Great as monday's game was, all the Pens did was buy a ticket to game 6. Granted it IS a front row seat, with an option for game 7. Time to exercise their option.

MuskyMastr -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 1:36:11 PM)

Get out the Hot Sauce, Cause I smell wings on the grill......  Mike Lang could probably work with that one.

I predict either a blowout by the pens tonight, or a loss.  For some reason I just think either we are going to explode on them.  If we don't however, and the wings respond well to the loss on mon, then we are in trouble.  If the pens win tonight, start shinin  the cup and prepare to hear 400 stories about "The Kid".  A win tonight and it is over it will destroy the wings confidence, which has been really key for them throughout the playoffs.

spoonchucker -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 1:41:07 PM)

A win tonite, neutralizes the Wings home ice advantage, and maybe gives the Pens a SLIGHT edge. Still a toss up in game 7.

SmallieKiller -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 2:15:09 PM)

Someone say something about being FIRED UP!?!?!?!?!?

It's a complete waste of my time to go to class tonight, but I will be there until at least 7...  Then it's on.

IUP30 -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 2:27:20 PM)

The wings are the most calm and professional team in the league.  Even being down early in game 5 you didn't see them running around crazily.  If they wings lose tonight, I don't think they'll be shaken much or lose their confidence.  Each win the Pens have taken from them have been CLOSE games and decided by a bounce here or there.  The wings know they're the better team and seem to be more rested.

I don't think the Pens will blow them out tonight, if they even win... they've got to be feeling the effects of the last game more than Detroit.  Pens were on their heels most of the game and as everyone knows and had said before, Fleury was the difference and why the Pens won.  Detroit seemed to jump all over the Pens and have quicker feet in the OTs.

spoonchucker -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 2:41:59 PM)

One of the reasons the "younger" Pens haven't been able to wear down the Wings IS that confidence. In the offensive zone, they fire shots from all angles, and all over the ice. This gets the Pens running around chasing the puck. Meanwhile the wing maintain position. If the rebound, or a puck off the boards come their way, they are in position to play it. If not, they drop back, and play defense. The opposite tend to be true when the Pens are in the zone. The Pens are always looking to make "the" play. The Wings know this, and can patiently clog up the lanes. There is much more wasted energy on the part of the Pens, and it shows late in the game.

And still won the game.

The Wings have carried most of the play, but the series is 3-2.  So good for them.  They outshot the Pens 13-2 in OT 1, and lost.  The Wings have hardly blown the Pens off the ice in a game yet.  Yeah they shut them out 2 straight, but then have surrendered 8 goals in the next 3 games.  I don't recall the wings jumping out to a big lead in the first in a single game.

Based on what?  The middle of the second OT on, the Pens carried the play a lot more and looked to be the fresher team, so I'm not sure how that makes the Wings "more rested".

Granted yes, the Wings are the better team, but it's not a mismatch by any means.  Fluery is better than Osgood, Crosby and Hossa have gotten the better of Datsyuk and Zetterberg, but Detroit's superior depth has made the difference.

SmallieKiller -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 2:54:02 PM)

Y'know what the strangest part of the series is...  When they're in Detroit, there's no bitter fans chanting "Crosby sucks", there's no whining about diving or embellishment.  Not sure what that means, but I have a pretty good idea.

IUP30 -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 3:02:26 PM)

"And still won the game."

FLEURY

"The Wings have hardly blown the Pens off the ice in a game yet.  Yeah they shut them out 2 straight, but then have surrendered 8 goals in the next 3 games.  I don't recall the wings jumping out to a big lead in the first in a single game. "

FLEURY

"Based on what?"  -- "Detroit's superior depth"

You said it for me, Smallie.  More depth, the Wings can rotate more lines in and keep legs fresh.  That's why you saw Darren Helm, Maltby and Hudler out much more than you were seeing Ruutu or Hall.  Therien has been playing with lines more so who knows what you'll see...

SmallieKiller -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 3:17:29 PM)

Their depth is more talented, not more rested.  The Pens looked like they could of played another 3 OTs, the Wings, not so much.

Detroit has controlled the puck way more than the Pens, but is only up 3-2 and smarting after blowing the game on Monday.  Fluery played great in game 5.  Game 4, he's the reason they lost.  Two horrible goals, especially Hudlers.

