WTF? Am I the only one on this board that thinks that this passed greed about 2000 fish ago? In my opinion this is a good example of why the PFC should lower the limit on crappie. 2500 caught, congratulations,2500 killed, shame on you. I am really surprised that on a board where c&r is so highly recommended that no one else has commented.    sam

I am pretty sure 2500 may have been a bit of a stretch...just a bit probally, but still a stretch.  2500 divided by 25 good keepers a day equals 100 days of purdy good fishing.  Greed doesn't sound like a factor to me though...when you clean the fish and feed family, friends, and help out people in a church group.  Now if all of us were able to get on the water 100 times a year and be fortunate to bring in 25 good keepers each and every time out... well then we would have a real problem, wouldn't we???  Luckily for the crappie no one seems to be quite as good at getting them at chaunc.
Now I have not been out for trout since high school, I think the limit is 6???  3000/6=500 days of limit fishing last year for peacymike???

I fish for muskies for fun.  I fish for walleyes and crappies because I like to eat fish.  They never get wasted and actually the carcasses get used for coon bait, so don't chastise me.
It just so happens that I release everything else.
I don't get all high and mighty about someone keeping a musky, I just try to lead the people I fish with by example.  Get a life.

Mr Crappie, quit drinking that HATERAID. I've thrown back at least that many. I fish 3 to 4 times a week. Sometimes only a couple hours a day. If i kept all the fish i caught, it would still be none of your buisness. As long as the limit is being honored, whats the problem.
On another note, i'm not a PAID guide but i do take a lot of people fishing. I keep a log of all the fish caught in my boat per day. Thats how i got the total fish kept for the year. If you fish with C&R guys, thats okay. People fish with me because they want to take fish home. They may put gas in my car and boat but thats if they choose too. I'm not a paid guide. Ask the guys from the KCA about me. Ask the guys i meet out on the water and they're having a tough time catching fish. I'll stop what i'm doing to help in any way i can. Even giving them the baits that are working for me. So dont try to chastise me for keeping 2500 crappies in a season. CHECK YOURSELF.

chaunc, i will attest to the fact that you have helped many, including me.  also, if memory serves me right, you make sure that everyone has fish.  you are one of the few who give away and who share.  also, don't you fish at least three states (oh, pa and ky)?

Yes sir, i do. Been fishing PA and OHIO all my life. Started fishing KY lake 20 years ago and i've made it an annual trip every spring. I'm going to fish a few more Ohio lakes this year as i've been invited to fish with members from the Ohiogamefishing website. Berlin, West branch, Indian lake, and Delaware are on the list. I feel very blessed to have guys i dont know, invite me to come fish their lakes. I don't think they'd invite a fish hog. Do you? We may be able to find new patterns on their lakes i've worked on my home lake. And they are invited to come over to PA and fish with me too. Just costs them so much for a non resident license, some cant afford it and gas to get here too.

I am not sure of the crappie kill you speak of but I am sure that without size and number limits that make sense ,we will not have many crappie.
I am concerned that our youth and new fisherman really need panfish to get experience fishing.
Crappies especially are great to start fishing  easy to catch and eat
.
NY especially chatauqua  lost there great crappie fishing for a few years (tournaments and Liberal Limits) they finally wised up and put a limit of 30 at least 9 inches long about 5 years ago and the good crappie fishing is returning.  To bad pa is so long to act on things like this
Fish hogs love to take as many crappies as they can catch regardless of size I have seen people at wilhelm leave with a bucket full and be back later for even more than 50 again some are 8 or smaller inches long.

I have put my own limit on with some of my friends 20 at least 10 inches long (measured no guessing)
Lets be honest how much meat is on a 8inch or smaller crappie. Why kill it?

This drives me nuts as well...I don't see the point in keeping a 7 or 8" crappie, but I see it all the time.  I too have a 10" minimun personal size limit for perch and crappie.  However, since these people aren't breaking any laws, all you can do is shake your head.

Its not my concern what you take..its my concern for whats going to be had to be taken out of there the next year and year after...thats whole point trying to be gotten across pymy...

just becusae you're not breaking the law doesnt mean its really right taking a numbers after numbers of 8 inch crappies.

say you had a pond. had fish in there, and then all the sudden people came to your pond and took them out. and they were all small fish. now since it was your pond you'd be pissed no matter is they were small or big, even more pissed if they were big BUT point being you have no fish in your pond anymore worth fishing for.

ugh im going to throw up shenago again...i've seen alot of people keeping small small fish, when everyone knows you can get better fish in the lake. point being you keep the small fish..they'll never grow up..you take that class of fish out of the lake..you keep doing that year after year...the fish wont show up being big anymore, in great numbers anyhow...

It just so happens that I release everything else. Actualy I didn't chastise you did I ? Now tell me honestly if you can, what would you think of someone that kept as many musky as he could every day & kept as many as the law allows even if he ate them or gave them away?At what point would you think enough is enough? I also fish for crappie for fun & to eat, I also help anyone with info & even gave people the lures that I was using to help them catch fish also. I also believe that you should respect the resource. I am not impressed with the numbers of fish that anyone catches as I fish for enjoyment. That is why I don't usualy post numbers when I give a report. I am just saying that I think that you should limit your kill not kill your limit. ( Get a life) ?  this is a discussion board isn't it. If you don't agree with my posts ,just ignore them       sam

If I knew a guy that was keeping every legal musky to eat or give away to eat, I would first say that he has poor taste in fish, and that he would have some long hungry spells.  Seriously, I wouldn't show him any new spots to keep them.  If you are within the law and not wasting your catch, your or I have no right to talk poorly about anyone.  Don't bitch at the fishermen, take spoonchuckers advice "get involved" get the limit changed by working with the state.  The musky fishermen did.

I don't keep a crappie that is less than the width of by hand from pinky to thumb (outstretched) 9 1/2 inch.  Not because of some noble conservation thought,  but because I am lazy and anything smaller than that is not worth the effort of filleting and I use the hand to measure cause it is easier than picking up a board everytime.

Actually studies show that when limits are lowered on crappie and bluegill across much of thier range, populations tend to explode and stunted fish ensue.

i had an uncle who owned a scuba-diving quarry in bessemer, and he and his brother frowned on fishing there because of fears of hooks and lines endangering divers (this was in the 60s).  on family reunions there, i was allowed to fish.  though i caught hundreds of gills and sunnies, i don't think i ever caught one over 6 inches.  population dynamics out of control resulting in a large but stunted population.

Growth is simple. Look at fish in an aquarium. Put 10 Oscars in a 55 gallon tank and they grow at most 10 inches and stay that size compared to just 2 Oscars in that 55 gallon tank and they get 22 -28+ inches.

Thats why most ponds that have over abundant bluegill you never see jumbo size. If 2500 is what just anglers catch I could only imagine what those commercial fisherman with those gill nets are harvesting.

Just sitting here watching the discovery channel called  human footprint. Id be a little bit more concerned with what they are showing then the yearly harvest of crappies.

muskymaster, Actualy I do get involved, I have talked to the PFC biologist several times already about raising size limits & lowering bag limits where needed. I also spearheaded the failed efforts of the Sportsmen in our area to get Beaver Run open to legal fishing. I have run several road cleanup efforts in our area & Sat. & Sun. gave up 2 days fishing so that I could help in our hunter safety classes. I am more than willing to get involved whenever I can.  sam

I noticed the comments under the walleye charter thread and think they were supposed to be posted here.  So in response to fishguts seeing guys leave with a buket full and then come back.  Did you call anyone call the fish warden, ask the guy, embarrass him right there in front of everyone.  Don't just stand there and fish and get mad about it.
