Well finally I think the slabs are starting to move in. Fished the north end last night and caught 10. Nice fish from 10-13 1/2 inches. Saw lots of fish being caught and one kid who caught a few over 15 inches. Been waiting a while for this, but it should start to get hot now.

no, the north end over by the spillway. went again last night. caught 10 and my buddy got 15 before i left.

Just shore fishing and a little bit of wading. Looks like its gonna be a pretty nice weekend. Can't wait!!!!

A few of the bays by the Spillway and the end of the road. Now that I think about it, I do wade out of the Fries access road. That would be out toward Espyville. Only place I know to shore fish in Espyville would be the fishing pier they have by the causeway or the caseway itself. I've never fished from the pier, but know that they catch quite a few fish from the causeway.

Was out the past few nights and got a couple of keepers, but still alot of small fish. Any suggestions for bays that have been holding larger slabs??  Have tried wading the bay down by the Spillway Inn, but the water was pretty high.  Saw alot of guys in boats though.

I waded that bay last night...(it's called Stewart bay).  Like you I caught a few small ones.  It was tough fishing it though because of the muck.  I left just before dusk to fish the causeway with no luck.

Thanks for the update Bogey. Might have to try out there again, but i think i'll wait until it warms up again after this weekend. I've been parking on the spillway side of the bay to wade it, and wondere if you knew if there ws any access to get back to the other side of it??

There is access from the other side from Stewart lane, but it's more like a cowpath, and to be honest it's not ideal access for slab habitat...it opens up to more open, deeper water.

Was at the causeway today, Fished for whatever bit with minnies and crawlers, caught 35 or so perch, and my buddy got a nice 15 inch Crappie. I don't fish for them usually, and it was the biggest I've ever seen. Man those things look like fun. i may have to buy some gear.

Fished stewarts bay on thursday had 3 amish boats in there noone catching ----..  Who ever reported the crappie up in there is full of ----.  Also fished the causway a few dink perch all day another wasted trip.  Ill wait til mid may, then the fish should be up

Ps..  Save your money for gas the crappie and walleye bite is not happening.  Wait til may then they will be up.  2 Days and only 2 perch in the boat????  oh water temp is 46 degrees...

The comment wasnt directed at u.  I was just all pumped to get into them and another disappointing trip.  Should listen to the people who tell me may ; is the time  Give her a shot in may,

For the last two years we got them as soon as the ice came off in the north end bays, that has NOT been the case this year.  In fact a couple honey holes were completely devoid of crappies.  These spots are almost exclusively black crappie spots and I didn't catch many on the ice either.  I hope we are not witnessing a down trend in the black crappie population, I much prefer cleaning them to the whites. 

May is prime time, but really with as quickly as the water is warming, right now should be awesome too!

I don't like to keep crappies after the middle of May, the "mushy" really comes out in them.

Ya your right about the crappies i cleaned many over the yrs, and the black ones are more rigid and it seem like the white ones are softer.  Black ones are easyer especially if u semi chill them get them good and cold and stiff  makes the job less of a hassle.

I usually throw a bag of ice in with mine on the way home.  That helps a lot.  I am usually done with crappie by the end of may though.

Musky, the best way to keep those warm weather crappie firm is to put them in the cooler when you catch them. Dont throw them in the livewell. Thats warm water and they get mushy really fast in it. Break open the bags of ice too. Leave them on ice overnite too and they'll be ready to go in the morning. Be sure to use the drain plug on the cooler.
