pgh_flytier -> Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/18/2008 9:42:45 PM)

although I missed opening day on the Loyalhanna I managed to take a day off work Friday and go up. spent the whole day there, fished from longbridege to Kingston Dam with no luck. Didn't cathch anything, no hits, didn't see any being caught. Are they putting fewer trout in than they used to? I not only didn't see any signs of life, there were few fishermen. Where are the fish and the fishermen? Has anybody else experienced a decline in the fishing in this strech of creek?

There are fish in there year round. It was a really bright day and after loads of pressure they may have just been hugging cover.

Jonesin -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/18/2008 11:51:18 PM)

I usually hit the hanna behind Latrobe Steel.  Not too many people there since it's not easily accessable.  The creek is about 5-10 feet wider than it was last year due to wash-out, and is still moving pretty fast.  From opening day til weds, I caught a total of 2 fish.. a bluegill and a nice fat rainbow on opening day.  I tried everything from powerbait to spinners/lures to worms/waxies/meals.. only thing I haven't tried yet is minnows, and honestly, I think I'm just gonna wait til late next week before I even try again.  Not sure what the deal is this year, but these fish better start bitin soon or I may have to take up spear fishing. Thanks for the reply. i was just curious about conditions on the creek, I've been skunked before and will be again, but I felt kind of bad because I talked a friend from work into going up and the fishing was so slow.

youghdude -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/19/2008 11:28:24 PM)

Hell, we all get skunked every now and then.  It makes you appreciate the good days.

DanesDad -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/20/2008 1:36:15 AM)

Maybe it is the creek.  I fished all day today (saturday) all through the gorge and down past Kingston dam.  My efforts have proven that there is a sundry assortment of fish there including chubs, suckers, carp, and smallmouth bass.  And the place is LOADED with rock bass.  But the one thing I didn't catch all day (neither wild or stocked) was trout.  Tried minnies, redworms, and spinners.  And the day wasn't really bright, tho the water was pretty clear.  I saw one trout caught and heard rumor of two more.  I was out and the weather was nice, so I cant complain too much, but the trout weren't very cooperative.  I usually use my "get skunked" days on hunting, but today it was trout fishing.

HardCore Fisher -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/20/2008 1:40:42 AM)

Trout were there during opening day and the Sunday after, caught 8 Saturday an 4 Sunday including a tiger trout, i'm goin tomorrow hopin the rain isn't gonna mess things up.

Some rain might actually help, the water is real clear right now.  A moderate rain might color it up a little and maybe make the fish less spooky.

glock2340 -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/20/2008 8:39:13 AM)

I fished the loyalhanna yesterday morning from Patty's Hole up to Avenue D and got skunked.  I then went below sleepy hollow and fished for a while and got skunked there also.  I saw a nice palamino and threw everything I had at it.  It would chase everything but not bite.  I saw a few other trout behind rocks but nothing would hit.  The water is low and clear

Jonesin -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/20/2008 10:50:37 AM)

Went out yesterday morning with 2 friends, just up from Ave D (right behind Latrobe Steel as usual) with a bucket of minnows.  They were tossin worms, power bait, maggots, and meal worms.  I stuck with the minnows.  I was the only one that caught anything.. a nice 10in smally, and a 6in smally.. that was it.. no bluegills, no trout.. nothin..  gonna try again tomorrow morning if the rain lets up a bit.

Cold -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/20/2008 9:09:18 PM)

Fished it Saturday, below Murphy's bridge, below the causeway, and just above Lady of the Lake.  Skunked hard core at Murphy's bridge.  Caught a smallie and an overgrown horned chub below the causeway (saw a nice brookie that was too spooked).  Landed a small rainbow up above, by Lady of the Lake.  Fishing seemed slow everywhere I went, as the smallmouth I caught (@ 8"), was the largest fish I saw coming out of the water at sleepy hollow.  Up in the DHALO, I didn't even see anyone except for a fly fisherman.  After the rainbow I got a few hits, but none of them really meant business.

Wally Cat -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/20/2008 11:43:40 PM)

Fished opening day and landed 6......no wall hangers but never the less decent fish.

mariosteam0506 -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/22/2008 9:06:04 AM)

Hot Shot -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/22/2008 10:11:13 AM)

Anyone know what the water conditions are?? I'm thinking about making a trip up tomorrow and just trying to figure out what it looks like... Thanks for any info...

mariosteam0506 -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/22/2008 10:44:44 AM)

well it wasn't that nice on sunday, but it should be nice by then.[:)]

Hot Shot -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/22/2008 11:09:19 AM)

Thanks for the info... A friend and myself might be heading up there this Saturday as well... If anyone is out n about up there and would want to meet up just send me a PM... Thanks again

Cold -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/22/2008 11:21:27 PM)

Was out a bit this evening, at the bottom end of the DHALO, where I got a rainbow.  Apparently they stocked that section today, though I didn't notice much of a difference.  My buddy pulled out a smallie as well.

As far as water conditions, its clear, fast, and deep.  Makes wading difficult and crossing impossible in most places.  Still, it's not chocolate milk, and the fish seem to be fine with it, just gotta be persistent and thorough in covering every hole.

martyweir -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/27/2008 9:29:47 PM)

I was in the DHALO last Tuesday, and they were feeding pretty aggressively on the surface.  I threw every dryfly I had at them, but couldn't even get a look.  I did see a few (very few) Large mayflies fluttering around...  The Maples were dropping buds in the water, and every fly I threw looked like one of them - at least to me!!! Very frustrating day...  Oh well, one day I'll figure it out.

What dryflies are working right now???

Loomis -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/27/2008 11:17:19 PM)

Adams, Small Caddis, and Creme Midges have been working for me.  The DHALO gets pounded and those fish get pretty smart pretty fast.  Your dryflies have been thrown by the guy who just left 1000 times before you, its tough for everyone right now.  My next inquiry, were they rising or taking emergers??? I saw a ton of emerger activity today, but very little rising, def a difference

bubba-jet -> RE: Slow day on the loyalhanna (4/28/2008 9:26:52 PM)

Most of the stocked Trouts stomachs  Ive kept were full of dark nymphs.
