I think most all of you missed the point with the question about the TROUT  it is not about eating them it's about wasteing them by throwing them away or in the garbage. Years ago the fish commision did a survay arround the lakes and estamated that about 60% of the fish were thrown away not eaten. I wonder what that number is today ?   Instead of putting them back they just have to show everyone just how many fish they cought.    HOW SAD THAT IS !!!

I've never seen, or heard of that survey, and would have to before I would believe that.  I just can't see someone telling a census taker " yeah I take them home, and just toss them in the garbage".

Pennsylvania’s trout anglers are big on recycling – fish that is. Two newly-released Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission/Penn State University studies found that the state’s trout anglers have high catch rates and high release rates as well. In fact, most trout caught in Pennsylvania’s waters are released, in turn extending and improving recreational fishing opportunities.
The studies examined separately angler use patterns and economic values associated with Pennsylvania’s trout-stocked streams in the spring of the year and wild trout streams mid-April through Labor Day weekend. While there were differences in the two fisheries, there were distinct similarities as well – the high rates of anglers practicing catch and release chief among them. Anglers fishing stocked trout streams in the spring caught, on average, slightly more than one trout per hour fished; 63.1% of those fish were subsequently released. During the course of the legal fishing season on wild trout waters, average catch rates varied from around one fish every two hours for brook and brown trout on large streams (0.51 per hour and 0.56 per hour, respectively) to nearly two brook trout per hour (1.76 fish per hour) on small streams. An amazing 92.7% of wild trout were released.
“In evaluating fisheries, we consider average catch rates of one trout for two hours of fishing time as ‘good.’ The fact that both wild trout fisheries and stocked waters averaged, and in many cases far surpassed, this measure is exciting. Perhaps even more intriguing is the fact that so many trout are being released once caught. Logic suggests that there is a strong connection between these two findings,” said Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) Executive Director Doug Austen.

I don't get that. Last time I ate trout was when I was a kid, and it was the best fish I've ever eaten. I ended up taking it right off of the grill before it was even done.

I can't imagine why someone would take one without the intention of eating it. The batter fried crap that they serve in bars and resturants can go straight to the dumpster though.

Through the 80's and early 90's my brother, dad ,and myself must have given our nieghbor hundreds of trout, we kept our limit everytime out pretty much. He took all of them to a bar(unknown to us at the time) and they made them for everyone there. "He" was known as the ace trout fisherman by those guys. We did sometimes use garbage bags to carry them in although.

I do eat my bag limit of stockies at this time of year.....because, I like them and because in many of these creeks the trout will not survive the summer. This week I have seen so many fish die soon after release for some reason, so, I catch my five, whatever the size and then stop fishing and wait for my next fishing day.
Wild trout, yes, I would mostly catch and release, but I know that is not the case at Turtle Creek!

Im not sure how so many people who assume that most people are throwing fish away have the time to look through everyone's garbage. 

You might as well say that anyone who keeps fish is short in the pants.  To which I'd also ask why and how do you know?

I learned a long time ago to never assume anything about fishermen.  There is never any real rhyme or reason why we do anything we do, we're just a weird bunch.  But most of us are decent people that rarely would throw anything away we are so passionate about.  Does one fillet or one trout get shoved to the back of the freezer now and then?  Maybe, but I'd bet its like .005 of all the fish kept each year. 

People assume that guys keep fish to show off and take pics of at home.  That may be the case some of the time, but its not in our instincts.  Our instincts tell us to get out hands dirty by gutting the hell out of it and putting it on fire.  It's primal.  I would guess that most who bring fish home for the wrong reasons cook it up asap for that very reason.  Those of us who really like the taste of whatever we brought home freeze it so we can enjoy it on a day when we didnt fish or because we're eating some and saving the rest for later. 

Remember that besides women who fish, we're all just a bunch of dudes who for thousands of years have been going out and bringing back food for the table one way or another.  So throwing away fish goes against our nature and our ego.  Whether someone else is eating it or not we'll sit there with a plate full of fish just to show that off too. 

Now as for whether it goes to the trash after its cooked that has nothing to do with bad intentions, just bad culinary skills....which like the first steak we all ever cooked, can easily be improved on next time.

I never kept trout, other than a few for coon bait.  But the kids caught a few this weekend and I threw them in the new smoker......Awesome!  Will probably keep a few each year now.
