Guess i shouldnt have shut the alarm off this morning.

chicken27 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/4/2008 9:18:11 PM)

HOW EARLY WILL A BIRD RESPOND TO A LOCATOR CALL IN THE MORNING?WE GO IN AT 5:00 TO 5:15 BUT I WAIT TO BLOW THE OWL HOOTER WHEN THE SUN STRATS TO COME UP OR SHOULD I BLOW IT WHEN WE FIRST GET THERE?

ready2fish -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 8:05:14 AM)

They will gobble when they feel like it. I've had birds gobble as it is just starting to get light. Quite often by the time the sun comes up they are done.
As far as asking a time, that always changes, I'd say now that 5:30 or so is when I'm hearing the absolute earliest gobbles, most beginning around 5:40 to 5:45.

chicken27 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 8:14:11 AM)

WE ARE REALLY STRUGGLING THE LAST TWO DAYS WE CAN'T GET A BIRD TO GOBBLE FOR NOTHING.IS ANYBODY ELSE HAVING THIS PROBLEM?THEY WON'T EVEN GOBBLE ON ROOST.

cp13 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 9:20:05 AM)

i dont even hoot, i wait til the first bit of light and i start calling...

I blow on my owl hooter pretty early. The earlier you get one to gobble the better, since getting set up before daylight makes it less likely to bump a gobbler. I got a gobble at 5:10 am on saturday.

chicken27 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 1:19:35 PM)

I WAS WONDER IF ANYBOBT EVER TRIED THE WOODHEAVEN MOUTH CALLS?I ORDER SOME OF OF CABELAS THEY CAME IN TODAY MAN DO THEY SOUND GOOD.I ALSO ORDER SOME PAUL BUTSKIS CALLS TO BUT THERE IS NO COMPRASING BETWEEN THE TWO WOODHEAVEN SOUND TWICE AS GOOD.

griffon -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 2:34:21 PM)

You will need to try the Woodhaven's outside in the woods.  They have a totally different sound.  Also, you will want to see how the turkeys react to them.  Sometimes what sounds good to us may not to the birds (Woodhaven's are a loud call and difficult to tone down with the sounds you may desire to get).  As for Paul's, I would do the same but he builds his calls for the woods vs. for competition (which is what Woodhaven does).  Again, try them both and see how the birds react.  I like both companies but would select a Butski's in the field most any day.  I find Woodhavens to be good locators but I don't care for them when sealing the deal the last few yards and you really need to sweet talk an old tom.

chicken27 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 5:08:00 PM)

GRIFFON I GOT SO MANY MOUTH CALLS I KEPT TRACK WHATS WHAT.I WAS WONDERING HOW MAKES TJE BEST MOUTH CALLS FOR HUNTING?I CALLED MT DAUGHTERS BIRD IN WITH A MAD SHIPP-WRECK.BUT NOW THESE BIRDS AINT TALKING MUCH NO MATTER WHAT I DO.HOW CAN I GET THEM FIRED UP?I NEVER NOW THEY MADE MOUTH CALLS FOR COMPETION AND HUNTING THANKS FOR THAT INFO.

ready2fish -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 8:10:56 PM)

I use 1 brand of mouth calls.......Kill'r calls......made in Pleasantville PA and the call that Matt Vancise won the worlds on.
chicken27, the birds have been kinda quiet here too so don't fret. They go through phases of breeding. Sometimes they just have alot of hens around and don't gobble much. Could be hunting pressure too, like I mentioned before, you'll get it done, sounds like you've been around alot of birds, it's just gonna take a little time.

griffon -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 8:19:09 PM)

Some would argue that the Shipp Wreck was the greatest call ever made.  I would be hard pressed to argue that.  Darryl Shipp had a winner with that call and I don't know if it is even made any longer since MADD is no longer its' own entity.  Probably the best all around call is a good slate (Cody would be my personal favorite, but there are a lot of good ones on the market).  When you hear someone that is really good on a slate, your head will snap around in the blink of an eye to pay attention.  As for mouth calls, I have a couple manufacturers I turn to.  One is Chestnut Ridge in Ohio.  His calls have been the demise of a lot of birds and are used by several people that call in WTF events every year.  Another that I love but you will not hear much of is Adventure Game Calls in NY.  You may have seen the owner on a show or two now and then, but his true talent is building calls and killing turkeys.  His cutters are the best diaphragms you will ever use.  I generally don't expect them to last for many years as they are soft and seem to break down (not unlike the Shipp Wreck).  My feeling is that the birds you are hunting may have you patterned better than you have them patterned.  It may be time to employ a little stealth and patience.  Find the strutting zones, set up on them early, let a couple of soft yelps.  If you hear a gobble, sit tight and wait.  If you don't hear a gobble, sit tight and wait (he knows you are there).  You might let out with a soft set of yelps every once in a while (20-30 minutes), but give him something different and you might be surprised at what he does.  If his strutting zone is large fields, laying in the middle of the field, twenty yards from a hen decoy and remaining motionless might not be the worst option.  There is a good bet that noone has tried this (I know this works from first hand experience...).   Good Luck in the morning.

chicken27 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 9:15:46 PM)

