I guess they should.   We will have to wait and see...  I am really enjoying tying dry flies, emergers, pupae and soft hackles.  It will be fun to see if any of them will catch a fish...

Mixed blessings - grandkids coming in to town - it's the weekend of the Oil Creek Outing (no brainer) Don't look good for the fishing this year. So, that being said Eggy count me out. If I can make it (doubt it unless things change) I'll see you there.   Dave

Dave,
Unless they are REALLY young, why not bring the grandkids along?  If you do I'll rig up a couple of extra rods for them.  I'm sure any 6 year old would like to use a Sage 9' 4wt.

Their Mom (my daughter) would not be willing besides they're 1 1/2 and 3 months. Some things you have to do & that's one of em. I only see them about twice a year unfortunately. I'm hoping I can make a late run in the afternoon to the outing - no promises just gonna play it by ear or should I say diaper....If they head back early, it takes about 1 1/2 hrs to get there from my house and I'll be packed and ready if they leave early.  Hate to miss it, the last 2 years were a good time.   Dave

I'm getting excited...What's everyone been tying?  I'll be going to get some supplies, most likely some stuff to tie elk/deer hair caddis, stimulators...What else should I be tying?

Gentlemen,
If I can make it up, and I sure hope so,  I'm going to be trying a funny looking, bright green bodied fly with grey wings that I found in a shop down here in KY.  Looks almost like a green bodied wasp.   My thinking is that it will be a little bit different.  Also, my grandson has tied me up a bunch of "special" patterns.  You know, "special", like in Special Oylmpics!  LOL !  Some of these flies ? ? ?   Bug!; never give a 12 year old with imagination a fly tying kit and tell him to experiment.

indsguiz,

It is just a phase.  He will come around soon and start trying fairly "standard" flies.  I will have a few "special" flies for you to use.

As for flies I have been working on, I have been having quite a lot of fun learning to tie dry flies.  The elk hair caddis seems to be a good choice from what I have heard, so I have some of them.  I even am tying some polywing caddis.  The other flies are polywing BWO in #18 and #20.  It was quite a challenge getting used to the tiny hooks.  I also have some small #16, #18 and #20 pale yellow and light gray winged dries.  I was going for a pale dun or sulfur... There are a few light cahills.  I like the look of the royal wulf, so I have some of those.  On the  nymph and emergers, I have a number of fairly generic caddis nymphs and emergers.  I have a few soft hackles to try.

Basically, I am planning on having a wide variety of flies to try.  Of course, since I am totally clueless as to fishing Oil creek if I actually catch anything it will be most likely by mistake.

Bug,
I'll bring some chemical heating packs for the hand cramps you're going to have from switching flys so much!
If I change patterns more than three times it'll be too much.  And me the guy with 3,000 flies.  Guess I'll never run out.

I've been doing some tan, brown, and green caddis dries and some basic caddis nymphs.  Also, some common attractor dries...wulffs, stimulators, humpys...

Bug, sounds like you have it covered

Jeremy- That sounds like a pretty good idea.  I don't know how many people would watch, but I would gladly sit for a while to learn a few new patterns...

BugDrifter- Speaking of three wts....I want to bring my 7'6" glass 3 wt., I can really throw some line with it, but anything more than a slight breeze ruins my cast.  Well i'll bring the 3 wt. along with the 5 wt....somebody can play around with the 3 if I'm not using it...

Dave, that's not fair, you probably even took it fishing. Looking forward to trying it out.
Won't be getting home from Philly till around midnight on Saturday. Not sure if I'm going to head straight up or catch a few hours sleep first. I can meet you at camp or ? if you like.

Jeremy , would like to check out some new pattern and variations.

Mgolf, Bringing along the 5wt as well. Dave just built me a 3wt RX7. Wanted to use a Dan craft blank but got a great deal on the RX7. Looking forward to meeting you.

Take care and see you guys soon.

I'm not going to make it, house project is just getting started and I'll be doing framing all weekend.  Thanks to my local pain-in-the-a$$ building inspector for dragging out my building permit application for 2 extra weeks.  If not for that the job would already be under roof.

Oh well, maybe next year.

Gentlemen,
If anybody is interested I'll be bringing up some bamboo rods, ranging from: cheap, to "don't even ask if you can cast it" ! All you will have to do is provide reels and line.  Most of the rods will be in the 3-4 wt area, and most of the rods will be unrestored or restored a long time ago and will show it; but I'll be willing to let you all try some of them out.  It would be unique to see a large group of men fishing with rods older than they are and maybe get a picture.  I might have a few reels with me, and maybe some with 75 year old line on them.  Won't that be a thrill?  Chore?  Pain in the A$$?
