Went today with a buddy of mine to the mountains.We went to setup half up the hill this coyote starts barking then one strats howling.We went from hunting turkeys to hunting coyotes we messed with them for 30 minutes they won't come in so we moved on to the ridge.We heard 3 gobble but to far to go after.So we tried some run and gun we had 2 to go after in one spot they wouldn't shut up.We setup on him he did 360 circle on us come in to the field then hunged up.I thought he was 40 yards but was a little further then that i shoot he just jumped an flew away.So we setup on another bird down the road there were 9 longbeards running together we watch them walk through the trees to far to shot.We changed our setup fought with two hens for twenty minutes will watching this big boy strurt his stuff.My buddy belly crawled through the weeds will i called he text me when he got setup we both started calling. Here them came all 9 of them in single file line.He shoots i thought he killed but he just knock one down.All well even do we didn't kill we had alot of fun.The birds were real fired up today weren't they?

I can't criticize... I remember being a young lad in NY when I missed 5 birds straight in three days and not one was over 30 yards. I was shooting Federals which I had not patterned (but the box looked cool and I figured they had to be deadly, later I learned that they hated my gun and no Federal has seen the inside of my barrel ever since.. Dirty, Rotten no good Mother.. Sons'a b.... I'm sorry did I go on a tangent). I reverted back to Winchesters which had served me well and killed two within the next two trips. I probably knocked down the next twenty (who knows) and then I would miss one... This year, I missed one opening day at 45 yards. I know this seems long to some, but it is a chip shot for my combination. Still, I would have waited till they came closer but little league was calling and I did not want to be late for my kids' games... The next two birds, ended up dead as dead can be. I guess the moral is (in the words of Forest Gump) "Sometimes Sh!t Happens" (sorry moderator). Oh well, Chicken sounds like you had a good hunt. One thing I have learned is that generally your misses are as memorable if not more so than the hits... Griffon

Funny Griffon, before I went to hevi shot, federals were the cat's A$$ in all my shotguns.

By the way has anyone read about the new flight control wad that federal has developed, they are practically guaranteeing double the bb's in the kill zone.

I use a mag 10 with Winchester #4 copper shot. As with Griffon 40 yds is a dead bird. My very few non kills have been the ones that got in too close and the pattern was too tight resulting in a complete miss or a dead tree. Yesterday was an active day for us too.

I saw 5 different gobblers this AM all fanned out on Route 43 from Monogahela to the end of 43 by the large hotel. Oh and in that same stretch I saw one that didnt make it across the road.

Now all I need to do is figure out a way to get in there after them birds. See at least 1-2 birds every day. Today was the most I have seen at 1 time. And they were all spread out, but some still did have hens with them.

I really blew it this morning....

Got one to gobble at around 5:45 am in the rain. I made the mistake of thinking he was further away than he really was. I was thinking about 200yds, but he was about 100yds away. He flushed from a tree about 20yds away from where I was standing.

I figured i'd give him some time and get a little closer to where he flew, wait about 15-20 minutes and start calling. He gobbled immediatley just as soon as I called. I quieted down, and just purred and clucked, he gobbled some more......Then the rain started pouring, and I was running out of time. Maybe i'll get 'em on monday when I make it back out.

Have any of you guys had luck calling a bird that you bumped?

S-10 i got a rangefinder he was in a field looking our way so i couldn't get it out of the vest.I didn't hit mine i just plan missed him at 68 yards.(ranged after the shot)

a hen stole my gobbler this morning

but i did get a great view of a bunch of crows fighting a biggg owl, they were 20 yards on the ground infront of me, it carried on for about 5 mins

WHAMOOO! Layed one out at 8 yards this morning. The 3 hens came out of the roost from behind me. This one only gobbled 4 times on the roost and never after he hit the ground. The hens popped out in the field about 80 yards from me. I started glassing them and Lightning strike me dead if I am a liar, but there was a bearded hen in that group with a 8-9 inch beard. I looked at her for a good long time with the binos and I am certain it was a hen, anyway..... So just as I am adjusting to that shock here comes the gobbler struttin down the edge of the field. Walked right to my jake decoy and attacked. The big 10 ga. roared and now we are having turkey dinner tomorrow.

I hate getting up that early every day,,,,,,,,but I love shootin turkeys.....

Finally got to get out again since wednesday.My old man called me at 4:15 am today said it was raining to hard so we decide to go out a little bit later.Got down to our spot in washington county we walked for a mile an spotted 7 gobblers by themselves.No matter what called i throw at them they just wouldn't gobble.I worked that spot for 40 minutes but could yank there lips apart.So the sneak attack was on with the woods been wet and the noise from route 70 we was able to get around them.I came up over the knoll in the field to see 7 red telescopes sticking up.So i waited to catch my breathe then ranged them they were 57 yards.They were getting nervous 4 of them already ran out of sight so i click the gun off safety then wam the gobbler was down.I was a little disappointed when i went out to check him out.He only had a 3 and half inch beard.Oh well far as we had to walk to kill this bird i couldn't leave him slide.

