matthoops33 -> PETERS SUCKS (4/14/2008 12:36:54 PM)

Everytime I've been to peters creek (over ten times), I havent caught a single fish. I'd like to know where and what people are catching them on because I've covered every inch of water in that stream and thrown everything from mealworms to roostertails.

Ax -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/14/2008 3:56:22 PM)

matthoops33 I find it hard to believe you cant catch a fish in Peters.  Try here fishing between Gill Hall road and the iron bridge toward 51.  Anywhere there is a hole in between these two places will hold fish.  Just go slow and check all the little pockets.

youghdude -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/14/2008 4:57:02 PM)

Sorry to hear you had a bad day there.  I never really caught a bundle out there but the ones I did catch were nice and great fighting fish.  In the same areas that AX mentioned.

PeteM -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/14/2008 6:08:45 PM)

I was in the upper stretch of piney fork and caught two very nice ones on a wooley bugger of my own design.

It can be a tough place to fish though, so I can understand the frustration.

matthoops33 -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/14/2008 6:55:02 PM)

Thanks guys...I mean its a pretty nice stream, and I guess I am a little inexperienced. But every other stream I've been to I've caught fish. I want so bad just to put together the puzzle at Peters.

PeteM -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/14/2008 7:13:15 PM)

This article has helped me a good bit, maybe it can do well for you too-

http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/books/rosenbauer_reading_water.aspx

I don't think that it applies only to fly fishing, and gives good insight to finding where they like to hold. I have yet to land extrordinary numbers of fish, but they allways seem to be of substantial size.

Timachro -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/14/2008 11:22:39 PM)

I was on Peters on Sunday afternoon and i did fairly good.landed 1 brown trout and should have had 3 or 4 others that got off right before i landed them. My brother and I were fishing right under green mans tunnel.

Ax -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/15/2008 7:45:38 AM)

One thing to remember about Peters is this.  They put in large fish so the numbers they stock are not great.  But they still have a decent amount of fish in the creek still none the less.  I have had my most luck on Peters in the larger holes that run a little deeper than most.   I also noticed on Peters that fishing the log/stick piles tends to be a good move.

matthoops next time I fish Peters I will let you know.  Hopefully I could put you on some trout down there but if not I will show you how to catch Carp on jigs. lol

matthoops33 -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/15/2008 3:26:48 PM)

Sounds great AX. Thanks for the help!

Kokanee Killer -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/15/2008 8:47:43 PM)

they are there

DaGman -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/16/2008 5:40:06 AM)

Yes indeed, peters can be frustrating, i can attest to that myself as well, but as Ax stated, the stretch between gill hall road to the little iron bridge down stream by the ponds is generally a very good stretch, you should be able to haul a few in within this area, good luck to ya bud.

SmallieKiller -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/18/2008 8:31:33 PM)

Fished opening day weekend, a couple hours each day and landed 6 both days, while dropping a few here and there.  They are in there, but they're dug in and responded to very slow presentations

Timachro -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/18/2008 9:04:16 PM)

Nice pic smalliekiller. gotta love the Pens sweeping the Sens!!!!!

TransAmWS6 -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/19/2008 6:21:07 PM)

fished 3 hours today and landed 0... i sucked big time today

bennyhanna -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/20/2008 9:32:19 AM)

although peters is far from my stream of choice its close & covenient and i always seem to do well there...

DJ2007 -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/20/2008 11:45:36 AM)

They were hitting on slower presentation of spinners opening day.  My group landed 15 in 3 hours.  The seaweed is killer on that creek.  Make sure you check your fly/spinner on almost every cast, espically when the water is high.  The trout stocked this year are smaller than the big ones in the past, fewer of them as well.  Smaller baits seem key due to this.  Anyone ever fish the Clairton side of 51?

never caught any trout on that side of 51 but have caught many smallies sauger sheep head and carp that way once the water warms up...

there are just as many nice deep bends down that way as there are in the jefferson end of things..

SmallieKiller -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/21/2008 1:22:18 PM)

Fished it Sunday morning and had horrible results.  The creek was high and off color.  Missed two, had one on for a second.  Felt like we were too early though, the creek seemed to be clearing up around noon, right as we were leaving.  Oh well.  I'll get them next time.

DaGman -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/22/2008 9:04:18 PM)

Where exactly does Piney fork feed into Peters? I remember once driving way upstream somewhat exploring (never got out the car) and i seem to remember a stretch of the road that had a cpl of real sharp bends to it where it seemed the creek was fairly back in there away from the road (it was Fall cause i remember somewhere along those bends somebody was selling cornstalks) is this the area where Piney fork dumps into Peters, or a tad downstream or yet a tad further upstream? i also remember a small kids park right off the road once i wen't even further up the road.

