Status: offline 		Allan ties his duns with a homemade dubbing, pinkish with a bit of orange and yellow.  He uses natural mallard flanks for wings and light dun for hackle and tail.  Emergers, you can use deer hair.  I personally like cdc.  Web wing can be good for spinners as well as one light dun hackle.  Red or orange butt on the spinner.   White or light dun microfibets for the tail. 

For nymphs, you'd want to go olive brown or olive.  I particularly like olive brown.  A rust brown will work too.  Pheasant tail fibers or mallard flanks will work for tails.  Pheasant tails can do the job as well.  Here's a pic of a few bugs.

Status: offline 		The sulphurs on the little J are an orangish-pink color. I dont know what Allan puts in the dubbing he has us tie with, but I know it works better than anything else i've used.

Tie your sulphurs with light dun hackle or cdc, and the spinners with clear z-lon or light dun hackle clipped at the top and bottom. I like to use olive-brown dubbing for the nymphs. Days before the sulphur nymphs emerge they have an amber tint to them. I dont worry too much about replicating this color, but it may work well.

Status: offline 		If we dont get any significant rains from today through sunday, we should be fine. I'll be driving past it a couple more times this week, and will likely fish a day before sunday if the level comes down some. I'll keep us updated.

Status: offline 		orange on sulphers don't work everywhere though. at least not up at the kettle. during a major big hatch to get your fly noticed by rising trout is to tie on one size bigger or add a something different, color, about your fly to draw attention to it. even twitching it when it hits the water first helps. ~dt

Status: offline 		When standard dries don't work for me I use emergers. Comparadun does well, or a spinner pattern.

Theoretically if the standard fly is tied & fished correctly the body color or even the absence of it does not matter. It's more of man catching thing.

Status: offline 		so what you're saying that if you're imitating the sulphurs around you adding a different shade or color shouldn't give you better performance. i think thedrake just proved this is not so from his experience and i also agree. if there are a ton of trout rising and you are using exactly the same imitation as the flies at hand how is the trout to select yours over a natural? if it's by luck, i'll have a better chance by adding something different to draw his attention. proven fact by my account and others i've fished with. this is my opinion on observation!! ~dt

Status: offline 		I agree with Marinaro to a certain extent. I believe when it comes to light colored mayflies such as sulpurs and cahills, color is important. With darker mayflies like bwo's and slate drakes, color is a little less important as it seems to be harder to differentiate color shades in darker colors. I seem to be able to get away with a #18 adams during the baetis hatch, but know a #18 sulphur wouldn't do the trick.

Didn't Marinaro say the order of importance is "presentation, presentation, presentation, size, color." I definitley agree with that statement.

Status: offline 		Anyhow Marinaro was just saying if you tie & fish the dun/sub amigo correctly the only thing that touches the water are hackle points & the tail. The body makes no contact & is of no value. The fish cannot see it. The important things are wing height & that the hackle points leave the same footpring on the water as the natural.
Now if you're fishing an emerger or spent pattern color is important because like the natural the body is in the surface film & not riding high on it as the Sub Amigo does.

I mostly fish a spinner (not spent) pattern or emerger. The standard dun doesn't do as well, but I'm always loaded with all the options & in different colors.

Please note I'm not saying I totally believe this, or I wouldn't have spent a few years coming up with my own colors. I started using Orange before I read or heard about it from anyone else...
Not that I claim to know anything. I just like to catch fish now & then.

Status: offline 		salmot, have fun with the ferret. i had one but they are nosey and get into eveything but fun to watch.
my main point is that when there are flies all over the water and fish are rising everywhere i feel i must use something that gets the fishes attention to my fly than the others, thus make mine bigger, twitch it or add a color change for them to focus on mine than another.
i understand what your saying about marinaro, but i feel color on duns, or shades, do make a difference to selective trout especially. i also use parachutes and quill body flies when the going gets tough on selective trout.

Status: offline 		I've never used a para. while fishing Sulphers. That certainly would be another great option. On a recent trip to the South Holston in Tenn. the only thing I could get a bump on was a tiny black para. (there was a little black midge hatch). I couldn't get a fish on anything else. Thanks for reminding me.

The ferret should be fun. Seems harmless enough.

Status: offline 		about the ferret, eventually you'll have to trim its claws and they're tough to hold while doing this.
we got one of the hanging hammocks for it's cage and he loved it.
back to fishen,
the older i get the better i like parachutes, eisier to see them, (lol), and puts the body in the water. i tried different ways to tie them but finally got a knack for tying them in my own way and i don't get fustrated anymore. ~dt

Status: offline 		The ferret came with a 4 tier cage & two hammocks & many other things. They had 600 invested & we got her for 100. We just had her out for about an hour.
The para I used down South had a foam post & cdc around it for the para. It knocked the crap out of them. I wish I knew how to do them.

About this weather- I'm tired of it! Last year I missed the Sulphers because of surgery on the casting arm. Every time I want to go this year it's either raining or cold. I know it's still early (best in June here), but i need to make up for last year too.

Lets make a list of items we should bring.

I'll bring a case of dogfishhead IPA, and a table we can eat on.

I don't know how any river in PA can be fishable right now, down here in VA we got 4.5" of rain between Sunday and Monday and now we are getting another 1 to 1.5" of rain tonight. I did catch some nice bass today in a 3 acre pond but it was high and rather muddy. The rivers and creeks around here are still raging torrents and with this rain, they'll be back to being a complete mess! Perhaps you all got a little less rain than we did down south...

Status: offline 		We lucked out here in the Poconos. We got the rain as well but it was steady so the water is higher but not blown out.

I went to the creek near my house this evening and there were grey foxes coming off! I didnt do my homework this winter and was caught with my pants down. Didnt have any flies that big or light colored. So caught one on a pmd comparadun. And one on a Adams.