The Pens aren't actually playing that bad.  Game 7 on Saturday, I could care less how it gets there.  I think you're giving Detroit a little to much credit, but as expected, if the Pens win, it will be because Detroit blew it, not because the Pens earned it.  I'd expect as much on here.

They are so calm and professional that their goalie stormed out of the rink refusing to give any interviews.  Very professional!

Fleury nearly fell asleep giving interviews.

IUP30 -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 3:36:33 PM)

Depth of talent relates directly to rest!!!  Detroit can afford to play and rotate their 4 lines due to that talent and confidence in them... giving the 1st and 2nd lines needed rest between shifts.  If the Pens are only rotating 3 lines or double-shifting Crosby it wears down those top lines with the increased ice time.

Sorry I gotta say it but WHAT GAME WERE YOU WATCHING???  Pens looked DEAD in the OT's minus a couple rushes of adrenaline when Detroit got sloppy in their own zone.  Every time they showed Crosby on the bench his head was between his knees huffing and puffing.  Yea, after the final puck went in...adrenaline rush and they looked like they were on top of the world and could have gone another 20 periods.

Fleury wasn't the reason behind the loss in game 4... he was the reason the game was close.  Pens were still outshot and the goal wasn't that bad... just a bad bounce that hit off the post, then his elbow and in the net.  Looks worse than it was really.

I'm just giving the Wings the credit they deserve... outshooting the Eastern Conf. Champs in the finals by over 80 shots in 5 games and controlling many of the aspects of the games (with the exception of some bounces and some calls).

IUP30 -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 3:39:43 PM)

"They are so calm and professional that their goalie stormed out of the rink refusing to give any interviews.  Very professional!"

How can you even try to comment on that?  So by not giving an interview after a long game and a tough loss, you're all of a sudden unprofessional???  Wow, It's not his job to give interviews... it's his job to play hockey.  After that game was over, he had no need to talk about it, just start thinking about the next one.

Because it actually is their job to make themselves available to the media during playoffs.  It's mandated by the NHL.  That's how it's unprofessional.

spoonchucker -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 3:52:49 PM)

Crosby is seeing a little extra ice time, but very little. On par with his regular season time.

Detroits 2nd goal in game 4 WAS fairly soft ( he left to much net on the short side, just mis-judged his position ). Can't say though, that in itself cost them the game. I guarantee there isn't a Pens player that feels it did. With the possible exception of Fluery himself, and HE recovered very well if he did.

Heavily outshooting the Pens is no unique achievement. They are not a shooting team, and they also tend to be content with allowing those perimeter shots.

It appears I was incorrect, technically.

However, all players talk to them after games.  Unless of course, they lose and want to be bitchy little babies about it.  In that case, they storm out and don't talk to anyone.

Refs Working Against The Flyers?
May 15, 2008 | 3:20PM | report this

That’s the suggestion of some Flyers fans in chat rooms, message boards and blogs, as well as in comments on some of my Foxsports.com articles.
NHL officiating always gets knocked more in the post-season than it does in the regular season (when there’s always a steady drumbeat of discontent over it).
I haven’t found the officiating to be any better or worse in this year’s playoffs. It seems about the same, some games it’s good, some games it’s questionable.
As for the Flyers, it seems to be part of their cultivation of their underdog status, their “us against the world” mentality in this year’s post-season to suggest they’re not getting the benefit of the calls or for some of their fans to outright make that claim.
So, is there any truth to it?
Granted, the Flyers are bound to be watched more closely than other teams given the notable suspensions handed down to a couple of their players during the season, which at one point earned them a stiff public rebuke by the NHL ‘s disciplinary arm.
In the Flyers-Washington Capitals series, both teams drew 35 penalties, the most notable being Washington’s Tom Poti’s tripping call that led to Joffrey Lupul’s overtime series-winning goal in Game Seven.
In the Flyers-Montreal Canadiens series, the Flyers had 22 penalties to the Canadiens 14, 8 of those coming in the very rough third game when Derian Hatcher took a stupid boarding call that saw him tossed from the game and put his team shorthanded for half of the third period. In the other four games, two saw the teams draw equal number of penalties , one saw the Flyers draw one more and the other two more than the Habs.
A questionable call on Mike Richards for tripping Alex Kovalev late in Game One resulted in Kovalev’s game-tying goal, but the Canadiens Steve Begin took a silly interference late in the third of Game Four that snuffed out his club’s rally and resulted in the game winning PP goal by Daniel Briere.
After three games against the Penguins in the Conference Finals, the Flyers were assessed 11 penalties, the Penguins 10, with six of those 11 penalties coming in Game Two.
Flyers fans were justifiably upset over Scottie Upshall’s tripping call when a similar one later in the game by a Penguin was not called, and Evgeni Malkin’s blatant elbow to the head of Daniel Briere in Game Two going uncalled.
Overlooked however was Jason Smith’s punch to the face of Sidney Crosby in Game Two that went uncalled, as did a couple of other questionable tactics on Crosby and Malkin that the officials missed.
In the final assessment thus far, except for three games (one in each series) where undisciplined play got the better of them, the Flyers haven’t been getting the worst of the calls. It's was dead even against the Capitals, only one game skewed their numbers against the Habs (a game the Flyers won anyway), and it's been almost even against the Penguins in the first three games.