PeteM -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/22/2008 10:28:56 PM)

They meet up directly after Greenmans tunnel on the side near the parking lot. Piney fork comes thrugh the tunnel and Peters joins it just after it exits the tunnel. Piney does bend quite a lot through out. There is still one long winding stretch that I'm going to explore a bit soon. It actualy goes all the way up brightwood road to south park road, and comes out of the ground behind Evanovich Landscaping, next to the streetcar tracks, if you know where that is.

leptodia -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/23/2008 8:02:35 AM)

There are actually two branches of Piney Fork. The main stem of Piney Fork starts at top of Clifton Rd near Als Cafe and winds its way along Clifton and through Simmons Park. Eventually meets up with the the Brightwood tributary at Rt 88 Clifton Rd intersection. Usually only stock Piney Fork from Sewage Plant on down but sometimes start at Co Gos. I helped put the fish in this year. They were not small. More than usual went in to Piney Fork since South Park Twp put up 1000 bucks toward the cause. Also, stocked different holes than usual this time around. Pete, did you catch your 14-16 inchers above or below the sewage plant?

PeteM -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/23/2008 2:00:53 PM)

I caught them right at the first bend about 50 yds. down from the outlet, and again about another hundred yards down from there. I tried further up where catfish run enters, but got no attention.

A little expedition and spotting turned up a whole lot throughout.

Also, sorry about not showing for the stocking as I said I would. My wife reminded me that that Wednesday was our anniversary, and I didn't want to miss it.

leptodia -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/23/2008 4:17:28 PM)

Probably wise not to blow off your anniversary. We always get enough help for stocking. Thanks for helping out with the clean-up. Its harder to get folks out for that. You ever fished Piney Fork at Washing Machine Lake. Thats a nice stretch.

DaGman -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/23/2008 7:05:44 PM)

Where abouts is the Sewage plant & Greenmans tunnel exactly located, i'm looking at Google Maps under a search titled "Gill Hall Road", can you direct me to these 2 locations leptodia, thanks.

aranbp -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/24/2008 7:50:57 AM)

Dagman,Go up past greenmans.  Keep going I beleive there is a stop sign at the top of the hill.  Make a left.  Follow for alittle bit.  The plant will be on your left.  You will see the walking trail.  If you pass cogos you went to far.  Did good fishing there last night.  We got 4 below the tunnel in about a hour.  That and we had 2 5 year olds with us.  The one that was fishing missed a real nice one.  He forgot to set the hook.  I wish I had my video camera with me. Also for greenman it is the tunnel on the road.

leptodia -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/24/2008 8:57:46 AM)

Type "Piney Fork Rd, PA" in Google Maps. Piney Fork Rd intersects with Gill Hall Rd. Take Piney Fork Rd west. Go straight at stop sign past Snowden Wetland. Greenman's Tunnel is actually the salt storage tunnel you pass on the right. You will then come to Corvette Tunnel. Piney Fork is the stream running through this tunnel. Piney Fork meets Peters Creek right downstream of tunnel. Follow Piney Fork Road north past tunnel and it will wind up a hill. At next stop sign turn left down hill. At bottom of hill you will pass Triphammer Rd to left crossing Piney Fork. At next stop sign continue down the hill and sewage plant will be on your left. On the map you can see sewage plant tucked between Piney Fork Rd and Mike Reed Dr. Montour Trail runs along Piney Fork. Public parking access is at sewage plant. Stream easily accessed from trail. Hope this helps.

DaGman -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/24/2008 12:18:16 PM)

Thanks guys for the directions, will be both printing out the instructions given to me (just in case,lol) and also a map of this area, again many thanks, i'm looking at probably going this weekend, talked to my brother-in-law & "as usual" he wants to hit the same couple holes we usually hit & then he said we'd eventually go upstream, directions will come in handy.

SmallieKiller -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/24/2008 12:19:47 PM)

There is some nice water up by the water treatment plant, but I think that goes without saying.  That is an awesome creek.

PeteM -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/24/2008 2:53:32 PM)

Just got back from the area between Gill hall and the stretch upstream to the high tressle.

There were a bunch of utterly enormous carp. Tried a couple of wooley buggers and nymphs, even had a few follow a nymph to my feet, but couldn't get a bite to save my life.

Anybody know what gets them biting? I'd realy like to hook up with one of them.

DaGman -> RE: PETERS SUCKS (4/25/2008 5:54:06 AM)

Not good to hear (lol) as being in contact with my brother in law concerning this weekends trip to peters, he still insists we start off at the gill hall road stretch b4 we head upstream to piney fork, he's growing old rapidly (lol) no adventure in his old exploring days.
