BassinTom -> Is it the Year to get Skunked (4/20/2008 9:58:48 AM)

I was out Friday evening and all day yesterday not on the hunt for trout but on the hunt for anything that was biting.  I went to Kooser, Crannyberry Glade, Summerset lake, and Quemahoning Reservoir.  Seen tons of fish at all the lakes water was as clear as can be but nothing is hitting like it should be.  Friday at Kooser I saw one trout and one bass caught in a four hour time period, talk to one guy that was there all day till 6pm and he got nothing at all.

Yesterday I went out early to fish the later three waters for a while.  Crannyberry is always a producer this time of the year for pike, me and the wife spent three hours there and only had two strikes nothing landed.  Then it was off to Summerset lake for a few got their and fished only a short time water choppy and wind whipping a good bit.  Next it was off to the Que tried a few spots all around the lake and nothing at all one guy was there all day and nothing nor had he seen or heard of anything being caught.

So in conclusion is this going to be one of those years that happens every so often.  Good weather, clear waters but bad fishing across the board.  I remember back in the late 80's having a year start like this and stayed this way till early fall of that year.  Could this be another one of those types of years?

Could the fishing be like global warming or the el nino thing and this is why people are not catching as many fish?  I know their out there is just seem like people are not catching them no matter what they are using for bait be it live bait or artifical baits.

Whats you thought on this subject and I don't what to hear they are not stocking trout we have already addressed that to many times here on the board.

Ive been catching tons of trout. My only question is why would anyone sit somewhere all day long and catch nothing.

Me and my buddy have had a steller year so far.  we cought over 100 steelhead in 4 days of fishing, and the trout are a little slugish, but that may be due to a smaller stoking.  Were still catching a lot compared to the other anglers we talked to.

Trout fishing was great for me...right up until the season opened.  I was catching 2-3 trout in about an hour of fishing that I'd squeeze between work and class a few times each week.  It was great to be able to fish for just a short amount of time and still have a good chance at catching.  Since the opener, though, it seems that you've got to invest an entire day just to get a few fish.  I fished Sewickley Creek, the Loyalhanna (in two spots), and Lower Twin yesterday and ended up with 2 rainbows, a smallmouth, and a few bluegill to show for 8 hours or so of fishing.  And while I'm thankful for any catch, I must admit I was a bit disappointed.

Today I stopped by Mammoth, but didnt stay long as ignorant and rude people were afoot and the fish weren't biting anyway, and settled for a walk on a trail I know of nearby.  It's frustrating to me that the best fishing is out of season and that the official trout season just tends to leave a sour taste in my mouth, more because of the people around and the tactics for catching fish changing to 'chase the trucks', than the fish themselves.

So I guess I agree that the fishing is slow now, but I can say you should have seen it in late march, fishing was great.

I too don't know the reason for these reports of skunking, I don't think iv'e even come close to being skunked yet, even when the water was junk like today....  I guess trout get sick of size 6 snelled hooks with powerbait.  Switch to 4 lb flouro and small hooks perhaps.

I was out in march like you were Cold and I also did very well.  I have been out everyday since the trout opener but two and caught fish just not what I have caught in the past.
Hey on a side note today was a fishing derby at Mammoth so I stayed clear of there.  I was there on Thur. last week and did well but I was fishing spinner.  Got 2 bows and 2 bass.  no one using live bait was catching anything but gills so I felt good about my catches.
Was out today at the Que and caught a nice 4lb LM bass was only there for about two hours but did catch one at least.

Aha!  Well at least there's an explanation, if not an excuse...it just irks me when I feel funny about how close i am sitting to someone that was there before me...THEN two guys come and set up in between us!  If the derby was for kids, people needed to let the kids do the fishing instead of letting them go play in the mud while they fished...

I sent you one on the bigdamfish site also. Maybe the message just got lost.

luvinbluegills -> RE: Is it the Year to get Skunked (4/21/2008 2:22:08 PM)

I've had a better than average year so far, and one thing that I have noticed is that the best bite is coming with a choppy wind. The wind dies, the bite dies. Dunno why, but that's been my experience so far.

Trout fishing has been banner so far. Over 200 hundred trout caught and released so far but i also have been fishing first day till now everyday of the week. I would say a majority of my trout took black stone flies, a few on buggers, and some on Pt nymphs and Hares ears. The fishing has slowed down alot their are still trout to be had, Their taking dry's  right now Was killing them on Saturday afternoon while the bait  fisherman was watching, what can i say priceless.

Hey cold that was a derby for anyone that wanted to join at no cost.  The Westmoreland county parks put it on, I figured it was more of a kid thing but some adults just don't get it I guess.  I mean nothing wrong with going and giving it a try but some of the people act like they are at the BassMasters Classic and I can't stand that at all.

Hey Luvinbluegills have to agree with that one also the wind and choppy water has been my pal this year too.  But I have alway been a guy that likes the stained water or at least the dark green water to fish in.  Seem the fish spook to easy when the water is crystal clear and bright and sunny.

Any way glad to hear of so many guys and girls catching fish so far.  I know everywhere that I have gone the live bait guys just don't seem to be doing to well.[sm=icon_cool.gif]
