I like to use ultra-light spinnin on em with a steel leader but thinkin on puttin on 8# test next outin', too much wood around to try & keep 'em out of. Timmy kicks my butt every year with a bait caster & 8-10lb. with a steel leader. 12lb. test with leader should be good with whatever reel/rod you feel comfort with for Pike up &
over 40".

For the hooks I'd do whatever you want. They are hardy fish & purdy hard to hurt. Set the hook quick. But bendin' the barbs might save you a trip to the hospital if one decides to trash you in the face.  The PAF&BC only
stocked it the first couple years of the lake & said they wern't worth stockin becauce they wern't doin any good ( catchin any in there nets) Them babies reproduce great in there if they would quit drawlin down the lake when the fish are on there spawnin beds & then get stranded in mud.  Atleast they saved money on stockin so mother nature good do her thingy.

thanks again for the info. very helpful. maybe will see u out there then. I am chompin at the bit. would gladly meet up at the creek. will pm , later and thanks again. I think I will go heavier and use the 12lb like u mentioned until I understand the fight of these fish once they spot me, if I hook one.

Has anyone done anything over the dam this year?  I haven't had a chance to fish muddy creek where it comes out of the lake recently, and was just curious if anyone else has.

I fished it a couple weeks ago to get out of the house.  Didn't do any good.  It was pretty high though.  Also a couple more trees down across it since last year.

It should be good for the next 6 days with this colder weather. After that alot will be in full spawn & not want any parts of lures or bait for a week or two. Still can catch the pre/post spawn fish though. Headin' upstream on Fri. with a buddy & two or 3 ov my boys.

To remove odor, wash your hands with a bit of toothpaste
after you clean fish; rub toothpaste on dull metal spoons
and spinners and they shine right up.

  Mike,

tell me about it, you gonna hit the 50 mark this year or next? At least the toothy critters will have bright & shiny teeth.

Crappie, nice fish from a few notes up there, good pics.

Glad to see everyone is coming back to the message board as the season comes. I'll bet everyone is just ready to go and get the heck out of the house...

Was so itchy to fish went out at noon and managed to hook one bass while trying for pike. another guy close by saw a pike while fishing for the crappie. the water was fairly clear. several guys out that day. no one else landed anything. cant wait for the waters to warm a little more. was hoping to finally run into the infamous crappiefisher. went home for a bit and came back out. another bass was landed. fished till the big light went out. had a few more bites but landed nothing else. hoping next week will allow me to fish some more. work gets in the way of the important things, what a bitch!!.

That's my reputation allright . Tim & I just got done fishin' it a little while ago. WOW!!!, was it windy down there. Pike seem to love wind though. The rd. beds were purdy muddied up from the whitecaps & there was a wall of wind blown surface slush on the edge of the lake ice.

The only place that I have ever fished is, generally speaking, the west side of the lake.  Now, without giving away anyones  "hot-spots," what is the easiest way to get to some good areas on the east side of the lake?  I actually live in Cranberry, and was just curious.

Thanks.

Slayer -
The easiest way is to live on the lake like the select few lucky ones on this board...  I guess getting a structure map might be easier though. That will show you some structure, and the contour of the lake.  Also shows some trails, but the state ones seem better for this.  If you have a boat, this will show all of the launch sites.  If you are on foot, try to find a few places that look good on a map, and move around until you find what you are looking for.  The lake has so many different species, you would likely be best off figure what you want to catch first, then do some research on that species, then find something that matches that on the lake.  Just be aware, that this lake gets a ton of pressure, so following all of the "book" techniques doesn't work, be creative on approaches.  If you live in Cranberry, you have the most important factor though.  Being able to get time in on it.

Pork-

I actually have a blue-print of the lake luckily enough, really truly one of the ones used during the construction of the lake way back in the day.

It's just that trying areas like "duck pond" and such sound really good to me....and sadly I generally don't have any idea as to the routes to take to get there....but no biggie.

Either way though, thanks for the information!

Really, like I said, I'd like to learn more about catching Pike.  As is, I do well for Tigers out of the creeks, so I just wonder whether the east side of Arthur is the way to go for Pike, or should I foll the same type of Tiger Musky patterns, and hit the creek on the west side near McDaniels.

Sounds great, hopefully I can get a pike or two to hit.

On that note, I have a handful of Rapalas at my disposal...always been a fan of Shadraps really, think its something worth giving a shot?

  PS,

give spinners & a swimbait or two a try for a little bit. Think it's callin' for a purdy windy day so dress for it. The bite was very good today/night for nice sized fish L/M, Crappie & some Pike.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the advise guys, but sadly, only one fish to show for the day...and that was out of muddy creek (oh...and it was a carp).

As is, the North winds just screwed everything up...better luck next week maybe!

I was down at The Muddy Creek arm today for 2 hours. Managed 2 small crappies. Talked to a fella pulling his canoe out. Said he caught a small pike and 7 decent bass. He said the fish shut down when the wind picked up. All his fish were caught in the creek channel out in the lake.

Finally got the boat out on the water today.  Did some exploring in the Muddy creek arm.  Really nice looking stuff.  Never fished it from boat after the 528 bridge.  Saw some fish but couldn't get anything to bite.  Next time will be a lot more fishing and less exploring.  Did do my good deed for the day and took a bath getting a goose free of a foot trap.  No tags on it, but then I guess if it belonged to a legal trapper it probably wouldn't still be out there.  I couldn't believe the water was that warm already.
