Heading to Altoona on Friday night to spend some time with the in-laws.  Plan on doing some fly fishing on Saturday morning till noon, so I need to stay close.  I see there's a FFO section on the Little J in Blair County.  Two questions...

- What color of sub-surface flies has been working on the Little J?
- I've never fished out this way, can anyone recommend another section of it, or different stream in Blair County?

You're going to have to watch water levels.  It's coming down fast now but with some rain, it may become unfishable.  Route 453 follows it a good ways.  Plenty of water there to pick from for a morning.  Subsurface, sulpher nymphs, caddis pupa will work.

Unless you want to catch mostly stocker rainbows and get crowded, i'd avoid the FFO section. It is nice water, but all of the little J is. If you are planning on fishing closer to Altoona, fish near Tyrone along 453. It is right off the exit on 220. The entire river has a great population of wild and fingerling stocked browns and is under catch and release regs.

You'll see little black caddis, and green caddis over the weekend when you are there, and likely some tan caddis. You'll likely see some bwo's and blue quills also. Underneath try sparkle pupas in green and brown (if you see some caddis emerging), caddis larva in green and tan, sulphur nymphs and bhpt's in 16 and 14.

If you want to get some hog browns, use a giant stone fly nymph #4 to #8 on a sink tip in the deepest green holes. Get down for the big browns!!! It works... if you don't have a sink tip use a 25 lb flat mono and weight the hell out it, just get to the bottom of the green holes. You will not catch numbers but you may catch a fish that will make the week end with the mother in law alot easier to tolerate.

Thanks guys.  I had a 2 hookups on your recommendations.  Ended up fishing a native stream that feeds the Little J, but they were way too smart for this newbie.