Sounds like you need to learn a little patience. 68 yds and 57 yds ???? What is that ?? You can't shoot turkeys at almost 70 yds don't care what size gun or loads..

chicken, I'm glad you got a turkey but I must admit I'm a little disappointed in you. You have all the calls you mentioned, a blind, all the turkey gear, and you sneek up on one just so you can pull the trigger. With the description of your hunt, all you could see was heads. What would you have done of you walked up and that bird had no beard? I've seen plenty of juvenile birds that had red heads and no visible beard, not to mention the distance of the shot.

Guess I'm old school.....I like challenge of fooling the birds and getting them to come to me. I just can't ever see myself bushwhacking one just so I could say I got one.

Well, my turkey season is done this year. Shot this 22 lber yesterday morning at 11:44. About an 11 or so inch beard with around 1 1/4" hooked spurs

My buddy hunts with a REMINGTON 11-87 model with HEVI-SHOT he says he will kill one every time at 70 to 75 yards or is he lying?As for ready2fish statement the more i think about what i did the more pissed i get at myself i shot a 12lb jake to end my season.I know so many spots that hold alot bigger birds then that(have no clue why i did it).I'm self-employed we owned a mechanics garage so getting up every day at 4:15 then working till 7:00 pm then go back out at that night to put them to bed gets old fast.I will agree with you ready2fish i never act like this an apolgize also bingsbaits i do need to learn more patience but how?I don't understand when i'm bow hunting i can sit dark till dark but not turkey hunting.I guess because i'm in a treestand an it would to much effort to get down an reset up.

Patience comes with time chicken..

As for your buddy saying he can kill every time at 70 yds thats BS. Have him get a turkey target and pattern at that range. Not enough BBs or penetration at that range.

In my younger days we'd shoot out to 50 yds. Now it's the challenge to see just how close I can get them to come in. As you found out by whacking a Jake and ending your season. Sometimes it's more about the hunting than the killing.. Ideal season would be too smack him the last day of season. I understand the morning burn out. That's why we do most of our hunting now from 9-12. Alot easier on the body and the mind....

We hunt exclusively with bows now. Talk about frustrating trying to get drawn on a mature bird at 20 yds is tough..

The only thing is with that 9 to 12 hunt i got to be at work.I Can hunt That some days when work is slow(with gas 3.80 a gallon things have slow why down LOL).I still got to try to get the old man one.Do you think i can still call one in or just be patience an wait on one to come.Another question the last two times out all the gobblers are grouping back up does this mean the breeding phase is over and they're looking for compainship with each other to get ready for the summer?

bingsbaits i got a mossberg 835 with a COMP N CHOKE XXX-FULL choke in it.I shot federal premium turkey loads 3 and half inch with 6 shot.I pattern it at 20,30,40,50 at 50 yards i can put 18 bbs in the head and 10 in the neck but how much pentration does my gun have at 50 yards?Is there any way to figure this out .Also want to say i appericate all the info i received from all of you guys this year greatly appericated.

chicken, saw a seminar by turkey hunting legend Preston Pitman. He says there are 3 P's to turkey hunting success.

Practice, Persistance, Patience.......

Don't fret, every day in the woods you learn, each time you learn you get better, then all of a sudden one day everything falls into place and the anxiety goes away.

Keep practicing, reading, watching videos.

I'm must admit, I expected you to blast me for what I said. I'm impressed that you have looked back at your kill and feel you could have done better. That too teaches you something, next time your feeling desperate and feeling like doing something similar, remember the pissed feeling you have now.

Oh ya, your buddy telling you he can kill at 70 or 75 every time,,,,,,,BS!!!!!!!!

Being 0 for 2 with the first two birds should give you a clue. Yes, if you get a few lucky BB's in the head and neck at 70 yards(even farther) they are dead. The problem is with such a small target to hit usually without a crosshair scope, and with a ever widening shot pattern chances are you are going to body shoot him even if you miss the head. A body shot bird is eventually dead from gangrene but not recovered. Pattern your gun at 70 yards from hunting positions (sitting, kneeling, etc) at a turkey target and see how many you would cripple. The breeding is still on, Gobblers will often be together at times throughout the season. Jakes will often band together and stay out of the fray. Called in 2 birds for the 11 year old grandson Sat. He jerked at 20 yds and shot over the top.

Martin, VERY nice bird

For all invlolved in the conversation my 10 Ga. with heavi shot will put 18 pellets in the kill (head or neck) at 65 yards and they are still going through 1/4 in ply at that distance, so that is where I have drawn my line. I have never had to shoot it that far at a bird, but nice to know I could. Mine on thursday was at 7 paces....

i draw the line at 45 yards, i know my nova and hevishot will go out to about 60 without a doubt but i dont feel like running around after a turkey if something does go wrong..

I been wanted to buy a semi-automatic for a while now but don't want to spend that much for a gun.I looked at the remington sp-10 but it don't talk about turkey just about waterfowls.Would this a good turkey gun it's a 10 gauge 3 and half inch mag.Also is a scope easier to use then the tru glo sights?

Me and my buddy went out saturday, i called a jake in (estimated 4inch beard) my buddy shot and nocked it down so we got up and tryed to grab it and it tryed running away so he shot it again and nocked it over, then it got up and ran away again i had left my gun next to the tree so i tryed running it down, even thou it had 2 shots into it i could not even come close to catching it. when he shot it was about 25 yards away.i think this turkey was god or something because it wouldnt die.
