No, I do too, just haven't been out yet.

Id like to but I dont trust picking and eating something i can kill if the wrong one is picked. Ill stick to shiitake and portablellas .

That is what I was trying to do Kevin, thanks.

I can relate to that too Kyler. The ones I go for are pretty distinctive looking. The morels, sheepsheads, chantarelles, and sulpher shelfs are about the only ones I'll pick and eat. Others that are too close to call just stay on the ground and get photographed.

peteM, Nice picts.,Do you have any good picts. of sheepheads that you can share? I have tried google but the picts. that I found were not clear enough for me. I would like to see one before it is cut off also.  thanks   sam

I do have some pics of the sheepsheads as they typicaly occur, but I'll be darned if I can post in this forum. If you'd like, I can e-mail them via yahoo as attatchments.

On the taste of morel,it's kind of hard to describe. Sort of a light floral hint followed by subtle woody/mushroom flavor. Like the smell of fresh woods, just on your tounge. Wierd.
I cook them at the recomendation of most experts. It is said that they may cause some type of "discomfort" when eaten raw.

PeteM,Thanks for your patience & answers.I will quit bothering you after these ?? Do they have to rippen til Oct., What happens to the ones that don't get picked,do they die or just get bigger? My friends say that the ones that they find after Oct. get dry & wormy. Also I am told that you should slice them off of stumps & leave part intact so that it will regrow.   sam

I dont know that they rippen much. They seem to blow up out of the ground pretty quickly, like within days. There are a couple in those pics that have come up and grown right through with twigs and leaves inside of them.  The down side is that they will get buggy fast. I haven't ever gotten one that wasn't a bit buggy, so I soak them in water for a minute and flush out the critters.
I've never seen one go bad, but they get decimated by insects in no time at all. Part of their method of spore dispersion is by insects spreading them. They have a good flowery fragrance that attracts fruit flies, which dig in and carry away spores.
On harvesting them, Yea, I cut them off at the base. Some sites will produce for a very long time. I have several that have been consistently productive for at least the past seven years. I wouldn't know how pulling them out will affect them because I was taught to cut them off.

Thanks for showing an interest. It's been a realy fun hobby of mine, and if you get a kick out of it, I'll share what I know.(except the sweet spots)

they usually come up after a rainy day. They need dark, moisture, a certain bacteria (I cant recall the name), and warmth to grow. If you dont get them fresh after a rainy day, they will get buggy and grow bacteria that can make you sick. Morels come up and then decompose quickly, they dont continue to grow. All you need to know to figure out how to find them is that you need to know what they need, as i stated above. Just like you would hunt anything living you need to know the habitat they need. good luck.

Nightowl207, have you personaly picked any sheepheads this early in the year? I always thought that they were only picked in the fall.   sam

Was wondering if anyone ever had ther brainchild to, and success in training a dog to sniff them out. Dogs can cover woods alot faster than us.

Went to one of my best spots, to find that strip miners, have laid waste to it.

I don't see why a dog couldn't be trained to sniff them out. They can pretty much sniff anything out with the proper training.

Spoon, I believe they use dogs in Europe to find Truffles so I'm sure they could be used to find Morels.
