fubu2005 -> In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 10:16:50 AM)

I don't know what any of you think about this issue but i gonna take a swing at it! Trout fishing is my life and i'm sure a lot of you would disagree on that for yourself but lets just keep trout as the main topic here. Every year the PFBC loads the streams and lakes with huge trout and lot of em...and usually opening day can be a pretty big thrill when you see one of em. After opening day is over, i rarely see another large trout swimming around until next year. Why does the PFBC stock all most all of them for opening day and they put in 95 % of the Palominos as well? I think it would be wise to spread them throughout the two or three in-season stockings and that might keep fisherman out longer and possible attract more especially those who hate large crowds. I know some of you think I need to explore more but I do that all the time...I will run up and down miles of water searching for them. I just think it would be nice for a lot of us to head out to a stream or lake and help with a stocking or just simply fish and know that there is something big swimming out there. I love to see those big ones swimming and it gets my heart pumping and I guess thats what "makes my day!"

Dream Catcher -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 10:30:14 AM)

Its the ones I don't see that gets my heart pumping ! LOL < You never know what you're gonna catch on bigger water that gets stocked. I did see the results on the first in season stocking of little buffalo creek Tues . April 14th . They put atleast 6 golden rainbows in btwn 4-12lbs. You just never know I believe it is luck of the draw. Two years ago I saw a 4+ lb Golden on Tionesta Creek during a July float trip ! You can't base it on the small water that gets fished out quick ; try some big water ; granted the fish are harder to locate but thats what the sport is about . I do wish they'd put more fish into the streams that will support them year round.

D-nymph -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 11:59:41 AM)

I trout fish alot.  I guess I just never understood what the diference is between a trout that's yellow, brown, has a pink stripe or not.  They are all trout.  Some are big, those are nice, and most are small.  But what's the "special" attraction to the golden rainbows?  They are just yellow trout?  Why do people get so riled up over them?

aranbp -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 1:31:16 PM)

I fish some larger streams thoughout the year and while most are small I always see some big ones.  I usually do not catch them but it gets me going.  I think you need to fish some bigger streams.  As for stocking them for 1st day.  Thas when 90% of the fishermen are out.  After 1st day most do not fish again.  the big fish are just more visable then to because thats when most get caught.  I think guys like the yellows just because they are different.  I will take the browns anyday.

fisherofmen376 -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 4:35:56 PM)

Yellow trout are special because...they're special!  I've caught hundreds of rainbow and brown trout, but still never caught a yellow one.  For me it just comes down to uniqueness.  There just aren't that many palaminos out there, so catching one I guess is rare and kinda cool, at least for me it would be.

At the end of the day though, as long as I catch SOMETHING, I am happy.  There are even days when I catch nothing and Im happy, though that doesn't happen as often[:D]

CATMAN610 -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 4:39:40 PM)

Well It seems to me they put alot,,,well they actually do put alot less, trout in-season which would lead me to believe big ones would be less as well as average sized trout.

Sportsmans clubs seem to put larger fish in,,if you happen to know of any in your area.

centerpin_drift -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 5:44:34 PM)

Yeah i seen some posted about little buffalo about the size of trout that they put in their. First of all yes they did put some dam nice trout in that creek. But the sad thing is the poachers and snaggers had at them to easily, i fished that creek from the 14th until the 20th and caught alot of fish but nothing over 18 inches, But i would see the Joe blow using a rooster tail  right besides me and catch nothing i move and come back 20 mins later their he is bragging about his 12lb palie that he caught. B.S  Come on if you guys can't catch them fair and square hang your rod on the wall stay the f%$# at home. I am using a fly rod tie all my own flies and do quite well any day of the week but when i am standing their fishing for a big bow or a paile for hours throwing every fly pattern i have and not even getting a hit, and some jag off comes in a slams a big palie on a rooster tail and when i see the rooster tail buried in it's side that's B.S. I liked to Bury a rooster tail your A@@ see how it feels.

