red faced, I kindly replied "not much". What would you do? Would I have been a jerk to offer my other seat in the boat, or possibly sound off "nothing now!"???

Corteousy seems to something far too many lack! Of course this fish was at 10:30pm and I stayed till 1:30am without another. Finished the night by giving a spool of line to some bright eyed young man at the dock, who had just been spooled doing some shore fishing. I hope he caught more than me!

They can't resist the smaller ones if you can find them (at least in the rivers).

I casted a 7"er out this weekend (Arthur), on a balloon rig. It just kept swimming back to shore. It seemed like the alewives are a bit bigger this year. We caught a few in the 5" range. Nothing like some of the gizzard shad, but big enough to entice the hogs.

I hit the lake two days over the weekend. One guy in our group caught a small wiper one night and the other night caught a mix bag, mostly wipers. Fishing certainly seems weather dependant.

Tim,

it's gettin' down to 38*F tonight. Gonna put the longjohns back on. Mixed bag is right on of wipers, walleye, pike, bass, crappie & cats lately. The kids caught a huge L/M, Channel, Crappy, & a Pike at a farm pond yesterday, all trophy sz. I went out last night to the lake & could only manage a L/M, Wiper & a Walleye

I'll tell Tim to post a pic. of one ov the fish from yesterday.

That's awesome! Most of us chaulk that up as a victory on Arthur. Just a fair day for the Crappiefisher household...

I like the mixed bag thing. I'm targetting the hard pullers, but a bonus walleye is truely appreciated!

Was a great night of big fish/bait fish action, but not too many caught. Three of the ones we caught were nice though. Got another 8+ pound striper 27 inches, a real nice channel cat and a 15 1/2 inch crappie. A couple largemouth as well. It was wierd, caught more on lures than alewifes. Usually with the amount of topwater action as last night the alewifes for bait are unbeatable.

Well I said I'd check back with results from Monday. We got some small Bullheads a few bass and a bunch of gills. We trolled for muskies for a short time with no strikes. This bass was the only fish really worth taking a photo of. It was nice to get out on the water and relax with the wife and fish for fun.

he said he was talkin' 'bout my face on the pic.

Got into a very nice SNOW/WIND SQUALL (Deadliest Catch?) early this mornin' for about 2 min. while fighting a wiper.
The action was just about nonstop from 1:30 'till 3:30 am. on smaller birds 18-20"ers. They were alot
of fun though with alot of spunk.

Fishin' is Fun!

Anyone have suggestions for areas to hit on a first time all nighter? Taking the boat out Monday night...hopefully get something moving.... Neally Point worth trolling late night?

he's doin' good but workin' on my nerves. Can't recall the sz. of that one but got into a handfull of 15-17"ers that morning. It has been a good year for 15" plus slabs so far. I'm far from bein' a good fisher but for as much time I spend at it sooner or later gotta catch somethin'.

Went out at midnight, do it every year to start my birthday. First cast & a nice Muskie cut my line without even gettin' a hook set. She gave me a big jump & a smile as she swam away

. Caught a fat Bird at 2:22, not the longest of the year but by far the best battle. Didn't think my arm was gonna make it on that one.

P.F.S,

What are you after? Most of the night guys are throwin' top water lures or live bait workin' the shorelines/islands/Rd. beds/points. Work 'em SLOW usein' the elec. motor, drift or anchor.

The best advice for places to go... Listen for them! Start off in a spot that has a point and a cove close by. Listen for the surface action, and go there. Some nights they have the baitfish pushed back into the coves, and the next night they are out in the lake itself. The baitfish will likely be pretty close to shore, in water as shallow as 6". More likely be in 2'-3' of water. They seem to be all over the lake too. Just about everywhere that I've tried at this time of year, the fish are there. Neely's is nice for the cove/point thing, but expect company. The 422 island is also a favorite of half the boats on the lake. Grab a map, find some other points and coves that others aren't on, and give them a shot. If you don't hear baitfish or surface action, move to where you hear it. I've had slow days turn into some of my better days, by moving 50 yards down the shore to where I heard them.

I'm looking to head out around 6:00pm and stick it out most of the night....'specially depending on the bite.

Really, I'm looking for filets. Never once have I caught a walleye or striper from the lake

, and I'd really like to change that. I only mention Neelys because of advice from my neighbor who just kills 'em up there.

I was thinking mostly live baiting it, as I don't have to many deep water lures...though I may pick some up before I head out. I've done well up pymy with Hot n Tots, so maybe I'll give them a go.

Pan,

When the fish, Stripers, Walleye, and even Channels, are keying in on the Alewives at night, the last thing you need/want is "deep water" lures. Every thing is surface oriented.

If you're using live bait, don't be afraid to put your bobber within six inches or so from your minnow when the surface activity turns on. Also, I think non-lighted bobbers work way better than lighted ones bite-wise. It can be a pain though if your boat has more than a couple lines out. Also, we've probably caught close to 100% of our fish the past couple years in less than 4 feet of water. Definitely less than 5. I haven't had the chance to try it yet this year, but I would think trolling the weed lines would be dynomite at night for stripers and walleyes getting ready to come in shallow. If we get the storms tomorrow night like they say and it's real windy, I may try that tomorrow night myself.

Another thing that I have read, but don't have the equipment to try, is planer boards. Have them run the shallow water, while your boat is further away.

I've tried using two rods at one time, and ends up just leading to missing a fish on the rod that I didn't happen to be holding... Good call on the 6" thing too. They don't seem to be hardware shy fish at all.

Wow, thanks for all the info guys.

I don't have a license to use a casting net for alewives, but I know a few good spots to set traps for big creek chubs...they worth anything in this situation to anyones knowledge?

I called the PFBC a few weeks ago. As long as your cast net is under 4' diameter, you are fine. According to the lady on the phone... Not sure that would hold up in court, but think the permit is for anything larger. Yet to see anyone toss a 10'er. Would be fun, just to watch...

Planer boards are tough to run in shallow because of the weeds. Even away from where they're growing there's usually enough cut up weed floating around that your lures get fouled often.

Went out this evening with my two freinds on their boat for a few hours, and we managed 18 bass. Four of which were keepers. 15'', 15.5'', 15.75'', and a 16.75''. Lots of fish just nothing too big. Good luck

Just got back from Arthur. We got 5 wipers and a bass....this was the biggest of the wipers, 23". A beautiful night just before the storm.

Just got back & didn't start pickin' em up 'til after a little 5 min. drizzle No storm on the part of the lake I was at. The South shore exit area has had tons more Wipers so far this year than the 528 area. I'm still not gonna fish south shore even though it's been hot for almost a month

Very little bait & fishermen showed up again M/C, Shannon & Swamp Run witch is good. Just have to pay a closer watch for the very little act. now & then.

Timmy, you should have said keepers if they were in a in season bass tornament.
