cjbs2003 -> Opening Day of Trout Season Locations? (4/11/2008 12:00:28 AM)

So with the varied crowd of preferred fishing styles we have on the forum, I was curious to see if anyone plans to fish the opening day and if so, where at? I am not a huge fan of opening day but for the social and family importance. I enjoy Yellow Creek near the Loysburg Gap off Rt 36. Lots of stocked rainbows and some beautiful wild brown trout thrown in for interest! Post pics of your first day as well! Good luck, I am leaving for PA tomorrow morning after work. Maybe I will see one or two of you out there. I will be fishing a couple creeks more north in the Altoona area on Sunday. I hope it doesn't get too cold and windy!

Im planning to sleep in a little bit. I live right beside Bald Eagle AND Spring Creek. Kinda pointless to go out there and just stand. Ill sleep in then go.

After deer season? Give three weeks, you wont see a soul.

I have to agree. The first week is a circus. Then if a stream gets a second stocking it's nuts but after that you'll own the stream. Especially if you hit them at first light.

Laurel Hill creek or Jones Mill run.  Both big enough to get away from the crowds.

While the opener used to be a ritual with my friends, it has become much less important to me over the years.  Despite the good teachers that I had in my late teens, I never really mastered stream fishing.  My fishing and hunting mentor, John (who may be reading this so I need to be careful what I type) waited until the crowds disappaited on Canoe Lake in Blair Co.  Nearly every week on Tuesdays from the second week until May, we would sit in a boat on that lake from dawn until lunchtime (or whitecapped waves kicked us off).  We had a lot of fun in those earlier years.  Of course then, Canoe was the home lake and favored spot of the local conservation officer.  For that and other reasons, the lake received massive stockings pre season and in season of decent fish.  Additionally there were plenty of trophy sized fish stocked. One time John even caught one.  Of course, not being much of a trout fisheman, I had never seen a golden rainbow before.  When I was ready to net the fish he had fought for awhile, he asked me what it was.  I replied that it was a "big, gold fish"  he then told me to get it in the boat!  I miss those days and the ability, with fewer, responsibilities and a lighter work schedule to spend time with good friends.  Hopefully, we can do that again a couple of times this year and take my son along.

Things that I do not miss about the opener on the many streams we used to fish:  crowds of "Wal-Mart" fisherman (those who do not routinely fish but do for the first day you often see them with 3500 series spinning gear loaded with 15lb Berkely Big Game line an hooks the right size to snag a stockie), the typical weather, feeling the need to keep trout although I have only ever eaten a couple in my entire life.  Things I do miss: time with the guys who taught me to fish, playing a fish in a 4' wide glorified ditch, the feeling of 1/2 a lb of corn weighing down the pocket in my home made fishing vest!

Have fun and be safe.  I enjoy any time on the water but may have to sit this out in favor of doing some stuff around the house that will NOT get done once the crappies turn on big time or Walleye become legal sammich fare again!

good luck,
Brent

I imagine for many guys, it's more about tradition and the social aspect, than it is about actual fish or fishing.

duncsdad -> RE: Opening Day of Trout Season Locations? (4/13/2008 7:09:49 AM)

I spent the opener sitting at my computer booking our annual last week of June Tarpon fishing trip.

With the Little J within 20 miles, I can fish all year round, so opening day is just another day on the calendar.

Well, the opening day turned out to be a nice day after all! No rain and mostly sunny, but the wind did pick up in the afternoon. Although I not a huge fan of the freshly stocked trout, they do still put up a fight and that is half the fun to me. I like Yellow Creek because it is big enough to not feel like you fishing in a barrel and actually has some wild trout in it. But for me the opener is nice to spend time with family and run into some of my old friends who still reside in PA. It is amazing how the same people fish the same places year after year. I saw a couple rainbows over 20" caught on Yellow Creek Saturday and well over a hundred typical sized rainbows. I personally caught 13 rainbows 10"-12" long, 4 wild brown trout between 7"-10" and one rather fat and uncolorful hatchery brookie that was 14" long. All were put back into Yellow Creek for the fisherman next week... I was surprised at how uncrowded Yellow Creek was. I never once got my line tangled with another fisherman nor really ever felt crowded. I have to say that this was a first for opening day. Today(Sunday) the creek was dead with almost no one around and I caught 12 in just 2 hours of fishing before I started to head south back to Virginia. I hope you all enjoyed your opening day, whether you fished it or said the heck with the crowds and sat at home...

Sounds like a great opening day! I wish I was in PA today to do some fishing, but I am getting ready to head out to fish for somme hickory and American shad on the Potomac River. They are a blast to catch on a fly rod!

Mikastorm -> RE: Opening Day of Trout Season Locations? (4/18/2008 9:15:12 AM)

cj I envy you. Always wanted to hit the shad.[image]http://forums.fishusa.com/micons/m6.gif[/image] Please keep us posted on how you did.

Salmo,

I go to Islamorada in the Keys.  Tarpon migrate through there from May to early July.  It is sight fishing for huge fish on a fly.

cjbs2003 -> RE: Opening Day of Trout Season Locations? (4/19/2008 11:04:30 PM)

I know this aint PA, but here is a pic of one of the shad I caught this morning. I bet it jumped 10 times! They have been really nice sized this year so far, 14" up to the largest being 21.5" my personal best for hickory shad. Maybe in the near future with the work of the PFBC is stocking American and hickory shad fry into some of the tributaries of the Juniata and Susquehanna and the removal of dams and the installation of fish ladders, central PA fisherman will get to enjoy the fun locally!

Shad look almost like miniature tarpon and when hooked act just like them!

They look like striper bait too me.

cjbs2003 -> RE: Opening Day of Trout Season Locations? (4/20/2008 10:09:46 PM)

Well, if you could keep them which some guys do, they make EXCELLENT striper bait... I just stick with the smaller alewife and blueback herring for bait since you can legally keep them.

duncsdad -> RE: Opening Day of Trout Season Locations? (4/21/2008 7:32:51 PM)

Ever have one of those shad snap the ferrule of a 12-weight?