FisHMaNning -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 6:02:13 PM)

u know i noticed one thing, they stock decent sized trout early in the year to sucker people into fishing more, i went out to this lake by my house for the second stocking and was disgusted, i didnt see one fish over 9 inches, it was pathetic. atleast the on first stocking u can catch  13 inch fish. its a joke.

Kokanee Killer -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 7:35:38 PM)

the funny thing about goldens is they sometimes make a fisherman better, lett me explain.how many times a person sees a palomino in heavy heavy water casts to it only to catch a series of rainbows browns etc right next to it , hey it made me a better stream fisherman when i was younger,by the palomono revealing holding water i would passed by to fish easier water!!

Livinfishin -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/29/2008 7:38:33 PM)

They put plenty of big fish in during the regular inseason stockings.  I fished the DHALO section of Loyahanna creek this past saturday and I caught 4 fish over 15 inches and lost a brown that was close to 20.  That section was stocked this past Wednesday.  Part of the problem is that most of the stockings are announced now and the bucket fishermen that follow all the trucks around all week usuaully clean out alot of the big fish that are stocked.  If you want your shot at bigger fish, fish any of the DHALO or DHFFO sections that are stocked.

Loomis -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/30/2008 8:15:06 AM)

"If you want your shot at bigger fish, fish any of the DHALO or DHFFO sections that are stocked."

True words.  Def have taken some big fish out of both areas well before/after spring stocking, they are there if you fish for them.

It seems the board gets a sharp rise of negative opinion around the first day of trout.  This is about the 4th time Iv'e said it but It cant be helped with all this complaining about small fish, no fish, not enough fish, the fish aren't spread out, theres too many people in my hole, the fish commission hates us, they dont stock where they say, they stock less, the list just keeps getting bigger.......im sick of it and im sure others are too but in all honesty we still have to make do with what we are given. Did you ever think about if the Fish Comm. didn't stock fish?  Then what would any of us do who like to trout fish?  Im Greatful to have any trout dumped in, 5 inches or 30 inches.

But heres a little spotburning for ya if you wanna catch the big one.  http://www.laurelhilltroutfarm.com you can park, stand in a circle and catch as many as you want without having to walk...and get this, the water is treated so you cant see the fish!  youll never know when that big one will hit...

bubba-jet -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/30/2008 4:33:55 PM)

"...I will run up and down miles of water searching for them. fubu2005 "
Try walking or better yet stalk them and maybe you'll see more , If You can see them they saw ya coming ,the smart ones are long gone .
Loomis your brilliant ! FishHogs unite ! in a circle at the Hatchery, what a nice picture that would make.

Mikastorm -> RE: In season stocking issues! (4/30/2008 10:45:44 PM)

No catch and release there. 3.25 a fish.  200.00 for gas. What a deal!

gizmos -> RE: In season stocking issues! (5/1/2008 7:36:00 AM)

Table 2.  PFBC 2008 adult trout production goals.

HATCHERY
ADULT TROUT
TOTAL ADULT
PRODUCTION
TOTALS
560,495  Brook
912,855  Brown
1,959,335 Rainbows
8,715    Golden Rainbow
3,441,400  Total

This is why !!! Look at the total that they raise. Its a rare fish compared to the mass production of the other three .

THAT'S WORKS OUT TO BE ONE OUT OF EVERY 394 FISH RAISED IS A PALIMINO.

I know they are "rare".  It still makes no difference to me if a trout is yellow, blue or has a pink stripe.  I don't see what the big deal is about a cartoon yellow fish.  More power to you if it gets you all worked up.

Thanks for the capital letters too.  That helps me understand your perspective!

JEB -> RE: In season stocking issues! (5/1/2008 2:24:18 PM)

I'm glad you don't care about them, its less pressure on a highly pressured fish. The caps were just to prove a point as to why people get worked up about them, becuase there a not that many. I personally would want to catch a Tiger trout rather than a palimino, I think there are less of them and this is the last year the state will stock any. You posted a question asking why people get all worked up over these fish and then you get defensive, You asked the question, not me.  I've caught over 15,000 trout since the mid 80's and have only ever caught one golden rainbow . I spend a lot of time on the water and they are hard to catch, thats why people like them, plus the state usually only stocks them @ 17+ ", so they are bigger. I'm not condoning you for your trout preference, I love them all, but if people want to spend hours trying to catch one, you should be happy, the time that they are wasting on one fish allows you more time to catch more of your non cartoon fish.

