I have never tried for myself, but hear chicken livers are a good hybrid bait.  I'm planning to make it there or the river to chase some around tomorrow.  I was actually debating to grab a tub of livers at the store today.  I don't like touching the things myself.  They don't stay on the hook very well, and touching raw chicken without the ability to wash my hands just sucks.  I usually end up tossing half of the tub in the garbage, so hate wasting what someone else would normally eat.

Speaking of good Chesepeake / chicken... baits.  Did you ever use chicken breast meat will fishing the bay?  Strips of meat soaked in peeler crab oil is a pretty big bait down there.  I'm guessing they mistake it for a piece of crab meat?  I had a really nice take on a nonmarinaded strip at the Indian River inlet at the Deleware shore a few years back.  I think it is best for weak fish, but people do catch stripers on it.

Has anyone been out in the evenings yet this year? If so, has there been any alewife action?

PF&BC stocked 18,000 Stripers today, 2,000 more than most previous years.

no need for bloodworms, they'll eat nightcrawlers just fine when they aren't keyed in on the alewives on the surface.  Good luck keeping the bluegills off though, major pain in the butt.

I would not question Spoon!  If he says they stocked 18,000 I would bet they stocked 18,000!  Remember we are talking about little bitty fish here.  If they did put 18,000 in today, 1,000 are probally already being digested tonight by other fish, 1,000 probally just plain died, and 1,800 might make it to adulthood someday!

18,000 I was there when they dumped them in. MICK, is right, they were not stocked as adults. Your number, 1,800 is probabley about correct as to the number that survive to maturity ( maybe a BIT low ).

8 to 10 percent survival rate to adult fish is very close. Might not even be that high maybe 5%.

I watched them stock tiger musky in shawnee several years ago as fingerlings,,the guy told me the rate was about 3%,that would live in perfect conditions.

I'm sure the survival rate varies greatly between different species of fish, and also varies from year to year, and from one body of water to another. There's lots of things that can cause it to be high or low.  I don't think there is anyway to know for sure exactly how many survive, but I do know that they do well in Lake Arthur and hope that never changes.

As far as the number stocked, 18,000 sounds accurate.  When they can get them, 16,000 has been a common number they've stocked, with a couple years they actually stocked 32,000.  You can get those numbers off the PAFBC website if you dig around on there.

Got a couple stripers and a couple nice walleyes in the early a.m. hours this week.  Saw probably the biggest musky of my life Friday night right before the rain hit in the green light on the front of the boat.  Couldn't get to the spotlight quick enough to check it out, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were 50+ inches.  I tried getting it to hit my topwater X rap that I had on, but it showed no interest.  Maybe it was looking for the same thing as I was, a nice walleye or two to eat.

Search around on here, you may end up finding a lake closer to home that gets these guys stocked as well.  It's pretty interesting to see what is in where.  Remember that fry are basically the size of guppies, so stocking 1/2 Million of these fish, equals about 20K of fingerlings (size of minnows) to adulthood.

http://pfbc.state.pa.us/pfbc_webgis/WWCWStockingDetails_historical.aspx

Fished the lake on Saturday afternoon - night.  Around dusk, the baitfish started hitting the surface pretty good, then died down.  I'd imagine the warm sun during the day got them moving, then the quick cool down got them down as fast as they were up.  Not many sounds of the larger ones chasing them.  No stripes or eyes for my crew.

Has anyone else noticed that the past two weeks, the time the stripers really turn on varies drastically.  I'm talking like three to five hours different within a couple days.  Just wondering if the whole lake has been like that, or if it's just our spots that we've been fishing.

This time of year it's purdy common with the weather changes. I'll be hittin it 1 am. 'till 4 am. this week & next.

Nope .... Been catching from 11PM till dawn . If you catch & use alewives be sure to save some for the first hour of light if you can afford to stay all night . Its worth it this time of year. If the bait stays all night in shallow you can bet your pay check the gamefish are there as well.

Last night was the first night it's been DEAD for the past three weeks or so.  So we just ended up catching some alewifes the last half hour or so and headed home.  That's good to know Dream catcher!  I've been wondering how the fishing would be at first light.  I just told my buddy last night that I can't remember the last time I really fished the lake during daylight hours.  I'll have to give it a try sometime this week.

Been catchin a few, daylight hrs. for the past 3 weeks. On the warmer spells the bait comes in earlier at night & on the colder days it can be a long night/mornin' waitin' 'em out this time of year. By mid. June 'til early July they are easy to patern. If I head out tonight it won't be 'til about 2:30 or 3 am. Sortta makes it nice if Timmy fishes it 'til dark then Matt heads out & calls me up if the action starts up before 1:00 am. Dusk & dawn is most always a good time to be out fishin' for somethin'.

Hey Crappie, I hear Matt's not working in Grove City anymore.  I'm sorry to hear that.  Tell him Bob said hi and I wish him lots of luck.  Maybe I'll see him at the lake!

Are you still fishing the Muddy Creek area, Crappie?  We've been fishing till 3:30 a.m. or so the last few weeks and I haven't seen another boat anywhere else on the entire lake, not that I'm complaining.

It's eggs, hard to tell in the pic because they are tiny. But that is a giant lump/skein of eggs.

Don't worry Dave, we're done killing for the year. Those two both had the trebles in their gills anyway.

Okay....time for a biology lesson.....

I thought since these are hybrid stripers they are not able to reproduce. Now do they produce eggs and those eggs are just not able to be fertilized? Or do they have the ability to reproduce?

Nice fish by the way, Crappie

They spawn, the eggs just don't make it.    There was some folks questioning whether they spawned on here a few years back,   I finally stuck a knife in one and figured I'd take some pictures for those who didn't believe.  There was even some biologists type dude, can't remember his name, claiming they lacked some chemical they needed to produce them. I guess he was mistaken.   I believe it is a dead horse, I guess they believed after all the info. you can find searching the net about them spawning, I just thought I'd post a picture is all.