As far as calls go, some have certainly been missed for the Flyers, but so too have they gotten their share of breaks against their opponents.

The only thing beating the Flyers in their series against the Penguins is the talent depth of the Penguins, the absence of Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn from the Flyers blueline and the inability of the rest of the Flyers defense to contain the Penguins speed. Penalties have nothing to do with it.

**Update** In Game Four, the Flyers were only called for two penalties, the Penguins called for four, leading a clearly upset Penguins coach Michel Therrien to sarcastically compliment

Sorry about all the crap on the top. Don't know how it got caught up in my copying, and I can't edit it out.

"However, all players talk to them after games.  Unless of course, they lose and want to be bitchy little babies about it.  In that case, they storm out and don't talk to anyone."

OK - well in that case, how many interviews did the Pens give after games 1 and 2 after they were shut out?  Was every Pen lined up ready to give their reasons to reporters to why they didn't win the game?

The game was over, it was long and tiring on both teams and if you were 30 some seconds to winning the cup and then end up losing the game, after 3 OTs, let me tell you, you'd be sprinting to the cameras, lights and microphones to!!!  LOL

IUP30 -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 4:36:12 PM)

Spoonie - sorry but it's old already.  Our season is over and next year will come soon enough... just enjoying the finals now.

Question though, why didn't you find the articles on the goaltender interference calls on Detroit cuz they are everywhere!

Yes, every Penguin answered questions about why they lost.  A bunch of kids, stood in there and answered questions they didn't want to answer.  Nobody ran to the cameras, but nobody hid either.  They acted like pros and adults need to act.

And here we have Mr. 2 cups, "professional" Red Wing, Chris Osgood.  Too pissed off to talk to anyone.  Again, hardly professional.

Who is acting like the pro?

And

Who is acting like the kid?

Tell me that.

Oh wait, you're a Flyers fan?

Never mind, that explains everything.

Carpet Bagger -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 4:51:56 PM)

I dont know why every1 is mad at the penguins over the goaltender interference...the refs made the call not the pens...

IUP30 -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 4:57:07 PM)

Being a Flyers fan has nothing to do with it... just trying to be subjective and my comments seem to be taken more as an attack cuz you're a Pens fan.  If you noticed I actually did defend some things Pittsburgh.  Flyers season is over... you don't seem me complaining about calls or saying we should be in the finals.  Series is over... life goes on.

I still think it's funny you're calling him unprofessional flat out because he didn't want to talk to the media.  If he wasn't pissed off at a loss and having his 3rd cup within inches being taken away, something would definitely be wrong.

Who is being the kid?  Well last I checked, it's kinda childish calling names and personal attacks based on one's personal team preference.  I'll let the audience answer.

MuskyMastr -> RE: Official playoff banter thread!! (6/4/2008 5:30:37 PM)

It is part of his JOB to talk to the press, when he doesn't do it it is considered unprofessional... What part of that is hard to understand???????

That being said, Pens fans have no room to talk about such things especially out of a goaltender........float back a few years to one of my all time favorite penguins.....