READY2FISH I GOT A MATT VANCISE CALL TO BUT IT IS REALLY HEARD TO USE DO YOU HAVE THIS PROBLEM TO?MY FAVORITE IS BETWEEN A QUAKER BOY OLD NASTY HEN AND THE SHIPP-WRECK.ALSO I REALLY LIKE THE PRIMOS POWER CRYSTAL I CAN DO SOME REALLY SWEET PURRS WITH IT.

harryape5 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 9:49:05 PM)

Gobbled on the roost good this morning 5/5 Called in 22lb 11 inch beard watched him come for 90 yds never gobbled only putted and strutted Took almost 1/2 hour for him to cover 90 yds Gobblers on other ridge never stopped Gobbling even after shot.

cp13 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/5/2008 10:11:08 PM)

the only diaphragm calls i use are primos, theyre always controllable, as in, you can make it loud or quiet without any trouble like with quaker boy and stuff...

ready2fish -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/6/2008 4:58:01 AM)

griffon, I concur about birds having him patterned, guess that's what I meant by hunting pressure.
I also agree with a change in stragety........

ready2fish -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/6/2008 5:01:32 AM)

chicken, the call I use is not hard to blow. It is not the exact model Vancise used, just same brand. He now calls for a different company, I'm not sure which one. I don't follow the calling circut like I use to.
The call I currently use is 3 reeds of thin latex and 1 reed of thicker latex that has a bat shaped cut.
It makes the sweetest yelps [:)]

bingsbaits -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/6/2008 6:00:14 AM)

Birds have been quiet hear all week. Amish already have them call shy.

fishin coyote -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/6/2008 7:53:35 AM)

Chicken,
I also agree that the birds have you patterned and are now call shy. Try hunting them like deer in bow season. Just sit in the woods or near the strutting areas and wait for one to come by, DON'T CALL. Your not hearing any now so it will be no different if you don't see any. I'd also try sleeping in if possible and not go out until 9:00.
Mike

Ps Could you please turn off your caps lock. It will be easier to read your posts

chicken27 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/6/2008 9:12:25 AM)

We only hunt spots every 2 to 3 days apart could they still pattern us? We don't hunt them every day.We try different spots every other day i don't call alot at least i don't think so. I call like every 10 minutes apart with 4 yelps,3 yelps and 4 more yelps is this over calling to them?Then the next time maybe a yelp with a couple of clucks.

ready2fish -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/6/2008 9:33:42 AM)

I had a fun hunt this morning. Heard only 1 bird (they are really quiet here to!) and it only gobbled 4 times from 6:15 to 6:45. The last time it gobbled it wasn't much more than 100 yards away. At 7:30 I hadn't heard it for quite a while, decided to slowly stand up to strech my legs (may I add I wasn't calling much, couple clucks and purrs and soft yelps every now and again, tried a quick series of cutts but when that did not elicit a response I stayed with quiet calls) when I got to my feet I turned around slowly toward a field that was 40 yds behind me and DOH!!!! There is 2 hens right at the edge of the field and directly behind me. Somehow I got away with standing and they didn't see me. Low and behold I see a strutter behind them still in the field. I slowly crouch down beside the tree. The hens feed around for a little then come into the woods only 20 yds from me. The strutter follows them, I get my gun into a shooting position, he walks in, CRAP!!! It's strutting jake LOL......I let him walk down past me and depeer into the woods with the hens before getting up again. Wish I could stay out till noon, I really think this period of the spring is morning quiet and the 10-noon hunt would be the way to kill a big'un.

DanesDad -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/6/2008 3:05:01 PM)

They're real quiet around my house too.  I know from the numbers I've seen during the late winter that there are plenty of birds about.  But they're silent in the morning.  I doubt they've patterned me because I've only been out twice.  Plus, I dont call excessively (tho, I might sound so bad that the instant I call, every turkey in the valley knows it's me).  Gotta work a lot this week, may not get out at all.  Is turkey hunting a lot harder towards the end of the season?

S-10 -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/6/2008 8:14:33 PM)

It's harder because most of the noisy and dumb ones have been shot but your chances for a long spur are better as the hens start sitting. It's real quiet around here too but that's because the noisy ones are gone and the others have become a bit more cautious plus have the hens the dead ones used to have.

ready2fish -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/6/2008 11:50:01 PM)

Spoke with several other hunters in past 2 days, all have told me that gobbling activity is next to none for them also, even late mornings.
Looking at the forcast for next week it looks like some rain. That may spur the hens to sit more so eggs are not lost. Things may pick up soon.

griffon -> RE: NOT MUCH GOBBLING (5/7/2008 6:57:31 AM)

My PA season is now complete (number two is down)...  I got out early this morning on a small field edge where I roosted a bird last night.  I set a lone jake in the field 5 yards from me and set up with my crossbow (I have permission, but it is too tight for a shotgun blast to wake up the neighbors, LOL).  At 6:15 the bird pitched out into the field with two other longbeards.  I yelped once, and got quiet knowing they could see the decoy.  15 minutes later, they are standing at full strut, 15 yards away.  The Hammerhead tipped bolt struck the biggest of the three right where I aimed, nearly decapitating him.  He has 1" spurs, a 10 1/2 inch beard and weighs 20.5 lbs.  Nice bird and a good way to end the PA season.  FYI, there was nothing quiet about these three, they gobbled nonstop all morning and the two survivors started gobbling even harder when their comrade fell.  I went and got my bird quickly, because I really was not interested in watching the other two attack mine while he was down.   I guess I should go clean him now and then go to work.
