I would also add that if there is landowner tensions in the area that is in question, then that area probably shouldn't be being stocked to begin with.  I have seen instances on other creeks in the area where trout were stocked and almost immeadiatley afterwards the land was posted.  To me it is best to avoid those areas all together in regards to stocking.

I don't ever recall there being as many guys fishing for bluegills years ago either, most guys never targeted them, or another comparison,,fewer guys archery hunted in years past too. The older crowd of fisherman aren't out there anymore. The younger generation is more willing to explore,,,times change and so do peoples fishing habits,,,we can't blame the internet.

griffon -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 7:59:18 AM)

You might want to check your statistics.  Hunting and fishing license sales have dropped significantly in this state compared to the "good old days".  Most of the time, you are correct however.  The internet is not to blame for overcrowding and shrinking public access, most of the time.  Unfortunately, this site condones (almost to the point of promotes) the listing of specific stream hole locations.  For every single reply to such a post, there are hundreds if not thousands of views.  Do you know all of the viewers? Do you trust them to treat the resources with respect?  There is no way that you can argue that posting specific spots is going to open up more public access (don't believe it... look at the Erie tribs).

aranbp -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 8:23:32 AM)

I beleive the internet leads to more people fishing spots.  I can agree with you on that.  I do not think that Hardcore really did anything wrong with his post.  The pics were nice,but they will not get me to drive up there and fish.  I am sure some might.  I think it is the people who leave there garbage and pi$$ in peoples bushes does more harm than anything.  If I am fishing an area similar to that.  I will park and walk in.  If I get there and the property owner is fishing with his familiy or the area is crowed I will move on and look for open water.  The bottom line to me is to respect the land owner.

CATMAN610 -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 11:17:44 AM)

I didn't say more people are hunting and fishing,,I said they are doing different kinds, focusing on species and different types of fishing. 20 years ago i never heard of so many guys willing to spend a whole day chasing bluegills? Catfish is another example, through the years people pick up new habbits, but stocked trout chasing is pretty much the same. As I said creeks with stockies will be practicly empty in a few weeks I don't think it will be from pictures on the internet.

griffon -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 12:10:38 PM)

Roflmao...  I love it when anglers make assumptions like that.  I am guessing that I will not be seeing you on the streams in a few weeks, since there will be no trout left.  [sm=banana.gif]

fewer guys archery hunted in years past too-  Ask yourself why...  Number one is the advance in technology, number two is the generous seasons, number three (and arguably most important) this is a way for many dedicated hunters to escape the sea of orange which has given all sportsmen a pretty bad image in the eyes of the public.  That is not a whole lot different than guys fishing delayed harvest so that they can get away from the opening week anglers who leave their crap along the streams and give all anglers a bad name.

20 years ago i never heard of so many guys willing to spend a whole day chasing bluegills-  BINGO... You didn't have the internet, so you didn't hear of guys chasing them.  That doesn't mean they weren't, it just means that you were unaware of them.

I am tired of arguing with you, as present absolutely ZERO valid arguements and know little of the waterways that are being discussed.

spoonchucker -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 12:40:23 PM)

I don't know how much loss of access, can be attributed to angler actions. No doubt there are still some slobs out there, and one can always offer some "anecdotal" evidence to the contrary. But overall I believe we have done a much better job of cleaning up after ourselves, ( and others ) in the past several years.

In ( my opinion ), it has more to do with a changing attitude nationwide. We live in a me, me, me, mine, mine, mine, society. It's mine, and nobody else can have, or use it. That's your/their right, but don't use excuses to make it anything other than what it is.

griffon -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 12:51:52 PM)

I don't know spoon.  While some of what you are saying is absolutely undeniably true...  I guarantee that I can go down to my local Creek tonight, walk the regular season stretch and pick up a garbage bag full of litter left by anglers.  Noone really pays attention there, due to it flowing through a congested area and not being the most scenic to begin with.  However, people who live on less populated streams that are more intune with keeping their properties nice and they have little tolerance for slob behavior.   The same is true with hunters.  Let one person cut a fence, ride an ATV with wreckless abandon, shoot a livestock animal and that property will be shut down quicker than a heartbeat to all but a very few fortunate individuals.  If you listen to landowners that do not give permission, a recurring theme occurs almost everytime and the blame is almost always aimed at the irresponsible actions of sportsmen.

FYI, I do enjoy discussions with you spoon (whether we agree or not) as you at least come to the table with valid points and well thought out arguements.

spoonchucker -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 1:05:32 PM)

Griff,

There is no arguement here, as I stated there ARE still SOME slobs. My own experience though, is that the streams/lakes are generally cleaner than in years past.

One also has to consider the surrounding areas, and the general make up of the trash collected. In recent clean-ups on Erie streams, I have noticed both a decline in overall amount, plus a decline in the percentage that can be directly tied to anglers. Much/most of it tends to be trah blown in, and washed down from roadways, and shopping mart parking lots. Of course landowners tend to connect what they can SEE, anglers/trash, anglers=trash. This is not always the case.

CATMAN610 -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 3:55:06 PM)

No you won't see me at a low, clear, creek where they are gonna drop in half-baked rainbows. They will be cleaned out in a few weeks because of the meat hunters who go there and keep all the trout they catch. There are other boards to talk about hunting. When I first heard of steelhead running in Erie there was no internet, just an uncle and his buddy. It doesn't take the internet to spread talk about fishing, when fish are biting people find out about it one way or another.

I'm not gonna get tired of arguing with you,,,I love it when people think they are right,,and I know better.

rsquared -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 6:35:12 PM)

Along the lines of what Spoon is saying, about 2 years ago a popular hole on a trout stream 1/4 mile from my house quit getting stocked because the landowner posted that section of stream.

Saw the local WCO one day and asked him what was up with the posting as I know that posted land doesn't get stocked.  The land in question is right around a bridge where it seems about every 3rd car (maybe an exaggeration) throws trash out the window.  According the WCO, the landowner was trying to blackball the Fish Commission into cleaning up the trash that passing motorists threw out their window.  Granted, there was the normal angler littering, but was usually picked up by me or some other anglers in pretty quick fashion.  WCO seemed pretty specific that the landowner was more upset with the year-round litter than the litter left by the opening week crowds, though I'm sure that had something to do with it.

[;)]hey cat man before you take this the wrong way, remember no one of us knows more than all of us,just my 2 cents and yes i do agree with you about the internet need not to blame for pressure increases at erie tribs,15 years ago when i first fished elk creek yes there was a lot less people,but world class steelheading is a hard secret to keep.internet or not

CATMAN610 -> RE: Mill Creek 4-20-08 (4/24/2008 8:05:25 PM)

I was just using that as a means to keep arguing,,,I mean keeping conversation going.  No offense meant
