i believe it was pretty even. not so sure about the two separate 5 on 3 powerplays though. usually the refs even it up and give the home team more power play chances or at least one 5 on 3. let's face it. the refs don't usually call the game according to actual penalties committed. they typically give the home team an advantage, but we will have to see how it pans out the rest of the series. the one big thing that annoys me sometimes about hockey, but that's just the way the game is played.

it's all good though. now, if the Pens would have lost due to the two 5 on 3's, it may be a different story.  lol.....

The game was called extremely fair i thought...The Sens could do NOTHING to answer the Pens... not even 5 on 3...

Crosby was playin some serious hockey tonight....Hossa looks like he is about 2 seconds away from breaking out on a scoring frenzy...

Malkin is a true sniper...lol that head shot looked pretty painful...Malkin can really bring it too...that had to hurt...

Roberts is back in true playoff form (hes 42 remember, and using that experience on the younger frustrated Sens) He really got under their skin tonight... Kennedy played tough and Whitney showed hes not as big of a wuss as i thought, beating on Redden.

Fluery starts off with a shut out in game one...huge confidence boost.....He has really matured and he looks good to go...

It was a good night for the Pens....Especially the 4th line who dominated...

I think we are going to see Ray Emery in this series...Pens put up 4 tonight and Gerber was fairly outstanding...

I was being sarcastic actually when I made the ref comment.  The Sens had two 5 on 3 power plays so I felt the need to take a jab at our friends from the East with the "refs are against us comments".  I feel the refs in the league are for the most part very good.  9 times out of 10, when they make a call it's the right call.  Just depends on how thick your "homer glasses" are.

I guess the difference is, we took retarded penalties when we were short handed and managed to kill them off.  I guess you only whine about it when your team gets scored on, guess it makes them that much more idiotic.

OK, random thought thread...  playoff edition.

First and foremost...  Wade Redden is a bigger puss than well, pretty much anyone at this point.  Not only did he get into a "gloves on" slapfest with Sidney Crosby, with whom he did not drop the gloves with and I assure you, had Redden dropped them, so would of Sid, but he then proceeded to get smoked by one of the softest D men in the league  Atta girl Wade.  (you should read the Sens board on HF Boards on this one, it's hysterical).

An opening game shutout for one of the hottest goalies down the stretch could be just what the doctor ordered for the playoff confidence of MAF.

Bryan Murray is still a retard.

Anton Volchenkov is a beast and if he ends up being out, that will hurt just as much as not having Alfredsson. (A-Train is supposed to play on Friday)

The Sens heart lies in Daniel Alfredsson.

The Pens 4th line owns the Sens...  OWNSSSSSS

Gary Roberts is back.

Crosby and Hossa are starting to click...  They're not there yet, but they're close.

Mezaros is one lazy human being.  I saw about 3 interference calls the refs let slide on him.  He is the king of the arm bar.

Not sure Dany Heatley played last night.  Only time I saw him was towards the end when he and Crosby were barking at each other.

Jason Spezza tried to do it all last night...  On his own.

Nice to see Sykora get one, that dude is streaky, lets hope this is the start of one of those streaks.

Gerber was the Senators best player last night.  They would of been buried without him.

it's only 1 win.  3 more to go.

"But the dying seconds last night were reflective of how Roberts' career will likely end. He's not going quietly. After a scrum in which he got a few swings in at Ottawa's Cody Bass, the linesmen tried to usher Roberts off the ice but he stood in the open gate, screaming back at the Sens, letting them know his squad wasn't going to pushed around. "

About Gary Roberts:  Yes he's dirty.  Yes he's old.  Yes he's slow.  But he's a freaking madman.

Out for 3 1/2 months.  First shift of the playoffs, he punches Redden in the face and Redden goes down then looks up at the ref who is right there.  The ref demonstratively waives "no penalty", as if to say "are you kidding me?  Get up, it's the first minute of the first game.  I'm not calling a penalty here, that's Gary Freaking Roberts.  You better get up."  Then Roberts backhands one into the net.  First minute of the game!

End of the game, Roberts scores again.  Next shift out, he boards Cody Bass, totally dangerous play, but that's how Scary Gary rolls.  That zone 4-5 feet out of the boards when  player gets hit from behind is really scary every time.  Anyway, that play sets the tone for Friday.  It riled the Sens up, and Gary's refusal to leave the ice was a thing of beauty.  He really, really hates the Senators.  That hate goes back 8-10 years, it's nothing new.

Absolutely awesome game for the Penguins.  They couldn't have asked for a better start.

The second period the Pens had the puck in Ottawa's zone for what seemed like 80% of the period.

Wade Redden is a quitter.  He laid down and quit in the cup finals last year, and he's ready to do the same in the first round this year.  Chris Phillips and Volchenkov are real men, great players, but Redden just doesn't have the guts.

Wade Redden was beaten down by Ryan Whitney...  That is all that needs to be said about the man.

Wish you could of seen it man, he had Redden's shirt pulled over his head and he was beating him down.  Then at the end, 3 Senators wanted a peice of Roberts and I thought he was going to take on all 3.  The linesmen jumped in on that one before anything happened though.  When they tried to get Roberts of the ice, he stood there and yelled at the Sens.  That man hates Ottawa and they hate him.  Game two should be interesting to say the least.

Game 1 was just a tune up...Pens are scoring 10 next game...Because im willing to bet the sens take alot more penalties.  lol Gerber was fantastic, standing on his head, in net and they still got 4....Fluery still has not has his playoff cherry popped...

Pens easily could have scored 8 goals last night if Gerber didnt perform the way he did.  He was the only Sen on the ice worth mentioning, a shame he will be critisized for letting in 4 goals...

Roberts is exactly what the Pens needed.  His leadership is obvious in the reaction of Talbot to someone screwing with Fleury, in Whitney finally throwing down (by the way what was impressive about the whitney fight was not actually the fighting, but the emotion that he had.  Did you see the look in his eyes, he was PI$$ED, which is what he needed).  And finally Roberts vs. the entire sens line that was on the ice was awesome in the fact that not one of the sens had the balls to take charge and man up 1 on 1 they were happy to keep it a group scrum (fear).  Roberts defiance to leave the ice had to be a lesson for his young teammates.......Anybody, anytime, anywhere........

Oh by the way smalliekiller you were it is only 1 game .... you were wrong about how many more.....15 !!!

And after that scrum, Bob Errey said the best thing he's ever said on the air.  As Roberts left the ice and started down the tunnel Errey said "and there he goes, back into his cage".

He earned his paychek for the year with that line, even if Grendel doesn't like him.

The Sens had nothing for the Pens. Your fourth line did play great. I love it though...when your team plays tough, they are hero's when the Flyers play tough they are dirty thugs..you guys are great...LOL

Agreed, and besides two idiotic boards by young, stupid Flyers early in the season I've seen more cheap plays by the Pens than the Flyers.

So I think the whole thug thing is unfounded, but you guys stay scared of us...I like it that way...