I'm not complaining, I was just asking a question.  When people use bold type, exclamation points and all caps on message boards, it typically denotes yelling.  Why wouldn't I get defensive when someone responds to the question with what is commonly understood to be yelling about a simple question?

Livinfishin -> RE: In season stocking issues! (5/1/2008 10:55:07 PM)

I have never really understood the obsession with Palamino trout either.  Gimme some nice brookies or browns anyday over a Palamino.

JEB -> RE: In season stocking issues! (5/2/2008 9:02:55 AM)

I was just trying to get the point across that they are much more rare then the average stockie. I did not intend to imply anything other than that in the style of font. They are a rare fish and people will do stupid things to try to catch one and some even become obsessed with them.
Thats all I was trying to get across, I thought maybe you were unaware of the toatal numbers raised compared to the other three.

Got My Pole Wet -> RE: In season stocking issues! (5/2/2008 9:17:40 AM)

I see jebs point exactly great post don't see where the offense was taken.

I love to fish for trout and like catching all variations but if you catch one that is not very common then all the better.

JEB -> RE: In season stocking issues! (5/3/2008 12:24:51 AM)

Check out the photo of the possible new state record golden and you see why people go bonzo over them......

CATMAN610 -> RE: In season stocking issues! (5/3/2008 9:38:39 PM)

I was at a creek today that a sportsmans club stocked and they had little 10-11 inch paliminos all over the place.
They didn't bite a thing, saw no one with one, and all they do is dart around the holes stirring up all the other fish. They are more of a nusance to me I wish they'd get rid of those and just stick with the much nicer brookies that we were catching 14-15 inchers. They could never stock another one of those the rest of my life and I'd be fine with it.

hoch999 -> RE: In season stocking issues! (5/3/2008 11:17:19 PM)

in reply to your questioning the differences on trout, i must surmise that while you fish a lot for trout, you must not pay too much attention to the nuances as to how you're catching these trout, because there are significant ones. such as, while you can catch browns on powerbait, you'll have much better sucess using what i call 'meat', i.e. minnows, worms, maggots, waxwoems and grubs. rainbows hit powerbait ans salmon eggs much better. also you can anger a normal rainbow, brown, or brook into striking, not so with the 'golden' rainbow they are very stubborn fish at times, and generally strike only when the mood hits them

Compare the number of miles of put-and-eat streams w/ delayed harvest and flyfishing only waters. How many of u would like to see the DH and FFO designated streams increase in number and coverage? That would keep more big trout of ALL types in the water longer into the season

I'd love to see more DH sections but the PAFBC won't sell liscenses that way since a lot of the guys who only go out once or twice a year don't seem to like them and they (the PAFBC), like many other states, seem to base almost their entire operation on selling trout stamps.

I for one wouldn't mind if they stopped stocking trout all together. It'd keep the meat hunters off the streams since natives won't hit 10lb test and they wouldn' be able to load up buckets. Most guys who strictly target trout around me only fish DH waters or small unknown streams for natives/ holdovers as the average stockie isn't exactly hard to catch. Trout fishing is all about the challenge to me, and I don't mean the challenge of trying to get a fish to hit as 5 guys walk into the hole you're fishing on opening day.

shemanese -> RE: In season stocking issues! (5/7/2008 1:27:53 PM)

I'd like to see more emphasis put on watershed protection and increasing the quality of our aquatic resources rather than more special regulation areas.

It seems to me that the energy put into more special regulation areas would be better spent making the streams better. Plus, I have found that if one looks for them, one can find trout in most of the regular streams throughout the year. I've even surprised myself a few times. So I am not a big advocate for delayed harvest, FFO etc.

My ideal arrangement would be totally open year round trout fishing on well protected waterways. That'd be a big change in the paradigm in PA but I don't believe it would be a bad thing like some might.
